Abstract

Two species of slipper lobster, Thenus indicus Leach, 1815, and Scyllarides haanii De Haan, 1841, are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of South of Java, part of the Indian Ocean. A total of two specimens, one specimen of T. indicus from Palabuhanratu Bay and one specimen of S. haanii from Yogyakarta coastal waters, were collected in April and September 2015, respectively. Descriptions and illustrations of the morphological characteristics of the two species and their habitat are presented.

Abstract

The tidal lake ecosystem is formed by the flow of the Belmera River and seawater through a tidal process along a course of 12 km from Belawan (Malacca Strait). This lake has a tidal lake that has the characteristics of fresh water to brackish water and Mollusc communities from freshwater species to brackish water species. This study was performed to develop a mollusc conservation strategy based on the spatial and temporal distribution of Mollusca in the tides. The study was conducted from September 2018-August 2019. Mollusc samples were taken every month at high tide and low tide using a Petersen grab tool. Nine Mollusca species, consisting of three bivalves and six gastropods, were identified. Polymedosa expansa is a mollusc species that is considered for conservation. The population size of P. expansa is small, and its distribution is limited to the northern lake. P. expansa was found only in September at high tide and in December at low tide. Competition among Mollusca and habitat availability are obstacles to the survival of P. expansa. The habitat of P. expansa is mangrove, and therefore a conservation approach was carried out through improvement of mangrove quality.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the sand crab Albunea symmysta distribution includes Java, Sumatra, and Moluccas. Populations are assumed to be differentiated between western and eastern Indonesia due to the Wallace line; however, no information on the genetic diversity and differentiation of A. symmysta in Indonesia is available. This study was conducted to clarify the genetic diversity and differentiation of A. symmysta in Indonesia. During the sampling campaign, A. symmysta specimens were found only in Java and Papua. Genetic analysis based on the 643-bp fragment of the partial COI gene from 32 individuals revealed significant genetic differentiation between the Java and Papua populations (FST = 0.94, p < 0.005). The haplotype connectivity of the five A. symmysta sampling sites revealed a two-clade network. Based on analysis of molecular variance, most of the variation was found among populations (94.21%) rather than within populations (5.79%). Tajima's D and Fu's FS values indicated a population expansion. Overall, the findings support a high level of differentiation between the Java and Papua A. symmysta populations, suggesting the separation of population stocks due to low connectivity.
