Abstract

Seagrass ecosystem has important roles in ecological and social factors to support fisherman income. The purpose of this research was to map the social-ecological system connectivity of seagrass with small-scale fisheries with networks perspective, to identify social-ecological connectivity of seagrass with fisheries resource availability approaches in small-scale fisheries, and to estimate the benefits of fish resources relation to seagrass ecosystem in Malang Rapat and Berakit vilages. Social-ecological system connectivity of seagrass was proven by the spatial distribution of fishing areas, networks map markets, and dynamics of small-scale fisheries catches in the study site. Social-ecocoligal connectivity of seagrass was also proven by fish catches dominated by Siganidae, Scaridae, Lethrinidae, and Lutjanidae families. The fishermen income was supported by seagrass ecosystem connectivity which contributed revenue from fish catches totally Rp 202,124,00/day in Malang Rapat village and Rp. 193,151,00/day  in Berakit village. Other benefit of seagrass ecosystem located nearby the beach was that the fishermen can have an easy access or less fuel for fishing operation. Keywords: seagrass ecosystem, network map, connectivity, small-scale fisheries, social-ecological system, Riau islands

Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is one of small scale fisheries commodity that have high economic value and typically associated with good mangrove ecosystem. A habitat degradation will cause a serious impact on the existence of mud crab population. The puropse of this study was to assess the ecological quality of mud crab habitat condition on Bintan Bay’s mangrove ecosystem. Ecological data collection was conducted by using plots line transect for mangrove and the mud carb data collection by using fishermen catch (fisher based survey). The results showed the value of habitat quality index (HQI) of mud crab (Scylla serrata) ranged from 52-82 which mean in the “moderate” category (index value 43-66) and "good" (index value 67-90). It showed that Bintan Bay’s mangrove ecosystems was good enough to support the viability of mud crab. Habitat quality had a linier impact on body weight gain (R2 = 99.78%) and carapace width (R2= 99.21%). This showed that higher the index value of habitat quality, the size of the body weight and carapace width will increases. Keywords: Scylla serrata, habitat quality, ecology, mangroves, and Bintan Bay

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the harmful species of dinoflagellates, to determine the concentration of nutriens in surface waters, and to analyze factors affecting the ecological aspects of the harmful dinoflagellates. The results showed that there were 7 genus of dinoflagellates found in this study i.e., Ceratium spp., Gymnodinium sp., Dinophysis sp., Gonyaulax sp., Noctiluca sp., Protoperi-dinium spp., and Peridinium sp. Protoperidinium spp. and Ceratium spp. were the predominant species, with their abundance ranged  of 9-659 cells/L and 6-556 cells/L, respectively.  In temporal scale, values of DO and water light penetration were not significantly different (α>0.05), while for the parameter of nutriens, salinity, and abundance were significantly different (α<0.05). Total abundance of dinoflagellates was significantly correlated with nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, salinity, and DO.  Harmful dinoflagellate species such as Dinophysis sp. (DSP), Gymnodinium spp. (NSP and PSP), Noctiluca sp. (anaerobic), and Gonyaulax sp. (anaerobic) were observed in the study area. The high concentration of ammonia (>1 mg/L) in the waters of Losari beach also indicated that the area was affected by anthropogenic activities.   Minimizing nutrient inputs from the land was becoming the most priority measure to be done to avoid such effects related to dinoflagellate harmful algae bloms. Keywords: anthropogenic, dinoflagellates, harmful species, Makassar, nutrients.

Abstract

The existence of horseshoe crabs Tachypleus gigas is currently on the threatened condition and its population status is also unclear. The objectives of this research were to asses the horseshoe crabs morphological characters and to identify based on molecular marker of Cytochrome Oxydase Subunit I (COI) gene. The samples were collected from five locations (Segara Menyan Subang, Ujung Kulon Banten, Tambak Lorok Semarang, Betah Walang Demak, and Kenjeran Surabaya) in October 2014 until June 2015. A total of 27 parameters for 62 individuals were used to determine connectivity and character identifier among populations. Data were tested using non-parametric analysis. While, the 5 individuals from each sites were used for molecular analysis including several stages of the DNA extraction, DNA electrophoresis, amplification and visualization of DNA fragments, and DNA sequencing. The results obtained based on morphological characters that T. gigas of Surabaya formed a unique group due to its body size (X1-X2 and X4-X16) was larger than the other 5 body parts (X22, X23, X26-X28) of Semarang, Demak, Subang, and Banten. According to molecular results, there were 650 bp conserve nucleotide sequences. Analysis using software MEGA 5.0 showed that there were 73 existence of specific nucleotide sites that can be used to distinguishes between T. gigas in-groups  and out-groups (T. gigas from Central Arabian Sea, T. tridentatus from Sweden, and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda from USA).Keywords: horseshoe crabs, Java coast, morphology, identification molecular, CO1 gene.

Abstract

Coastal waters of Tangerang Regency has abundant in fish resource including pelagic, demersal, and reef fish. This study was conducted to assess fish biomass variability and of fish community structure in coastal waters of Tangerang Regency which can be used as a basis in determining alternatives for sustainable fish resource management. This research was conducted in June and August 2013 in three locations i.e., Kronjo, Cituis, and Tanjung Pasir. Primary data collected were fish weight per species. Fish biomass from each locations was obtained using swept area method using trawl. The results showed that Kronjo region contained the highest total average biomass of fish. Temporally, total ave-rage biomass of fish in August was higher than in June for Kronjo and Cituis. Meanwhile, the con-trary occurred in Tanjung Pasir. This conditions occurred due to the high current and high wave in August than in June. In general, biomass of planktivorous was dominant during the study indicating overfishing lead to fishing down the food web in the Coastal waters of Tangerang Regency. Keywords: biomass, coastal waters of Tangerang Regency, spatial and temporal variability, swept area, over fishing.

Abstract

Madura strait receives waste disposal from various activites in the mainland, making it vulnerable to contamination of harmful pollutants. Some of the harmful pollutants are heavy metal Pb and Cd. The high concentration Cd and Pb give negative impacts to the biota including bivalves. This study was conducted to assess the distribution of heavy metals Pb and Cd in the waters and their accumulation in bivalves Anadara nodifera, Meretrix lyrata, and Solen lamarckii in coastal waters of the West Madura Strait. Heavy metal analysis refer to APHA 2012 using AAS. The results showed that concentration of Cd and Pb in water were below the quality standards, while in sediment were above the standard (Cd of 7.20 mg/kg and Pb of 62.06 mg/kg). The concentration of Cd in bivalve were different among the species tested A. nodifera of 6.10 mg/kg, M. lyrata of 3.65 mg/kg, and S. lamarckii of 2.74 mg/kg, as well as Pb concentration A. nodifera of 60.10 mg/kg, M. lyrata of 51.48 mg/kg, and S. lamarckii of 45.29 mg/kg). These results indicated that the three shells have exceeded the maximum limit of heavy metal contamination in food (Cd of 1.0 mg/kg and Pb of 1.5 mg/kg). Keywords: bivalve, heavy metal, Madura Strait

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe tri-spine horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus is one of marine benthic animals inhabiting East Balikpapan coastal waters. Information on horseshoe crab population in the location is still limited and IUCN broadly classifies the crab in deficient data category. This study was aimed at elucidating the taxonomic certainty genetically and distribution of T. tridentatus in coastal waters of East Balikpapan. The crabs were collected by local gear of fisherman (dogol – a trawl like fishing-gear and gill net) in the Teritip and Manggar areas, each at a distance of 1 and 2 miles from coastline. Collecting takes place between January to March 2018 at different moon phases, location, number and morphological characters of the crabs was recorded and blood was taken from some individuals. Primary morphological characters in the form of triangular shape of telson and abundant tiny spines on ophisthosoma, genetically ascertained that the collected crab is T. tridentatus. Most of these crabs found was adult and randomly dispersed; with the width of prosoma ranged from 22.5 to 30.5 cm for males and 28.5 to 37.5 cm for females. The highest number of crab was found in the Teritip area and in the third quarter moon phase. This study reinforce the certainty of T. tridentatus in the study site with easily recognized morphological characters and the connectivity with other sites around Eastern Balikpapan waters.
