Abstract

Tedhak Siten is a Javanese traditional ceremony that marks the 8th month of the baby’s age, marked by the baby's readiness to set foot on the ground. This tradition has a philosophical meaning with Javanese cultural values related to the concepts of calculating the ceremony time and the geometric shape of the ceremonial equipment used. The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural activities of the Javanese community by outlining the mathematical concepts contained in the implementation of the Tedhak Siten ceremony. This research was a qualitatively descriptive study through an ethnographic approach. Ethnomathematical data were collected from two experts those were the head of a traditional Javanese culture studio and a cultural actor active as a leader of Javanese traditional ceremonies. The ethnomathematics found in the study were counting the date or time for the implementation of the Tedhak Siten tradition and the elaboration of geometric concepts in the form of ceremonial equipment used to perform traditional customary procedures. This research had an impact as a mathematics learning material that originated from the wisdom of the local Javanese community by applying the concepts of time units, least common multiples, modulo 5, modulo 7, circles, triangles, rectangles, cylindrical volumes and spherical volumes.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of mathematical concepts within the traditional batik motifs of Sidoarjo, Indonesia, through a qualitative ethnographic approach. Focusing on three selected motifs—Beras Wutah, Kembang Tebu, and Udang Bandeng—the research aims to identify and describe inherent mathematical elements such as symmetry, geometry, patterns, and proportional reasoning embedded in the design and production process. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews with local batik artisan Ir. Nurul Huda, and documentation analysis at the Batik Tulis Al-Huda Gallery in Sidokare, Sidoarjo. The data were analyzed using Spradley’s ethnographic method, which includes domain, taxonomic, and componential analysis. Findings reveal that Sidoarjo batik motifs are rich in mathematical structures. The Beras Wutah motif displays tessellation and reflective symmetry; Kembang Tebu illustrates rotational symmetry and repetitive geometric patterns; while the Udang Bandeng motif incorporates proportional scaling and spatial reasoning. These mathematical ideas, though traditionally unformalized, demonstrate deep-rooted local knowledge that aligns with formal mathematical principles. The integration of ethnomathematical perspectives into classroom instruction has the potential to contextualize learning, enhance students’ engagement, and foster cultural appreciation. This study concludes that batik, as a cultural artifact, holds significant educational value in mathematics education. Incorporating local cultural resources like batik into curriculum design not only supports culturally responsive teaching but also bridges abstract mathematical concepts with tangible real-world experiences. The findings advocate for the inclusion of ethnomathematics in primary education as a strategy to make mathematics more accessible, meaningful, and inclusive for diverse learners.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of Wordwall-based educational game media on elementary students’ interest and critical thinking in mathematics learning. The research is motivated by the need for learning approaches that can enhance student engagement and foster higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). Digital platforms such as Wordwall provide opportunities for fun, contextual, and adaptive interactions aligned with the characteristics of mathematical content and students’ cognitive development. This study employs a systematic literature review of ten nationally indexed journal articles published between 2020 and 2024. The inclusion criteria focused on studies involving elementary school students, the use of Wordwall in mathematics learning, and outcomes related to learning interest or critical thinking. Exclusion criteria included articles lacking empirical data or those focusing on non-mathematical subjects. The results indicate that consistent use of Wordwall positively influences students’ learning interest, classroom participation, and critical thinking skills in understanding basic mathematical concepts. Interactive features such as quizzes, matching pairs, and random wheels encourage students to analyze, evaluate, and draw conclusions both independently and collaboratively. Furthermore, Wordwall has shown flexibility in supporting various learning strategies, including project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and differentiated instruction. In conclusion, the integration of Wordwall contributes to enhancing both cognitive and affective aspects of mathematics learning. Future research with experimental or mixed-method approaches is recommended to measure the real impact of Wordwall implementation in classroom contexts. Thus, Wordwall serves not only as a digital tool but as a strategic medium for fostering active and meaningful learning in the 21st century.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Burning Meatball interactive media integrated with a collaborative learning approach in improving elementary students’ mathematical achievement in whole number subtraction. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control groups, the research involved 56 fifth-grade students from two parallel classes in an elementary school. Data on student achievement were collected through tests and analyzed descriptively using percentage scores to determine the improvement in learning outcomes. The results indicate that students taught using the Burning Meatball media combined with collaborative learning achieved a higher percentage increase in learning outcomes compared to the control group. The collaborative learning setting encouraged peer discussion and problem-solving, while the interactive media facilitated better conceptual understanding by visualizing subtraction operations in a fun and engaging way. Analysis of the percentage gain shows that the experimental group experienced a substantial improvement in their performance. These findings suggest that integrating interactive media with cooperative pedagogy can enhance mathematics learning in elementary schools. The study concludes that this approach effectively supports both academic achievement and positive learning attitudes toward mathematics.
