Abstract

This study investigates how cognitive load influences learning outcomes by considering the role of academic boredom, while also examining the effectiveness of worked example-based instruction in reducing both cognitive load and academic boredom in mathematics learning. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving experimental and control groups with a total of 120 participants (n = 120). Data were collected using questionnaires measuring cognitive load and academic boredom, along with tests assessing learning outcomes. The relationships among variables, both direct and indirect, were examined using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results show that an increase in cognitive load tends to be associated with higher levels of academic boredom and a decline in learning outcomes. Academic boredom negatively predicts learning outcomes and acts as a mediating variable between cognitive load and achievement. Worked example-based instruction demonstrates a stronger ability to regulate cognitive and emotional processes compared with traditional instructional approaches. These results underscore the need to maintain an appropriate balance between cognitive demands and students’ emotional engagement in mathematics learning. The study offers a contribution by combining cognitive and affective aspects within a unified analytical perspective and presents practical recommendations for developing instructional strategies that foster cognitive-emotional balance.

Abstract

This study examines prospective mathematics teachers’ perceptions of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in mathematics education, focusing on their understanding of PBL characteristics, the role of problems as learning triggers, and their readiness to implement PBL in future teaching practice. The study addresses the gap between positive perceptions of PBL and pedagogical readiness for inquiry-based mathematics instruction. A mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires administered to 35 prospective mathematics teachers, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews to deepen the interpretation of the quantitative findings. The results indicate that prospective teachers generally hold highly positive perceptions toward PBL, particularly regarding its ability to support critical thinking, collaboration, conceptual understanding, and contextual mathematics learning. Qualitative findings revealed that participants viewed problems in PBL as starting points for conceptual exploration rather than exercises given after instruction. However, participants also identified challenges related to authentic problem design, classroom management, inquiry facilitation, and time allocation. The study highlights the importance of strengthening experiential PBL training, problem design, and facilitation skills in mathematics teacher education programs. Although the limited sample size restricts generalizability, the study contributes to understanding the relationship between perceptions and pedagogical readiness in PBL implementation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is essential for students, especially in 21st-century learning, where many students use technology to explore answers without fully understanding the questions and the solutions. This study focuses on students’ understanding of set operations in mathematics and identifies the difficulties they face. The participants were 27 ninth-grade students at Al-Manar Junior High School. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design to analyze students’ abilities to solve problems, decide and implement solution steps, perform operations, and apply mathematical induction related to set operations. The findings are expected to reveal students’ critical thinking skills and their understanding of basic mathematical concepts, particularly in set operations, as well as to identify factors influencing their understanding, thereby improving the quality of mathematics instruction at the primary and secondary education levels. The instrument used to collect data was a test administered to students on the topic of set operations. Data analysis followed these steps: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that students’ ability to solve mathematical problems on set operations is uneven. Based on the critical thinking categories used in this study, no students reached the “very good” category; 80% were in the “good” category, 5% in the “fair” category, and 15% in the “low” category. This distribution was evident in students’ responses, suggesting that their overall problem-solving ability can still be considered good. Therefore, the researcher recommends that teachers pay greater attention to and further develop students’ critical thinking skills and their understanding of basic mathematical concepts.

Abstract

Information in the digital space. Using a quantitative descriptive survey design, 30 active undergraduate students from various Indonesian universities were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via a 30-item questionnaire based on five digital literacy dimensions: information access, information management and processing, digital communication and collaboration, digital security and privacy, and critical thinking and digital ethics, measured on a five-point Likert scale. Validity testing using corrected item-total correlation showed all items exceeded the 0.30 threshold, while reliability testing yielded a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.968, indicating excellent internal consistency. Descriptive statistics (mean scores and percentages) revealed that students' digital literacy generally falls into the high to very high category. The highest grand means were found in digital communication and collaboration (4.26) and digital security and privacy (4.26), both very high, followed by critical thinking and digital ethics (4.23). Information access (4.18) and information management and processing (4.15) fell into the high category. These findings indicate that while students are proficient in digital communication, collaboration, and security, further strengthening is needed in evaluating information credibility, using academic reference tools, and understanding copyright and data ethics.
