Abstract

Gender inequality and limited health literacy can restrict women’s educational opportunities, autonomy, and timely use of preventive health services. This community-service program aimed to strengthen awareness of gender equality and women’s health, particularly breast-cancer prevention and breast self-examination, among adolescent girls and adult women in Sidosermo, Wonocolo District, Surabaya, Indonesia. A community education and empowerment approach was implemented on 14 December 2024 through four linked activities: a Brain-Beauty-Behavior self-development session for junior- and senior-high-school girls, educational-support assistance to an Islamic boarding school, health education and breast self-examination training for Family Welfare Empowerment members, and free health screening. The adolescent education component used pretest-posttest assessment, while the adult health and screening components were documented descriptively. The adolescent session was reported to produce a 72% increase in knowledge. Forty PKK members participated in the women’s health education and breast self-examination training. Twenty-five individuals attended health screening; the retained records classified 19 as normal, 2 with elevated uric acid, 2 with elevated cholesterol, and 1 with both elevated uric acid and cholesterol, although these categories sum to 24 and therefore require verification against the original clinical records. The program demonstrated feasible community engagement, immediate knowledge gain, and delivery of preventive-health services. However, incomplete participant-level pretest-posttest data, absence of a standardized breast self-examination competency measure, lack of long-term follow-up, and the unresolved screening denominator limit conclusions about sustained behavioral or health effects. Continued cadre-based mentoring, standardized outcome measurement, and documented referral follow-up are recommended for future community-based women’s empowerment and preventive-health programs in communities
