Abstract

Organic hydroponic cultivation systems require substitute nutrients other than inorganic fertilizers as a source of plant nutrients. Catfish cultivation waste is one of the potentials that can be used as hydroponic nutrients. This study aimed to find out the concentration of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) from fish cultivation waste as a substitute for commercial inorganic nutrients on the growth of pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.). This research was carried out in 2 stages, namely the manufacture of LOF from catfish culture waste and experiments using LOF as hydroponic nutrients. The results of this study showed that the increase in LOF nutrient content in anaerobic fermentation was higher than in aerobic fermentation. The use of LOF as a hydroponic nutrient, based on the parameters of plant height, number of leaves, SPAD value, root weight, crown weight, and dry weight obtained a smaller value that was significantly different compared to the inorganic nutrient treatment of AB mix. LOF concentration of 20%, both fermented aerobically and anaerobically, gave better growth when compared to higher concentration treatments. The nutrient content in LOF is difficult to adjust to the needs of hydroponic pakcoy, so that it will have a toxic impact on macro nutrients on the other hand, it also provides a response to micro nutrient deficiency.

Abstract

The use of household waste in the form of rice washing water, pineapple skin waste, and leftover rice as liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) has the potential to create a good growing medium so as to increase plant growth. Brazilian Spinach (Alternanthera sissoo) is a leafy vegetable that has the potential to diversify vegetable consumption in urban areas where it is expected to grow well in tight spaces, particularly under shading. This study aimed to find out the effects of applying liquid organic fertilizer made of household waste and the shading on the growth of the Brazilian spinach plant. The study used a split plot design with a main plot consisted of 0%, 50% and 70% shading, while subplot consisted of LOF washing water (20 ml/l), pineapple peel waste (30 ml/l) and leftover rice (50ml/l). Each treatment was repeated 3 (three) times. The results of the study showed that the SPAD value of Brazilian spinach under shading treatment and LOF treatment of rice washing water linearly continued to increase until 8 (eight) weeks after planting. Regarding the vegetative growth of Brazilian spinach, the 0% shading treatment was the best treatment in terms of increasing the non-edible leaf fresh weight and root dry weight. Meanwhile, the LOF had an insignificant effect on all treatments. In conclusion, Brazilian spinach can grow more optimally in no-shade conditions.

Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is one of the vegetables that is widely loved because of its taste and nutritional content. The increase in lettuce production can be increased by the use of swamp land with floating cultivation during the flood season. The size of the pots used in floating system cultivation will affect the growth and number of plants that will be produced. The study aimed to determine the optimal of planting media volume on the growth and yield of lettuce in floating cultivation system. The research used a randomized block design with 4 treatments of planting media volume, namely 1.9 L (P1), 2.7 L (P2), 3.6 L(P3), and 5 L (P4). Each treatment was repeated 4 times and each replication consisted of 5 plants. The results showed that at the beginning of the growth of the media volume of 2.7 L would be faster, but at the time of harvest almost all parameters showed that plants with a media volume of 5 L produced a larger plant weight than the plant unit. Although the use of smaller volumes of media results in a smaller plant weight, the raft is able to accommodate a larger number of pots. So that the use of a media volume of 1.9 L will be better used for floating lettuce production.
