Abstract

Bengkulu Province has great marine potential and a long coastline, but the welfare of fishermen is still an issue that needs attention. This study aims to analyze the level of welfare and the factors that influence the welfare of fisher households in Bengkulu Province. The research location is in Bengkulu Province. In this study, the sample consisted of 200 purposively selected fisher households. Data were collected through secondary sources from the March 2023 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) and related agencies. For data analysis, quantitative descriptive method and binary logistic regression were used to see the factors affecting the welfare of fisher households. The results show that the highest level of welfare is in Mukomuko District with a percentage of 93.75%. Factors that are proven to have a probability effect on the welfare of fisher households include the number of family dependents and the status of Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT) recipients. In contrast, variables such as age, years of education, boat ownership, as well as participation in assistance programs such as Kartu Keluarga Sejahtera (KKS) and Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH), are unlikely to have a significant effect on the welfare of fisher households in Bengkulu Province. These findings indicate that the government's role in raising awareness of the importance of limiting the number of family members can be done through socialization on family planning. The government needs to focus support through the BPNT assistance program on fisher households with more than four family members to improve their welfare.

Abstract

Oil palm is one of the commodities that plays a vital role in the Indonesian economy, especially in Bengkulu Province. Mukomuko District, Rawa Bangun Village, has oil palm plantations on peatland and dryland. This study aims to analyze production, productivity, and factors affecting smallholder oil palm production on peatland and dryland. Respondents totalled 84 oil palm farmers, determined by the Slovin method and Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling to divide peatland and dryland respondents. Production factors were analyzed using the Cobb-Douglas model. The results showed that the average production was 65,038 kg per year, and the average productivity was 21,967 kg per hectare per year in dryland, higher than in peatland. Factors of oil palm production show that land area, number of plants, and fertilizer significantly positively affect oil palm production in both types of land. Meanwhile, labour, pesticides, and plant age have no significant effect and tend to hurt oil palm production in both types of land.

Abstract

Most of rubber plants in Indonesia are cultivated in highly-weathered soils; therefore, their annual productions are relatively low with the low quality of latex. The aim of this reseach was to increase the latex quality from a rubber plantation grown on low fertility soils by applying a locally-produced organic fertilizer (LOF) to the soils. This research consisted of two steps, i.e. LOF production and a field fertilization experiment. The LOF was made mainly from waste of a latex processing industry. The field fertilization experiment was conducted to assess the effects of LOF additions to the soils on the latex quality. The field experiment was performed using a randomized complete block design with 6 LOF levels, 4 levels of land slopes, and 5 rubber trees in each block, resulting in 120 rubber trees. The LOF levels were 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 kg tree-1. The LOF contained 17.35% organic-C, 1.14% total-N, 0.53 ppm available-P, and 1.21 cmol (+)kg-1 exchangeable-K, with slightly alkaline pH (pH 8.0). The soil has low fertility status as indicated by the low amounts of total-N and exchangeable base cations (K, Na, and Mg), and very acid pH (pH 4.5). Indicators of latex quality comprising of blockage index, ash-, impurity- and dry rubber-content, and N, P, K contents in the rubber leaves were measured. Although there were no significant differences in most observed latex properties due to LOF addition, their values tended to be higher when the rubber trees were fertilized with LOF. Apparently N and K contents in the rubber leaves are better correlated to the latex properties compared to the P content.
