Abstract

This investigation was conducted with the principal objective of examining the influence exerted by the utilization of folktales on enhancing the reading comprehension abilities of tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Palu. Employing a quasi-experimental methodology, the study encompassed two distinct cohorts: the experimental group, which engaged with narrative texts rooted in folktales, and the control group, which received instruction through conventional reading passages. The evaluative instruments comprised both pre-assessments and post-assessments, which incorporated multiple-choice items and essay prompts aimed at gauging comprehension at the literal level. Findings indicated that learners exposed to the folktale-based instructional approach exhibited a marked elevation in comprehension performance following the intervention. Specifically, the average achievement score within the experimental group rose from an initial mean of 28.21 to a post-treatment mean of 49.95. In contrast, the control group's mean score exhibited a modest increase, shifting from 28.45 to 30.05. Statistical validation using the Mann-Whitney U test produced a significance value of 0.007, thereby substantiating a statistically meaningful divergence between the two groups. This result necessitates the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis while concurrently rejecting the null. Consequently, it can be inferred that the incorporation of folktales into the reading curriculum substantively augments students’ literal reading comprehension capabilities in the context of tenth-grade learners at MAN 1 Palu.

Abstract

This study, entitled The Use of Role Play Model to Develop Vocabulary Mastery of Grade Ten Students at SMA Negeri 2 Palu, aims to examine the effectiveness of the role play model in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery. The research was motivated by the observation that many tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Palu struggle with limited vocabulary, which is often caused by low motivation, monotonous teaching methods, and a lack of confidence in using English. The study employed a pre-experimental design involving one group of 32 students. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test instruments administered before and after the implementation of role play activities based on real-life scenarios. The results showed a significant increase in vocabulary scores, with the mean rising from 12.06 (pre-test) to 18.75 (post-test). Statistical analysis using SPSS revealed that the data met normality and homogeneity assumptions, and the Independent Sample t-Test indicated a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), confirming the positive effect of the role play model. These findings support the conclusion that role play is an effective, interactive, and engaging strategy to develop students' vocabulary mastery.

The population of this study is all grade VIII students totaling 41 students. The data collection technique used tests in the form of pretests and posttests. Based on the results of the study, the experimental class's students' reading skills significantly improved once the TBLT approach was implemented. This is shown by the calculation using SPSS, the Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.000 < 0.05. The experimental class obtained a higher post-test average score of 20.06 points compared to the control class. This mean, H₁: The implementation of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) significantly improves the reading skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 9 Sigi is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a difference in the average learning outcomes between the experimental class using the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) model and the control class using the conventional model.
