Abstract

The low awareness of students towards civic values, such as nationalism, love of the country, and social concern, is a worrying phenomenon in today's education world, especially at the secondary education level. The lack of student involvement in national-themed activities and the lack of understanding of national songs indicate the need for learning strategies that can instill these values effectively. This study aims to improve the dimensions of the civic graduate profile through the use of national songs in arts and culture learning. The method used is the Classroom Action Research (CAR) model of Kemmis & McTaggart, which is carried out in two cycles with stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were grade XI students at a high school. Data collection techniques include observation, Likert scale questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that there was a significant increase in the civic aspect of students after the implementation of national songbased learning. The average score of the civic questionnaire increased from 3.12 in the preaction to 4.21 in the post-action. In addition, observations show an increase in students' active involvement in learning, as well as the growth of reflective awareness of the meaning of national songs. This study proves that national songs are not only an expression of art, but also an effective educational medium in instilling national character values. The benefits of this study are to provide an alternative learning approach that is contextual, meaningful, and able to support the strengthening of the Pancasila Student Profile, especially in the citizenship dimension.

Abstract

This study investigates the semantic construction of figurative language in Teenage Dream, the second studio album by American pop singer Katy Perry. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the study draws on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Semantic Field Theory (SFT) to systematically analyze all twelve original songs on the album. The analysis uncovers the strategic use of figurative language especially metaphor, simile, and personification, as a means of encoding complex emotional, psychological, and social meanings. The findings suggest the presence of dominant semantic fields, including love, nostalgia, empowerment, desire, and identity, mapped through embodied imagery such as fire, light, heartbeat, and transformation. These tropes serve not only as poetic embellishments but also as core semantic strategies that construct narrative voice and emotional depth. Furthermore, the study illustrates how figurative language enhances lyrical identity and cultural resonance, particularly in the context of women’s artistic expression in popular music. By highlighting the latent depths in commercially produced lyrics, this study contributes to the broader discourse on the intersection of linguistics, gender, and pop culture. Filling this gap allows for a fuller account of female pop stardom and highlights how Teenage Dream complicates and extends dominant narratives of gender, sexuality, and cultural production in contemporary music studies.

Abstract

This study investigates the pragmatic analysis of expressive utterances in celebrities’ apology posts on Instagram. It examines the types and functions of direct and indirect expressive speech acts and those in apologies. It applied qualitative descriptive research with data from celebrity Instagram posts that grew significant community attention within five years (2021-2025). The data analysis involved categorizing each apology utterance as either direct or indirect and subsequently identifying its pragmatic function within the specific context of the celebrity's post. The findings show that celebrities tend to use a combination of direct and indirect apology expressions. Direct apologies, such as “I apologize” and “I’m sorry,” indicate clear responsibility, while indirect expressions, such as “I feel greatly ashamed of myself” and “I deeply regret my behavior,” create sympathy and reduce negative impact. These findings hint at the nature of online communication on social media sites and the importance of apologetic strategies for keeping these relationships harmonious with the general public and enhancing a positive image for celebrities.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition remains a persistent challenge for EFL learners across different educational systems, making effective learning strategies essential for academic success. This study examines Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by undergraduate English students in Indonesia and Pakistan focusing on differences influenced by educational and cultural contexts. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data was collected through a closed-ended questionnaire from 114 students across seven universities. The questionnaire, adapted from Goundar (2019) and based on Gu and Johnson's (1996) framework, categorized VLS into meta cognitive, cognitive, memory, and activation strategies. Data analysis using SPSS included descriptive statistics, normality tests, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Kruskal-Wallis analysis. The results revealed significant differences in VLS preferences, with cognitive strategies being the most dominant in both groups. However, Pakistani students demonstrated higher meta cognitive strategy use than their Indonesian counterparts. These findings highlight the impact of educational systems on VLS selection. The study suggests incorporating meta cognitive and activation strategies into language learning curricula to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition.
