Abstract

Abstract

The family is the primary space for cultivating values of justice and gender equality. However, in Negeri Hukurila, Ambon City, family education patterns remain gender-biased. Male and female roles are often rigidly distinguished, limiting women’s voices in household decision-making and confining girls to domestik spheres while boys are encouraged toward public roles. Such conditions risk perpetuating gender inequality and hindering children’s equal development. This community service program aimed to raise public awareness of inclusive and gender-responsive family education through participatory approaches grounded in local wisdom. Methods included socialization, training, technology application, and evaluation that involving traditional leaders, saniri negeri, religious figures, youth, and women. The results demonstrate increased community understanding of gender-responsive family concepts, greater equality in family dialogue, and the revitalization of local practices such as masohi (mutual cooperation) as a symbol of just family collaboration. The novelty of this program lies in integrating local wisdom to build family education patterns that respect gender equality, positioning indigenous communities as key agents of change. The study concludes that gender-responsive family education is well accepted when delivered through culturally relevant approaches. Future recommendations include expanding cross-sector collaboration, strengthening local cadres as change agents, and encouraging community-level policies to sustain inclusive family practices

Abstract

The spread of fake news through online social networks poses global challenges, yet its dynamics in local media ecosystems — especially in peripheral regions like Ambon, Indonesia — remain understudied. This study explores the characteristics of fake news circulation in Ambon’s digital environment, its societal impacts, and the limitations of current AI-based detection approaches. Using a mixed-method design, the research analyzes fake news content on local social media platforms, conducts stakeholder interviews, and assesses the applicability of existing detection technologies in a local context. Findings reveal that fake news in Ambon often exploits cultural, religious, and political sensitivities, leading to social fragmentation and declining trust in legitimate media. Moreover, mainstream detection systems are ineffective locally due to linguistic, contextual, and infrastructural barriers. The study highlights the need for context-sensitive, community-driven detection frameworks and contributes new perspectives on misinformation governance in localized digital ecosystems

Abstract

This study examines the challenges and strategic opportunities in safeguarding Maluku’s local languages as essential cultural heritage and intergenerational knowledge systems. Despite their role as mother tongues and carriers of oral traditions, these languages face rapid decline due to shrinking numbers of active speakers, disrupted transmission processes, limited educational integration, and fragmented policy implementation. Adopting a qualitative approach that combines policy analysis and linguistic ethnography, the research focuses on selected Maluku communities representing varying levels of language vitality. Data were gathered through policy and curriculum document analysis, in-depth interviews with policymakers, educators, elders, and youth, and participant observation of language practices across formal and informal domains. The findings highlight a misalignment between national and regional language policies, inadequate educational implementation, and weak community involvement, collectively accelerating language shift toward Indonesian and foreign languages. Nevertheless, grassroots initiatives , such as school-based programs, community literacy activities, and adat-driven revitalization , offer promising foundations for preservation. The study proposes an integrated model involving policy reform, pedagogical innovation, and community-based strategies to strengthen language vitality. Its novelty lies in the multidimensional framework combining top-down and bottom-up approaches in Maluku, a linguistically rich but understudied region. The study contributes to sociolinguistics, language policy, education, and cultural sustainability scholarship.

Abstract

This study investigates how local linguistic features and perceptions of standardness influence academic writing among university students in eastern Indonesia. Although Indonesian functions as the national academic language regulated by KBBI and PUEBI, the local Malay variety—Bahasa Melayu Ambon—retains strong social and cognitive functions in higher education. The research examines the linguistic characteristics of this variety in students’ academic texts, explores students’ perceptions of their language use, and analyzes the sociolinguistic implications of the gap between national norms and local practices. Using a qualitative descriptive approach within a sociolinguistic and language ideology framework, data were drawn from 15 academic texts and 10 interviews with Sociology students at a state university in Ambon. Analysis identified systematic lexical, morphological, syntactic, and orthographic features (e.g., beta, katong, dong, su, mo, seng ada) and applied Woolard and Schieffelin’s framework to interpret language beliefs. Findings reveal that students internalize local forms as standard Indonesian, reflecting a “local standard ideology” reinforced by limited academic writing instruction and dominant local norms. The study contributes theoretically by expanding sociolinguistic inquiry to written academic texts, methodologically by combining textual and perceptual data, and practically by informing localized academic literacy programs in multilingual settings.

Abstract

This study aims to develop strategic guidelines to enhance the efficiency of tourism potential utilization in the formation of a tourism ecosystem at Kairatu Beach, West Seram Regency, Maluku Province. The concept of a regional tourism ecosystem is examined by emphasizing the involvement of various actors, including government authorities and the business sector, in the management and development of tourist destinations. This research employs an ecosystem-based tourism attractiveness assessment approach, integrating key performance indicator evaluations to assess a region's tourism potential. The algorithm developed in this study enables data-driven assessment to understand the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism ecosystem. The analysis results indicate that the regional tourism industry and its value chain can be interpreted as an ecosystem consisting of interrelated elements. Several development strategies are identified, including institutional strategies, business image, cultural and educational initiatives, as well as innovation and technology, all of which play a role in directing the development of Kairatu Beach’s tourism potential. These findings offer a novel perspective on understanding cross-sectoral tourism ecosystems at the regional level and provide recommendations for the development of social and political sciences, particularly in formulating ecosystem-based tourism policies. The practical implications of this study serve as a foundation for stakeholders in designing more effective, sustainable, and cross-sectorally synergized tourism management and development strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of political communication in the appointment and election system of traditional leadership (Raja) in the indigenous community of Negeri Hitumessing, Maluku, as a form of power negotiation within adat structures. The research is grounded in the significance of understanding political communication processes within a sociocultural space that retains strong traditional values while being influenced by modernity. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving community leaders, adat authorities, religious figures, youth representatives, and village officials. Political communication theory and Harold Lasswell’s model serve as the conceptual framework to analyze message transmission, actors involved, communication channels, and the resulting socio-political impacts. Findings reveal that the Raja election functions not only as a contest for authority but also as a symbolic arena for competing group interests. Communication channels are hybrid in nature—oral interactions through informal community networks coexist with digital expressions via social media, particularly Facebook, which facilitates public critique and opinion formation. The election process significantly affects social values, religious practices, and public perceptions of legitimacy. This study contributes a novel mapping of political communication’s role within adat institutions, offering insights for integrating political communication approaches in local leadership studies and strengthening community-based democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of the role play method as a communicative educational tool to enhance early childhood learning in remote areas, focusing on TK Ilwiaru Watumera Wakarleli, Maluku Barat Daya. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilized observation, interviews, and documentation to assess the process and impact of role play-based learning on children’s interpersonal communication development. Findings indicate that the role play method significantly improves key aspects such as openness, empathy, supportive behavior, positive attitudes, and equality among children. Initially passive children became more active in both verbal and non-verbal communication, demonstrated increased social awareness, and were able to express themselves more confidently, including in family settings. The novelty of this study lies in its application of role play in early childhood education within remote communities, which typically lack access to modern pedagogical approaches. The study recommends the integration of role play-based teacher training to foster character development, strengthen interpersonal communication, and create an engaging and participatory learning environment. These findings contribute to the advancement of social sciences and humanities in the field of early childhood education.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of role play learning methods to the development of interpersonal communication competence among early childhood learners in peripheral regions of Indonesia, focusing on TK Ilwiaru Watumera Wakarleli in Southwest Maluku. Framed within participatory pedagogy, symbolic interactionism, and social reproduction theory, the study positions role play not merely as a learning activity but as a form of social practice that shapes children’s communicative habitus within their local cultural context. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of classroom activities. Findings reveal that role play significantly facilitates early socialization, strengthens children's capacity as reflective social actors, and fosters interactional dynamics reflecting the norms, values, and social structures of the local community. This research contributes novel insight by highlighting the transformative potential of symbolic play in early childhood education in Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) areas—not only as a medium for reproducing existing structures but also for initiating social change. The study advocates for context-based, culturally grounded early childhood curricula that support inclusive communication skills and align with broader efforts toward the decolonization of education in the social and political sciences.

Abstract

This article explores the revitalization of reading culture in Southeast Maluku by highlighting the central role of women and the use of local traditions as learning instruments. The study aims to understand how literacy practices can be revived through culturally rooted, community-based approaches, and to identify the social transformations resulting from such interventions. Employing a qualitative case study method in Tual City, the research involved participatory observation, in-depth interviews with women leaders and cultural practitioners, and narrative analysis of traditional forms used in literacy activities. Findings reveal four key insights: (1) local traditions such as songs, dances, and folktales are creatively adapted as engaging and contextual tools for literacy learning; (2) women’s participation in literacy initiatives has transformed their social roles, enhancing their community status and fostering literacy-based creative economies; (3) youth increasingly view reading as a communal cultural activity rather than a school-based obligation; and (4) a gender-sensitive, culturally grounded literacy model emerged, offering replication potential in similar coastal or island communities. This study’s novelty lies in its integration of local cultural frameworks and gender perspectives in community literacy development, an area often overlooked in formal literacy discourse. It recommends adapting such models to strengthen socially grounded, inclusive approaches in the social sciences and humanities.
