Abstract

This study describes the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among Arabic language students at several Islamic State Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in North Sumatra. Although the use of AI as a tool to assist in translating Arabic texts offers significant benefits for students, its negative impacts cannot be entirely avoided. The study aims to examine in depth how Arabic language students at these PTKIN utilize AI applications in the Arabic translation process, the reasons behind their choice of applications, as well as the positive and negative impacts on their motivation and learning outcomes. This research employs a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The research population consists of 331 Arabic language students distributed across four study programs at three PTKIN in North Sumatra. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 24 students as the research sample from these programs. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The findings indicate that the majority of Arabic language students are now actively using translation applications to support their coursework and thesis writing. The most frequently used translation applications include Google Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT. The use of AI greatly assists students in simplifying the translation of their assignments and improving their learning outcomes. However, on the negative side, the translation skills of many students have not improved, as reliance on AI has led to laziness, dependency, and a lack of critical thinking.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly being integrated into language learning; however, empirical evidence regarding their use in Arabic grammar and translation (Nahwu wa Tarjamah/I‘rab) learning remains limited, particularly in Islamic higher education contexts. Existing studies have predominantly focused on general language learning applications, leaving insufficient understanding of how AI-supported platforms facilitate the learning of complex grammatical analysis and translation skills. This study aims to identify the AI-based platforms employed in I‘rab learning and examine their impact on students’ learning experiences and outcomes. A quasi-qualitative design was employed involving 30 fifth-semester students enrolled in the Nahwu course at STAIN Mandailing Natal. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that students utilized four categories of AI-supported resources: digital learning repositories, generative AI applications, machine translation tools, and Arabic grammar support websites. The integration of these technologies enhanced students’ awareness of digital learning resources, promoted autonomous learning practices, increased learning motivation, and received positive instructional support from lecturers. Furthermore, students demonstrated strong academic performance, achieving a mean final course score of 88.2 (A). This study contributes to the growing literature on AI-assisted Arabic language learning by providing empirical evidence of AI’s role as a digital scaffolding tool in facilitating the acquisition of advanced Arabic grammatical and translation competencies.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the development of students' character at SD Swasta 118 Muhammadiyah Gunung Tua through Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning based on Islamic values. Islamic Religious Education plays a strategic role in instilling religious values from an early age, especially at the elementary school level. Through worship habituation strategies, teacher role modeling, contextual learning, and the integration of Islamic values into school culture, students' character can be comprehensively developed encompassing spiritual, moral, and social aspects. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with research subjects including the principal, PAI teachers, and students. The results show that the implementation of Islamic values-based PAI learning has a positive impact on the formation of students' religious character, reflected in worship discipline, respectful attitudes, prayer habits, social care, and honest and responsible behavior. Supporting factors include a religious school environment, teacher-parent collaboration, and availability of religious facilities. Inhibiting factors are differences in family backgrounds and limited learning time.

Abstract

Abstract

There are some errors in the pronunciation of Arabic sounds among university students. These errors are not limited to graduates of general or vocational high schools but also include some graduates of Islamic schools. This study aims to analyze the challenges faced by Indonesian learners in learning Arabic phonetics and identify solutions to address these challenges. The method used in this research is descriptive-analytical, involving the review of sources and references from books and scientific articles. The result indicate that the challenges in learning Arabic phonetics include phonetic-related issues, challenges from the learners’ side, and challenges from the teachers’ side. Proposed solutions to these challenges include intensive practice  and focus on specific sounds, providing motivation to learners, utilizing digital tools and artificial intelligence for pronunciation training, designing phonetic learning materials based on contrastive studies, and ensuring that teachers understand the characteristics and features of Arabic sounds, and phonetic teaching be prioritized before vocabulary and grammar teaching.
