Abstract

Lhok Bubon Beach is a unique coastal area because it has complete biota, namely mangrove forests and macrozoobenthos. This research looks at the composition of mangroves and macrozoobenthos on Lhok Buon Beach. The method used in this research is a survey with three sampling stations. Determination of stations uses purposive sampling with different characteristics and 3 station plots measuring 10x10m. The research results show that the highest macro zoobenthos composition was obtained at station 3 and the lowest at station 1. The diversity index was classified as low, uniformity was medium and high at station 3, and no mangroves dominated at any station. Environmental quality is still relatively good for mangroves and macrozoobenthos

Abstract

Marine debris has become an increasing environmental threat in the world. West Aceh's coast is designated for tourism and fishing activities. This study determines the composition, characteristics, and abundance of waste on two selected beaches with economic activities for fishing (daily activities of coastal communities) and tourism activities. Garbage collection was carried out on two beaches on the coast of Johan Pahlawan District, West Aceh Regency, namely Pasar Baro Beach and Ujung Karang Beach. Pasar Baro Beach and Ujung Karang Beach were chosen because they are near fish market activities and recreational beaches, respectively. Determination of the sampling area by distance, from the low tide line to the first vegetation or concrete on the beach. The sampling length was measured using a 100 m roll meter parallel to the coastline. The results showed that the total weight (%) and frequency of waste per category were highest in the household category at Pasar Baro Beach. While at Ujung Karang Beach, the highest frequency of garbage is found in the variety of plastic drink bottles. The difference in abundance at the two stations is due to differences in visits and activities of the surrounding community. In addition, due to the lack of local cleaning efforts and facilities that could be more optimal, piles of garbage are still found along the coast

Abstract

Estuary waters have unique characteristics where fresh water and seawater transition. These characteristics affect the environment's quality and aquatic biota's life. In addition, human activities such as fishing and industry can also affect water quality and impact biota's life. This study aims to analyze water quality parameters in Muara Lhok Bubon, West Aceh Regency waters. This study was conducted in September 2024 and used a survey method. The results showed an average water temperature of 29.9 ° C, an average pH of 7.6, and an average current speed of 0.24 m/s. These parameters indicate that the water quality in Muara Lhok Bubon is still in the good category, supporting the survival of aquatic biota.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the effects of different salinities on histopathological Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. The method used is experimental by applying a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments: salinity 0 ppt, salinity 5 ppt, salinity 7 ppt, and salinity 9 ppt. The fish specimen is 8-10 cm in length and weighs 5 g. It was raised in a 54 L tank containing 40 L of water at a density of 2 fish 1 L-1 and kept for 45 days. Feed with commercial pellet 3 times a day in satiation. The results showed histopathological changes in gills and kidneys occurred at a salinity of 9 ppt. Chloride cell hypertrophy and secondary lamella bend in the gill organs, while the kidneys have acute tubular necrosis. Meanwhile, a salinity of 7 ppt resulted in abnormalities in the kidney organs with hemorrhage. It can be concluded that a salinity of 5 ppt indicates a safe salinity condition for the maintenance of striped catfish.

Abstract

Due to its unique coastal characteristics, the Aroen Meubanja Turtle Conservation Area in Aceh Jaya has significant potential as a nesting site for sea turtles. This study analysed the area's sand grain size and characteristics to determine its suitability for turtle nesting. The research was conducted in March 2024, with sand samples collected from three stations using purposive random sampling. Laboratory analysis included sieving and sand grain classification based on size and shape using the Wentworth and Powers classifications. The Wentworth scale is used to classify grain size, while the Powers scale assesses the shape and roundness of the grains. The results revealed that over 70% of the sediment in the area consists of very fine sand, which is highly favourable for turtle nesting. The roundness of the sand grains indicates a long transportation process, contributing to their suitability for nesting. Fine sand allows for proper water drainage, preventing waterlogging in nests and maintaining optimal temperatures for egg incubation. Additionally, environmental factors such as beach width, slope, substrate temperature, humidity, and coastal vegetation further enhance the area's potential as a turtle conservation site. This study concludes that the Aroen Meubanja coastal area meets the criteria for an ideal turtle nesting habitat. Recommendations include habitat management, community education, and further research to ensure sustainable conservation efforts

Abstract

Sonneratia alba (Pedada) is one of the potential mangroves as a natural antibacterial because it contains secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids. This study aimed to determine the inhibitory power of Pedada leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aeromonas hydrophila. The research method used is experimental, including sample preparation, extraction, and sensitivity tests using the Kirby-Bauer disc method. This study used 100%, 50%, 25%, and 12.5% extract doses, positive control (Oxytetracycline), and negative control (a quade). The results showed that Pedada leaf extract could inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria; 100% concentration was the concentration with the widest inhibition zone diameter of S. aureus 15.48 mm, E. coli 13.37 mm, and A. hydrophila 13.88 mm. Based on this study's results, the best extract concentration for inhibiting bacterial growth is 100% concentration
