Abstract

Background: Stress and anxiety have become significant mental health challenges in the modern era. In addition to pharmacological and psychological therapies, physical activity is increasingly recognized as an effective strategy for managing mental health. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of physical activity in reducing stress and anxiety and provide evidence-based policy recommendations. Methods: This study employs a systematic literature review, sourcing data from EBSCO, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, IEEE Access, and DOAJ. The analysis follows the PRISMA framework, consisting of six key stages: defining the research question, identifying relevant studies, selecting studies, mapping data, synthesizing results, and expert consultation. Results: Regular moderate-intensity physical activity, such as jogging, yoga, and cycling, has been found effective in reducing stress and anxiety through the release of endorphins and serotonin. Additionally, participation in group exercise activities enhances social support, further benefiting mental health. Conclusion: Physical activity is an effective non-pharmacological intervention and should be integrated into public health policies. Greater access to community-based exercise programs is needed to support mental health initiatives.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on students' mental health. However, little is known about its psychological effects on students in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of stress among students in Islamic boarding schools and identify the associated contributing factors in the early post-pandemic period. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from March to April 2023 involving 425 students from four Islamic boarding schools in East Java, Indonesia. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that included sociodemographic information and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) to measure stress levels. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between stress and various factors. Results: The findings showed that 30.64% of students experienced stress. Factors significantly associated with stress included female gender (OR: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.130–4.190; p < 0.020), length of stay of less than one year (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.204–0.925; p < 0.031), dissatisfaction with allowance (OR, 2.81; 95% CI, 1.238–6.424; p < 0.014), poor communication with friends (OR: 3.60; 95% CI: 1.947–6.659; p < 0.000), and lack of social activities with peers (OR, 4.80; 95% CI, 1.415–16.28; p < 0.012). Conclusion: This study highlights the need for targeted mental health interventions in Islamic boarding schools, particularly those that address financial satisfaction and social relationships. Strengthening peer communication and providing emotional support may help to reduce stress among students in post-pandemic settings.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an escalating public health issue, particularly among the elderly. High salt intake is a modifiable dietary risk factor suspected to accelerate CKD progression. However, large-scale evidence from Indonesia remains scarce. This study investigates the association between salty food consumption and CKD among older adults in Indonesia. Using data from the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia/SKI 2023), we analyzed 97,339 individuals aged 60 and above. Descriptive statistics outlined participant characteristics, while chi-square tests and binary logistic regression assessed associations and adjusted effects. Statistical analyses were conducted using STATA 14.1, with significance set at p < 0.05. Among participants, 89.3% reported consuming salty foods, and CKD prevalence was 0.5%. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between CKD and sex, education, and salty food intake (p < 0.001). Multivariate results indicated that elderly individuals who did not consume salty food had significantly reduced odds of CKD (OR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.54–0.90; p = 0.006), suggesting a protective effect. These findings highlight a strong association between salty food consumption and CKD risk in Indonesia’s aging population. Reducing dietary salt intake may serve as an effective, low-cost intervention for CKD prevention. Urgent public health strategies focusing on dietary behavior change and nutrition education for the elderly are needed to curb the rising burden of kidney disease.

Abstract

In Indonesia, stroke is the leading cause of illness and death among the elderly. Dietary habits, especially fatty food intake, have been identified as changeable risk factors. Nonetheless, there is a scarcity of national data on this relationship among older Indonesian adults. This study sought to investigate the relationship between fatty food intake and stroke occurrence in elderly Indonesians, utilizing data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (Survey Kesehatan Indonesia or SKI). This cross-sectional study was performed using secondary data from SKI 2023, encompassing 97,339 participants aged 60 years and above. The primary outcome was whether a stroke diagnosis was present (yes/no) and the key independent variable was the consumption of fatty foods (yes/no). Additional variables considered were age, gender, education, marital status, employment, residence, and alcohol use. Weighted descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression were conducted using STATA 14.1, with sampling weights applied. The stroke prevalence among elderly participants was 3.2%. The bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between fatty food consumption and stroke (p < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that elderly individuals who avoided fatty foods had a notably reduced risk of stroke (OR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.45–0.58, p < 0.001). Alcohol consumption also had a protective effect (OR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.12–0.43, p < 0.001). There is a significant association between fatty food consumption and stroke among the elderly population in Indonesia. Public health strategies encouraging healthier eating habits could potentially lower the stroke risk in this susceptible group

Abstract

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant public health concern in Timor-Leste, with sociocultural norms, economic disparities, and partner behaviors contributing to its prevalence. Understanding the associated risk factors is crucial for informing prevention strategies. Purpose: This study aimed to examine sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with severe IPV among women in Timor-Leste Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 3,694 women aged 15–49 years who participated in the 2016 Timor-Leste Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The outcome variable was self-reported severe IPV. Independent variables included age, marital status, education, household wealth index, place of residence, geographic region, and husband/partner’s alcohol consumption. Weighted logistic regression models were used to calculate crude and adjusted odds ratios (COR, AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Severe IPV was significantly associated with being aged 25–34 (AOR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.19–2.52), being unmarried/widowed/divorced (AOR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.33–4.92), and having a partner who consumed alcohol (AOR = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.85–3.11). Higher education and better economic status were protective against IPV. Conclusions: Alcohol consumption by partners, lower education levels, and economic disadvantage are key risk factors for severe IPV in Timor-Leste. Policies targeting alcohol reduction, women’s empowerment, and tailored regional interventions are essential to mitigate IPV and its health impacts
