Abstract

This study aims to investigate the multiliteracy pedagogy practices used by EFL-speaking teachers in Indonesia. The study consists of two research questions: 1) How do EFL-speaking teachers in Indonesia implement Multiliteracy Pedagogy in their teaching practices? 2) What are the perceived benefits of using multiliteracy pedagogy practices in EFL-speaking classrooms in Indonesia? The data were collected through open questionnaire and in-depth interview. Open questionnaires were distributed to 19 EFL-speaking teachers in Indonesia. The results indicate that these teachers are implementing some elements of multiliteracy pedagogy, and they use various modes, such as visual, audio, audiovisual, or gestural, to support their teaching. Then, interview was conducted to small sample of the respondents. The data were analyzed through content and thematic analysis. The findings show that multiliteracy pedagogy practices make learners become more active thinkers, more independent learners, and are more engaged in their learning. The benefits of using multiliteracy pedagogy practices in EFL-speaking classrooms in Indonesia include improving learners’ language proficiency, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and enhancing learners’ motivation and engagement. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the current multiliteracy pedagogy practices used by EFL-speaking teachers in Indonesia and sheds light on how these practices are integrated into teaching. The findings suggest that multiliteracy pedagogy practices have several benefits for EFL-speaking learners in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study evaluates the writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMK Hang Nadim Batam in composing autobiographical texts. Autobiography, which involves writing about one’s own life, is a key component of the curriculum for vocational high school students. The primary aim of this study is to assess the proficiency of these students in writing autobiographies. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach, this study analyzes student writing to provide a detailed description of their skills. The analysis includes examining the organization, content logic, grammar (including the use of simple present, past, and future tenses), mechanics (legibility and neatness), and vocabulary (word choice). The findings indicate that students demonstrated a competent level of writing skills. Specifically, their autobiographical texts generally exhibited well-organized content, logical sequencing, appropriate tense usage, and adequate vocabulary. However, there are areas for improvement. The study offers recommendations for teachers, students, and future researchers, suggesting that these findings could serve as a reference for enhancing English instruction and guiding further research in this area.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of video podcasts as a supplementary tool for enhancing speaking proficiency among second-semester higher education students majoring in English, with varying learning styles. It examines the impact of video podcasts on speaking proficiency across visually-dominant, auditory-dominant, and kinesthetic-dominant learners and explores the differences in effects among these three learning styles. It involved 42 respondents, specifically within an Intermediate Speaking course, categorized into three groups based on their dominant learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Data were analysed through paired sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA. The result shows that visually-dominant learners improved from a pretest mean of 60.24 to a posttest mean of 67.48 (p = .000), auditory-dominant learners increased from 60.36 to 66.73 (p = .001), and kinesthetic-dominant learners showed an increase from 64.33 to 72.83 (p = .022). Despite these improvements, the one-way ANOVA indicated no statistically significant differences in the level of improvement among the three learning styles (p = .707) which implies that video podcasts are effective across different learning styles. This study’s findings contribute to the understanding of multimedia tools' role in language learning and the positive impact of utilizing video podcasts on speaking proficiency. The flexibility of video podcasts enables students to learn at their own pace, revisit content, and receive personalized feedback, which can be particularly beneficial for students with different learning styles.

Abstract

Writing a thesis necessitates the presentation of a compelling and well-written argument. The thesis should situate the research within the broader field of study and promote some contributions to the field. A student-writer needs to compose a thesis that reports and justifies the research conducted. This study explores how one undergraduate student-writer at an Indonesian university stages meanings to develop a thesis—as a macro genre, with sound and engaging arguments by using available linguistic resources. It employs tools of text analyses offered by Systemic Functional Linguistics to examine primarily the interpersonal zone of the arguments. This zone is crucial for a writer to stage meanings to engage with others and others’ knowledge in the field of study, utilizing sound arguments as she takes her stances in the academic community. The analysis focused on two key textual features: the organization of meanings to accomplish the social function of the thesis and the utilization of evaluative language resources to engage with others in the literature. This study involved a single respondent, an undergraduate student-writer, as its focus. The analyses indicate that this novice writer employs various linguistic resources to structure her texts in intricate ways. While her argument at the macro-level (the thesis) is structured relatively similarly to the typical thesis, significant differences emerge in her micro-level structure. This study revealed additional deviations in her use of linguistic resources for negotiating arguments at the sentence level (micro-level) and below level, including phrase and word levels.

Abstract

Despite continuous effort to establish an engaging learning environment, there is a lack of motivation among EFL learners in speaking class. Understanding the relationship between autonomy and motivation might provide insights into effective methods of instruction in EFL speaking classes when learners need to strengthen their speaking skills. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between learner autonomy and motivation in higher education, particularly in EFL speaking classes. The research method employed in this correlational study was a questionnaire to assess learner autonomy and motivation. The data were analyzed quantitatively using Pearson product moment and linear regression. The findings indicate a positive correlation between learner autonomy and motivation in EFL speaking classes (r-value = .835; Sig. (2-tailed) .000 < .05). Specifically, learners’ control of cognitive process, independent use of learning resources, learner's control of affective process, and autonomous use of learning skill were significantly correlated with motivation in EFL speaking (r = .731, Sig .001; r = .841, Sig .000; r = .855, Sig .000; r = .753, Sig .000, n=17; Sig .05). Although independent use of technology was not significantly correlated, it had a positive and low correlation towards motivation in EFL speaking (r = .358, Sig .158, n = 17, Sig .05). The five aspects of learner autonomy simultaneously had a strong significant effect on motivation (R2 = .798, p < .001). The findings suggest that educators can design instruction that promote learner autonomy and increase motivation in EFL speaking classes.
