Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi telah mengubah dunia pendidikan menjadi lebih berpusat pada siswa. Keterampilan berbahasa Inggris sangat penting, terutama di sektor industri dan pendidikan di Indonesia. Namun, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, khususnya keterampilan listening, masih menghadapi banyak tantangan. Penggunaan teknologi interaktif dan metode pembelajaran inovatif seperti aplikasi BBC Learning English, CD, video, dan permainan anagram telah menunjukkan hasil yang positif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris siswa. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi kesenjangan dalam keterampilan komunikasi bahasa Inggris di kalangan siswa SMA dan mahasiswa dengan metode partisipatif dan interaktif. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan sebagian besar peserta puas dengan konten dan kualitas materi, meskipun durasi dianggap terlalu singkat. Evaluasi lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pengabdian di masa mendatang.

Abstract

A Through language, we can see someone’s behaviour from their way of speaking. The way speakers behave well can be achieved by paying attention to important aspects of communication; this is called the politeness strategy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies in the ELF interaction of Indonesian students—lecturers both online and offline in the classroom. This study aimed to collect, analyse, and interpret the data that was collected through the WhatsApp application and student-lecturer interaction in the classroom. A descriptive-qualitative method was used to find out the politeness strategy used in EFL interactions with Indonesian students and lecturers. There were four politeness strategies used by students and lecturers, such as the positive politeness strategy, the negative politeness strategy, the bald on record strategy, and the off-record strategy. The positive politeness strategy was found to be the most frequent strategy used in student and lecturer interaction in WhatsApp groups and classrooms. The most frequent strategies used by students and lecturers in their interaction were politeness strategies such as greetings, using in-group identity markers, seeking an agreement, offering promises, being optimistic, and giving gifts.

Abstract

Semantic analysis through the study of contextual meaning theory is a useful approach to examine the meaning of song lyrics in detail. This approach allows us to delve further into the layers of meaning implied behind the series of words contained in the lyrics to reveal aspects that may not be explicitly visible but are at the core of the communication between the songwriter and his audience. This research aims to provide a deeper understanding of concepts such as happiness represented and communicated through poetic language in Taylor Swift’s songs. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method of relevant song lyrics and cognitive semantic studies used in analyzing data sourced from several Taylor Swift songs. The results of this study show that Taylor Swift uses conceptual metaphors and figurative meanings to describe happiness in love relationships. In the song "Lover," Taylor Swift uses metaphors of travel and freedom to express happiness in living their relationship. In "Call It What You Want," she uses light and endurance metaphors to convey the happiness gained from lasting love. In "Sweet Nothing," Swift uses the metaphor of physical manifestation to describe happiness in simple moments.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to enhance English proficiency, specifically in the context of the TOEFL test, which is crucial for measuring language competence in today's globalized world. The webinar targeted teachers and students, providing a platform for interactive learning and discussion. The methodology included delivering theoretical knowledge along with practical exercises, focusing on listening, reading, and structure components of the TOEFL. The results showed high participant satisfaction, with an average score of 4.5 on the content quality and interaction. Participants expressed interest in diverse topics for future sessions, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement in language training programs. The findings underscore the necessity of such community service programs to foster English language skills, thereby enhancing competitive capabilities in the global educational landscape.

Abstract

Social media have transcended their role as mere communication tools, evolving into dynamic spaces where intricate sociolinguistic behaviors are reflected. Lenhart (2020) identified platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and X becoming integral to daily communication and identity expression. It has facilitated cultural exchange and created opportunities for multilingual communication. This study examines the language strategies employed by Indonesian tour guides on social media, focusing on the phenomenon of code-switching and its functions proposed by Hoffman's (1991). The findings found there were three types of code switching used, such as intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching. The most type of code switching uttered by the guide is intra-sentential switching. The function is to incorporating local terms and switching languages, they add cultural nuance, emphasize key points, engage the audience, and vividly convey specific behaviors.

Abstract

This study aims to describe student perceptions of the task learning process for Vocabulary subjects at Universitas Bumigora This research is a qualitative research with descriptive research type. Primary data sources that are the subject of research are students, as well as secondary data sources obtained from the internet or books. Techniques in data collection is done by observation and mediated interview. The results of the study show that the perceptions of students in the implementation of task-based learning on vocabulary subjects are satisfactory, effective and efficient from the students themselves. This is because task-based learning encourages self-directed rather than teacher-directed learning, encourage students to participate actively, and build intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

English Speech Training for elementary school children is a form of community service provided by Bumigora University. This community service activity was held for two months, from May 6, 2023, to June 30, 2023. The purpose of the community service program in the form of English speech training is to improve the public speaking skills of elementary school students in using English. There were some methods used, such as pre-test, early evaluation, orientation, drilling, and feedback. This program received tremendous enthusiasm from the students in the Kapitan environment; this can be seen from the enthusiasm and activeness of the students participating in this training activity. The outcomes of this training activity are an increase in the ability to pronounce words and sentences (pronunciation) and the confidence of the participants to speak or give speeches.

Abstract

This study is about the meaning of speech function in the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidate debates. The purpose of this study is to find out the meaning of speech function of the speech function in Indonesian 2024 presidential candidate debates based on Halliday (2024) classification of speech function. Qualitative research design is used to analyze the data. The result showed that all candidates predominantly utilized statements to convey their vision and mission, indicating a focus on asserting their positions and values. There were offer function employed by all the presidential candidates. The distribution of speech function offer could differ across the sources or speakers analyzed. Question function submitted by the first candidate which is two utterances. The question function delivered by the first candidate Anies Baswedan and the third candidate Ganjar Pranowo. The command utterance was only found in the third candidate Ganjar Pranowo speech.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah mengubah cara pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, mendorong perlunya integrasi literasi digital dalam proses pembelajaran. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan literasi digital dan komunikasi bahasa Inggris siswa SMA melalui pelatihan pembuatan konten kreatif. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di salah satu SMA di Kota Mataram dan melibatkan peserta didik kelas X dan XI. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi tahap observasi, pelatihan interaktif, praktik pembuatan konten digital dalam bahasa Inggris, serta evaluasi hasil. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris serta peningkatan kemampuan mereka dalam mengakses, memahami, dan menghasilkan konten berbahasa Inggris secara digital. Kegiatan ini memberikan kontribusi nyata terhadap pengembangan kompetensi di era teknologi digital, khususnya keterampilan berpikir kritis, kreativitas, dan komunikasi. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan ini dapat dijadikan model dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan relevan dengan kebutuhan generasi digital.
