Abstract

English Speech Training for elementary school children is a form of community service provided by Bumigora University. This community service activity was held for two months, from May 6, 2023, to June 30, 2023. The purpose of the community service program in the form of English speech training is to improve the public speaking skills of elementary school students in using English. There were some methods used, such as pre-test, early evaluation, orientation, drilling, and feedback. This program received tremendous enthusiasm from the students in the Kapitan environment; this can be seen from the enthusiasm and activeness of the students participating in this training activity. The outcomes of this training activity are an increase in the ability to pronounce words and sentences (pronunciation) and the confidence of the participants to speak or give speeches.

Abstract

This study is about the meaning of speech function in the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidate debates. The purpose of this study is to find out the meaning of speech function of the speech function in Indonesian 2024 presidential candidate debates based on Halliday (2024) classification of speech function. Qualitative research design is used to analyze the data. The result showed that all candidates predominantly utilized statements to convey their vision and mission, indicating a focus on asserting their positions and values. There were offer function employed by all the presidential candidates. The distribution of speech function offer could differ across the sources or speakers analyzed. Question function submitted by the first candidate which is two utterances. The question function delivered by the first candidate Anies Baswedan and the third candidate Ganjar Pranowo. The command utterance was only found in the third candidate Ganjar Pranowo speech.

Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital telah mengubah cara pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, mendorong perlunya integrasi literasi digital dalam proses pembelajaran. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan literasi digital dan komunikasi bahasa Inggris siswa SMA melalui pelatihan pembuatan konten kreatif. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di salah satu SMA di Kota Mataram dan melibatkan peserta didik kelas X dan XI. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi tahap observasi, pelatihan interaktif, praktik pembuatan konten digital dalam bahasa Inggris, serta evaluasi hasil. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris serta peningkatan kemampuan mereka dalam mengakses, memahami, dan menghasilkan konten berbahasa Inggris secara digital. Kegiatan ini memberikan kontribusi nyata terhadap pengembangan kompetensi di era teknologi digital, khususnya keterampilan berpikir kritis, kreativitas, dan komunikasi. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan ini dapat dijadikan model dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan relevan dengan kebutuhan generasi digital.

Abstract

This study is about the speech function used in the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidate debates. The purpose of this study is to find out the types and the meaning of speech function and to differentiate and similarities in the speech function in Indonesian 2024 presidential candidate debates based on Halliday (2024) classification of speech function. Qualitative research design is used to analyze the data. This research analyzed speech functions in the fifth Indonesian presidential election debate held on February 4, 2024. Data were sourced from KompasTV Sukabumi’s official YouTube channel and underwent data condensation before analysis. A total of 84 clauses were analyzed, with Anies Baswedan producing 36, while Prabowo Subianto and Ganjar Pranowo each uttered 24. The result showed 84 utterances identified as speech function. The number of speeches delivered by candidate Anies Baswedan’s was 36 utterances, Prabowo Subianto’s was 24 utterances, and Ganjar Pranowo’s was 24 utterances. The most frequently used speech functions are Statement, Offer, Question, and Command.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of positive politeness strategies employed by the main character, Lily Bloom, in the film It Ends With Us (2024). Grounded in the politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987), this qualitative descriptive research aims to (1) identify the types of positive politeness strategies used by or directed toward Lily Bloom and (2) examine which strategies are dominant and how they influence interpersonal relationships and the storyline’s progression. The data were drawn from selected dialogues involving Lily and were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that Lily uses various positive politeness strategies, including giving compliments, using inclusive pronouns, expressing gratitude, offering assistance, and showing empathy. The most frequent strategies include giving compliments, inclusive language, and expressions of gratitude. These strategies not only illustrate Lily’s attempt to build solidarity and closeness with others but also reflect her emotional resilience and interpersonal sensitivity in navigating complex social dynamics. The study contributes to the field of pragmatics by highlighting how politeness strategies serve as both linguistic and narrative tools in contemporary film discourse.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of lexical cohesion in The Little Prince, a novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory of cohesion, with a specific focus on the reiteration category. The objectives of the study are: (1) to identify the types of lexical cohesion used by the main character, the Little Prince; and (2) to analyze how each type contributes to the textual structure and meaning of the narrative. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and discourse analysis approach, this study focuses on the odd-numbered chapters of the novel as the primary data source. The analysis reveals four types of reiteration; repetition, synonymy, antonymy, and superordinate. With repetition being the most dominant (61 occurrences). These cohesive devices are shown to significantly enhance the narrative's coherence, emotional tone, and philosophical nuance. The findings underscore the integral role of lexical cohesion in constructing the character’s voice, and they contribute to a deeper understanding of how linguistic choices support thematic and stylistic unity in literary texts..

Abstract

English skill is an essential skill to be mastered by students nowadays. Since its importance, students need to focus on developing this skill as early as they can. Nevertheless, not all institutions could provide sufficient material and skill to be taught in the class. Based on some observations, students in panti asuhan Nurul Jannah still have some mistakes in speaking using the English language. Thus, efficient English training was needed by students in panti asuhan Nurul Jannah. Lecturers from Bumigora university who were experts in English did community service in panti asuhan Nurul Jannah. This aimed to increase students' ability in English and improve some mistakes and language errors that were still done by the students. This community service was done by applying several methods such as speech, discussion, etc. After several meetings of the training, students in this orphanage showed positive attitude toward the training and most of the students could improve their ability in English.

Abstract

The "Implementation of Everyday English Expression at SMAN 1 Gerung" project aimed to tackle the challenge of enhancing students' practical proficiency in English by integrating everyday language expressions into the educational framework. This initiative responded to the identified gap between formal language instruction and the practical language needs of students, particularly focusing on 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Gerung, in collaboration with their English language instructors. The methodology involved a structured approach beginning with comprehensive pre-testing to assess baseline competencies, followed by an early evaluation phase to tailor instructional strategies based on identified needs. Orientation sessions were conducted to familiarize participants with the program's objectives and methodologies. The core comprised drilling exercises and continuous feedback, which aimed at reinforcing learning and refining language skills. The service yielded notable outcomes, demonstrating significant improvements in students' spoken proficiency and confidence in utilizing English expressions in everyday contexts. Despite challenges such as resource constraints, the active involvement of educators and the strategic implementation of instructional techniques fostered a conducive learning environment. These program's efficacy in enhancing students' English language proficiency and preparing them for practical language use beyond the classroom.

Abstract

Bala Anjani Dance contains a message of gender equality, emphasizing that women and men have equal positions. This social message aims to eliminate gender discrimination and destroy negative stereotypes against women. However, the limitations of traditional art media limit the reach of this message. This study aims to transform masculinity in the choreography of the Bala Anjani Dance, which is full of social values, into a digital comic media based on the Webtoon platform to reach the wider community, especially the younger generation. The research method uses a qualitative-descriptive approach to analyze the art of the Bala Anjani Dance and a design approach to produce comic products. The media transfer process includes several stages: (1) ecranization to transfer the moral message of gender equality into a comic story; (2) reduction, namely simplifying the original story to make it more interesting; (3) additions and variations to the story, setting, and characterization; (4) product testing on 30 students; and (5) implementation, namely the creation of a digital comic to be published on Webtoon. The results of the study produced the character and story of the comic "Bala Anjani" which raises the value of gender equality. Based on the test, 100% of respondents considered the character illustrations attractive, 87% stated that the color composition was harmonious, and 84% considered the storyline easy to understand. All respondents agreed that the story conveys a moral message of gender equality. The final product in the form of comic panels is ready to be published on Webtoon. This study shows that the transformation of traditional art into digital media is effective in conveying social messages to a wider audience. This approach has the potential to be a model for media transfer for other traditional arts to support education and gender equality campaigns.

Abstract

This study aims to describe student perceptions of the task learning process for Vocabulary subjects at Universitas Bumigora This research is a qualitative research with descriptive research type. Primary data sources that are the subject of research are students, as well as secondary data sources obtained from the internet or books. Techniques in data collection is done by observation and mediated interview. The results of the study show that the perceptions of students in the implementation of task-based learning on vocabulary subjects are satisfactory, effective and efficient from the students themselves. This is because task-based learning encourages self-directed rather than teacher-directed learning, encourage students to participate actively, and build intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation.
