Abstract

Collection preservation is a crucial aspect of a library system. A higher education library called the University of Computer Indonesia (Unikom) Library uses preservation to make sure that users can access collections in the future. This study aims to examine the collection preservation activities at the Unikom Library, focusing on the analysis of preventive and curative preservation activities. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The findings show that preventive preservation activities at the Unikom Library include educating users, controlling room temperature and humidity, keeping collections away from direct sunlight, installing naphthalene balls on bookshelves, and setting up CCTV, flap barriers, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinklers. Meanwhile, curative activities include covering library materials, fumigation by third parties, regular cleaning of rooms and collections, binding library materials, replacing damaged covers or pages of books by third parties, and media conversion (digitization) of thesis collections done using a scanner through the scanning process. This study concludes that both preventive and curative preservation activities at the Unikom Library have been carried out effectively.

Abstract

The era of information society demands that libraries transform from conventional libraries to digital libraries. In the effort to develop digital libraries, the focus should not solely be on increasing the number of collections but also on addressing more complex issues, including user needs analysis, policy formulation, collection selection, collection procurement, weeding, and evaluation. This study aims to examine the development of collections in digital libraries, which encompasses user needs analysis, collection development policies, collection selection, collection procurement, collection weeding, and collection evaluation. The research employs a narrative literature review methodology, analyzing ten references indexed in Google Scholar from the years 2013 to 2023. The findings indicate that in analyzing user needs, libraries assess visitor statistics, collect borrowing, and distribute surveys. Digital collection development policies may vary among libraries; however, principles of relevance, completeness, currency, collaboration, and user orientation can guide them. Collection selection is based on criteria established by the library, and digital collection procurement occurs through donations, grants, e-book purchases, e-journal subscriptions, and the digitization of printed collections. Digital collection weeding is conducted by examining usage statistics and the relevance of digital collections to user information needs. The evaluation of digital collections is performed through the distribution of questionnaires and an analysis of digital collection usage statistics. This study concludes that the development of digital library collections varies across libraries in terms of efforts and methods yet follows the same stages, from user needs analysis to evaluation.

Abstract

Collection development is a critical aspect as it significantly contributes to shaping a knowledgeable, broad-minded, and morally upright younger generation, thereby enhancing the quality of education in Indonesia. The purpose of collection development is to ensure that libraries possess collections that are relevant, up-to-date, and aligned with user needs. By providing a diverse and pertinent array of books, library users can easily acquire knowledge, develop and refine their information literacy skills, cultivate their character through inspirational and moral readings, and make informed decisions in their daily lives. This study aims to offer a review based on several previous studies regarding libraries in their efforts to provide collections that meet the demands, interests, and preferences of users while considering the quality of the reading materials offered. The methodology employed is a narrative literature review, which compares and analyzes existing theories and research, referencing several prior studies related to the urgency of library collection development, with a total of five references analyzed. The stages of collection development, according to Edward Evans, include user analysis, determining selection policies, selection activities, procurement, weeding, and evaluation activities. The analysis of the five references indicates that in developing library collections, adherence to four main principles is essential: relevance, currency, completeness, and collaboration. The collection development process is a crucial activity for libraries to provide services that align with the evolving needs and interests of users over time.

The primary objectives are to evaluate libraries' contributions to plagiarism prevention, optimize the use of information resources to mitigate such practices and analyze the impact of plagiarism on users and information institutions. The methodology employed is a narrative literature review, analyzing eleven references related to libraries' role in plagiarism prevention. Findings indicate that libraries play a significant role through comprehensive information resource provision and services. Utilization of information sources is achieved through effective collection management and implementation of technology in service processes. The study identifies negative impacts of plagiarism, including career obstacles and future opportunities for perpetrators, as well as detriment to original information owners. For libraries, plagiarism can diminish institutional credibility and integrity. In conclusion, libraries have a crucial role in preventing plagiarism, emphasizing the importance of awareness and proactive measures in combating this practice. This research underscores the necessity for libraries to remain vigilant and actively engage in plagiarism prevention, thereby maintaining academic integrity and supporting ethical information use in both educational and professional environments.

Abstract

Cultural information literacy plays a crucial role in preserving traditional arts in the modern era, especially among diaspora communities. The Genta Sentramas community, as a prominent and actively engaged diaspora community in cultural activities, needs to possess a good understanding and skills in cultural information literacy. This study aims to identify the forms of cultural information literacy used by the Genta Sentramas community in promoting and preserving Banyumas traditional arts in the city of Bandung. This research employed a qualitative method. The purposive sampling technique was used with the criterion that the samples were members of the Genta Sentramas Community. The results of this study indicate that the cultural information literacy of the Genta Sentramas Community in preserving Banyumas culture is carried out through the utilization of information technology. This includes social media and digital platforms that allow this diaspora community to document and disseminate information about traditional arts, including Banyumas dance and music, to the younger generation and the wider community. Other forms include visits to local cultural heritage sites and conducting art workshops. Cultural information literacy not only facilitates information access but also encourages the community to take an active role in producing and promoting their cultural elements. Thus, cultural information literacy becomes a vital instrument in maintaining the sustainability of Banyumas traditional arts in diaspora and ensuring that cultural identity remains alive amidst the challenges of modernization.

Abstract

Backgroud: Limited budgets have compelled libraries to innovate in order to ensure their sustainability. One effective strategy for addressing budget constraints is interlibrary collaboration. Interlibrary collaboration involves cooperative activities between two or more libraries and may also include partnerships with other information-related organizations, such as reference centers, data analysis institutions, and others. Such collaboration is essential because no single library, regardless of its scale or resources, can comprehensively collect all available information. Every library faces limitations in fully meeting users’ information needs. Interlibrary collaboration serves to bridge these gaps by enabling access to information that may not be available in a single institution. Purpose: This study aims to explore research on interlibrary collaboration by analyzing its historical development, supporting and inhibiting factors, and its impact on both users and institutions. Methods: The study employs a narrative literature review method, using the Google Scholar database to identify relevant references. A total of 14 journal articles were analyzed. Results: The findings suggest that interlibrary collaboration can be a viable solution for enhancing library collections. It also fosters stronger institutional relationships, as collaboration contributes to collection development and improves overall library quality. However, several challenges persist, such as limited personnel, which can slow down collaborative processes, and inadequate funding, which can hinder the sustainability of such initiatives. Despite these obstacles, interlibrary collaboration continues to evolve, offering opportunities to refine library strategies and improve the effectiveness of cooperative efforts.
