Abstract

The rapid advancement of surveillance technology, particularly the adoption of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), has revolutionized public safety measures. In Makassar City's Lorong Wisata, CCTV serves as a critical tool for monitoring public spaces, reducing crime, and enhancing the sense of security. This study aims to explore the effectiveness and challenges of CCTV implementation as a digital surveillance mechanism. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving local government officials, law enforcement, and community members, analyzed with NVivo 14 software. Results indicate that CCTV has significantly improved public safety by deterring crime and facilitating law enforcement investigations. However, concerns about privacy infringement and the psychological "chilling effect" are prominent, as constant surveillance influences community behavior and limits personal freedom. Furthermore, the potential misuse of collected data raises additional privacy concerns. This study emphasizes the importance of transparent regulations, active community engagement, and periodic evaluations to balance public safety and individual privacy. Holistic approaches integrating technology with social reform are necessary to ensure effective and ethical surveillance practices.

Abstract

The concept of state digital-surveillance has been recognized as a significant factor impacting individual privacy and social dynamics, drawing greater attention in sociological literature. However, existing studies often examine digital surveillance, social control, and privacy in isolation, and there is limited empirical research establishing clear causal links between state digital-surveillance and its broader societal impacts. As a result, there is a need for a confirmatory study that addresses this gap. The literature on the relationship between state digital-surveillance and its effects on privacy and autonomy remains fragmented, with few comprehensive studies exploring how surveillance practices shape societal structures. This scoping review utilizes the PCC model of PRISMA guidelines to investigate these connections. It focuses on the causal relationship between state digital-surveillance, individual freedoms, and societal control, providing an overview of existing literature and identifying areas for further research. Specifically, this review highlights the intersection of digital surveillance and social behavior, offering insights that map the complex linkages between state digital-surveillance and its effects on modern society.

Abstract

Tourism Village governance networks are something that is still relatively unfamiliar to be developed in urban tourism. This research aims to analyze the principles of governance networks in the Bandung City Tourism Village (Braga Creative Tourism Village). The research was conducted using qualitative descriptive methods. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and document studies with the stakeholders involved. The results of the research show that of the four dimensions of governance networks, there is one dimension that is working well, namely formation, while the three dimensions, namely operations, performance accountability, and desire, are not yet working well. The findings in this research are that the state needs to have a greater role than other actors because society's capacity is still small in the economic aspect and there is a link between the success of governance networks and the maturity of democracy in a country, so that the more mature a level of democracy, the greater the level of governance networks success obtained.
