Abstract

A total of three tirucallane-type triterpenoids were successfully isolated from the n-hexane extract of the stem bark of Dysoxylum gaudichaudianum: 4,4,14-trimethyl-3-oxo-24-nor-5α,13α,14β,17α,20S-chol-7-en-23-oic (1), toonapubesin B (2), and 3β,22S-dihydroxy-tirucalla-7,24-dien-23-one (3). These compounds were isolated from D. gaudichaudianum for the first time. Structural characterization of the isolated compounds was accomplished through a series of spectroscopic analyses, including HR-TOF-MS, IR, and NMR. Based on previous reports, compound 1 was isolated from a member of the Meliaceae family for the first time. The cytotoxic properties of the isolated tirucallane-type triterpenoids were evaluated against cervical HeLa cancer cells. Among them, compounds 1 and 3 were inactive, with IC50 values > 100 µM, while compound 2 exhibited the highest cytotoxicity, with an IC50 value of 29.23 µM, with moderate activity. A structure–activity relationship also indicated the variation in cytotoxicity attributed to substituent effects within the molecular structures. The modification of the side chain in tirucallane-type triterpenoids was shown to be essential for their cytotoxic activity against human cervical cancer lines.

Abstract

Wood ear mushroom is a traditional edible and medicinal mushroom widely consumed as a food supplement. The color of the fruit body is a crucial indicator of commercial quality that influences consumer purchasing interest. However, color quality can decrease due to inappropriate post-harvest technology. The application of nano edible coating, packaging, and storage temperature can help maintain color stability during storage. This study aims to determine the effect of nano edible coating, packaging, and storage temperature on the color of wood ear mushrooms based on the parameters L*, a*, b*, Chroma, Hue, Browning Index, and color difference. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a combination of nano edible coating (sodium alginate and aloe vera), packaging (biodegradable, wrap, and vacuum plastic), and storage temperatures (±25 ℃, 10 ℃, and 5 ℃). Each treatment was repeated twice, resulting in 38 experimental units, each consisting of 3 mushrooms, total of 114 mushrooms. The results showed that nano aloe vera with vacuum packaging at a storage temperature of 5 ℃ provided the best results in maintaining the color of the wood ear mushroom during storage, with the lowest lightness and color difference values.

Abstract

Wood ear mushrooms are often consumed in Asia and Tropical America for their jelly-like texture, health, and freshness. However, they are easily damaged due to microbes and poor postharvest handling, which affects quality. The combination of nano edible coating, packaging, and storage temperature offers a solution to these issues. This study aims to evaluate the effect of nano edible coating, packaging, and storage temperature on the color (L*, a*, and b*), water content, and antioxidant properties (total phenolic and flavonoid) of wood ear mushrooms. The study was conducted at the Horticulture Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design with a total of 18 combinations of nano edible coating (sodium alginate and aloe vera), packaging (biodegradable, wrap, and vacuum plastic), and storage temperature (±25 ℃, 10 ℃, and 5 ℃). Each treatment was replicated twice, resulting in 36 experimental units, with 3 mushrooms per unit for a total of 108 mushrooms. The results showed a significant effect of the combination treatments on L* at 9 days after treatment (DAT), a* at 6 DAT, water content at 6 and 9 DAT, total phenolics, and total flavonoids during the storage period. Nano aloe vera with vacuum packaging at 5 ℃ gave the best effect on L* value at 9 DAT, water content at 6 and 9 DAT, total phenolic at 3 and 6 DAT, and total flavonoid at 6 DAT. These results indicated the potential of the treatment in maintaining the quality of the wood ear mushroom during storage.

Abstract

Climate change, with global temperatures rising by 1.09°C from 1850–1900 to 2011–2020, threatens potato production, a critical staple crop, by exceeding the optimal temperature range of 15–20°C. This review synthesizes over 45 peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 from Google Scholar and ScienceDirect to evaluate the physiological, morphological, and tuber quality responses of potatoes to high temperatures and to identify adaptive cultivation strategies for sustainable production. High temperatures reduce photosynthetic efficiency through chlorophyll degradation and stomatal closure, increase respiration, and divert photosynthates to vegetative growth, leading to 18–32% yield losses globally by the 2050s. Heat-tolerant varieties, such as Atlantic (11.47 tons/ha), Merbabu-17 (11.04 tons/ha), and Granola (3.61 tons/ha), maintain productivity in medium-altitude lands. Plant growth regulators (PGRs), including BAP, melatonin, and paclobutrazol, enhance tuber yield by regulating hormonal balance and antioxidant activity. Drip irrigation and mulching (e.g., straw, wheat, plastic films) improve water use efficiency and buffer soil temperature. These integrated strategies of heat-tolerant varieties, PGRs, irrigation, and mulching offer practical solutions to mitigate heat stress and ensure sustainable potato production under changing climate conditions.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the yield responses of red chili to three agricultural buildings (greenhouse, screenhouse, open field), four nutrient solution volumes (100%, 75%, 50%, 25% ETc) and two cultivars (Pilar and Osaka). This is the first study to assess the combined effects of agricultural buinding type, nutrient volume based on ETc, and two red chili cultivars (Pilar and Osaka) using a split-splt plot design under tropical-dry season conditions. The experiment was conducted from August 2024 to February 2025 at Padjadjaran University, Indonesia, using a split-split plot design with 24 treatment combinations and three replications. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT at the 5% level. The results showed no interaction among three factors but each had a significant individual effect. Greenhouse conditions significantly increase the number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, individual fruit weight and fruit length. Nutrient volume of 75% ETc and 100% ETc produced comparable result for fruit number and fruit weight per plant. The Pilar cultivar outperformed Osaka in fruit weight and diameter. These findings suggest that greenhouse cultivation with 75% ETc and Pilar cultivar enhance yield and supporting sustainable chili production in tropical regions.

Abstract

Straw mushrooms are one of the nutritious edible mushrooms with high economic value. However, color changes during storage are one of the problems that impact the marketability. Post-harvest treatment in the form of the use of nano edible coatings, packaging, and storage temperatures can prevent gas exchange, control humidity and anti-browning agents in straw mushrooms. This study aims to evaluate the effect of nano edible coatings, packaging types, and different storage temperatures on the color stability of straw mushrooms. This study used a Completely Randomized Design consisting of a combination of nano edible coating treatments (nano sodium alginate and nano aloe vera), packaging types (vacuum, biodegradable, wrap packaging), and storage temperatures (room temperature (±25°C), 10°C, and 5°C), so that there are 18 treatment combinations. Each treatment was repeated twice so there were 36 experimental units. Each experimental unit consisted of two samples so that there were 72 samples at each observation time (1, 3, 5 days after storage), so that the total samples were 216. The results of the study showed that the combination treatment of nano sodium alginate with wrap packaging at a temperature of 10°C showed the best L*, a*, and hue values during 5 days of storage.

Abstract

The production of 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper can be increased using organic chicken manure. However, the application of ethephon is needed during fertilization due to the significantly slow flower initiation. Therefore, this study aims to determine the interaction between chicken manure and ethephon on the growth, yield, and quality of the 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper. Planting is carried out 829 meters above sea level (masl), and a factorial randomized block experimental design comprises 2 factors with 3 replications. The first factor is the dose of chicken manure (10, 20, 30, and 40 t/ha), while the second is the ethephon concentration (0, 500, 1000, and 1500 ppm). The results showed no interaction between poultry manure and ethephon on the growth, yield, and quality of the 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper. According to the doses of chicken manure, 40 t/ha significantly affects the flower initiation, fruit number, weight, length, and diameter, as well as capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin. The 30 t/ha shows the highest value for the number of leaves and productive branches, while 20 tons dose/ha influences flavonoids, phenolics, and total carotenoids. The ethephon concentration of 1500 ppm significantly affects the flower initiation, fruit length, diameter, capsaicin, and dihydrocapsaicin.
