Abstract

The program of Pengabdian Kepada Masysarakat (Public Community Service) is aimed the literacy improvement training for elementary and junior high school children aims to provide students as well as teachers with information assistance about the importance of literacy for the development of knowledge in Indonesian society. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students from the English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, HKBP Nommensen University with students from Czech University. The program of PKM Activity was started on July 25th, 2022, and ended on July 26th, 2022. It is very clear that the cause of the low literacy ability (in terms of reading) is the oral tradition that is still rooted in society. In addition, related to elementary schools, the school system still does not provide opportunities for literacy traditions to students. This also happened to students at SD and SMP HKBP Sidorame Medan. This problem is trying to be minimized by conducting community service programs related to literacy for elementary and junior high school students. The Project represents one of the important areas of development of reading literacy in school. The most positive feature is the fact that there are large numbers of identified target groups, not only students but also teachers. Teachers themselves should expose students to literacy. Literacy should become a culture.

Abstract

Translation’s core ideology lies in guiding translators' decision-making processes, particularly concerning the social and cultural aspects of source and target texts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. It delved into the translators’ ideological stance in rendering an English novel into Indonesian, focusing on vocative verbal exchanges. The analysis employed Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis techniques (2014), incorporated Molina and Albir's translation procedures (2002), as well as Newmark's methods (1988). Venuti's theory (2003) was utilized to unveil the translator's ideology. Findings reveal that the translator is inclined towards foreignization at the word and phrase levels. This was juxtaposed with a preference for domestication at the clause and sentence levels. This suggests a nuanced approach, where the translator aimed to preserve the source text's essence in smaller linguistic units while enhancing readability in larger units for the target audience. In essence, the translator strategically positions themselves between the source and target languages, neither leaning too closely towards one nor the other, striving for a neutral stance that upholds the original message while ensuring accessibility for the target readers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to explore (1) the implementation of HOTS strategies in teaching reading comprehension on Kurikulum Merdeka and (2) to know the students’ responses towards the implementation of HOTS in the eleventh grade of SMA Swasta Pembda 1 Gunungsitoli. This research is a descriptive qualitative with 76 eleventh-grade students and two EFL teachers as subjects of the research. Data was collected from observation, interviews, and questionnaires Two teachers were interviewed and students in two classes each received a questionnaire. The collected data was processed and analysed to provide answers to the research questions. Following that, a descriptive data interpretation is given. Despite the improvements needed, both fostered positive learning environments. Questionnaire analysis revealed 68% of students' positivity towards HOTS strategies, calling for varied problem-solving approaches and alignment of teaching strategies with student interests and motivation. Students favoured group projects and reading analysis but highlighted motivation, learning facility, and reading material adequacy. The implementation of HOTS in teaching reading comprehension at SMA Swasta Pembda 1 Gunungsitoli reflects the efforts by both teachers to integrate critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity by (1) choosing suitable texts, (2) questioning the students, (3) asking the author’s point of view from the texts, (4) gathering information, (5) mind mapping, (6) group discussion, and (7) guessing inferring meaning. Teacher 1 emphasized comprehensive HOTS integration, while Teacher 2 showed mastery of the material with management challenges. A collaborated effort between teachers and students is pivotal for optimizing HOTS and enhancing student outcomes. However, challenges related to students' motivation for reading, the utilization of school facilities, and the need for appropriate reading materials remain areas for improvement in enhancing students' engagement and comprehension in reading comprehension activities under the HOTS framework.
