Abstract

This study examines the discursive transformations and contested meanings of belis, a dowry tradition in East Nusa Tenggara, by analyzing how it is debated, redefined, and reinforced in digital spaces. Using Foucauldian Discourse Analysis, it interrogates the power relations, regimes of truth, and subject positions articulated in public discourse surrounding belis. Traditionally, belis served as a social contract symbolizing the union of two families through marriage and reinforcing communal bonds through the exchange of valuable items from the groom’s family to the bride’s. However, contemporary interpretations of belis have shifted under social, economic, and cultural transformations.. Drawing on data from YouTube broadcasts and user-generated comments, this research explores how digital platforms mediate public discourse on belis. The analysis reveals that online debates increasingly frame belis through the lens of economic logic and social prestige, often prioritizing material value over its metaphysical and symbolic significance. This discursive shift reflects a broader cultural reconfiguration in which traditional practices are questioned, redefined, or reinforced within digital spaces. Ultimately, the study argues that the transformation of belis illustrates how digital discourse contributes to the rearticulation of cultural meaning, exposing tensions between heritage and modernity, and between symbolic reciprocity and commodification.

Abstract

This research explores the perceptions of the millennial generation of the belis tradition in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) on social media, particularly Twitter. Belis is a traditional dowry practice in East Nusa Tenggara, deeply rooted in cultural significance as a symbol of respect, social recognition, and the familial alliance between the bride and groom’s families. The belis tradition has recently faced scrutiny from the millennials, who question its relevance in the modern era. This research employs qualitative analysis, drawing on primary data from tweets featuring the hashtag #TradisiBelisNTT. These tweets were examined through Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA) following the six stages as outlined by Willig (2008): (1) Discursive Construction, (2) Discourse, (3) Action Orientation, (4) Positioning, (5) Practice, (6) Subjectivity. The findings suggest that belis is frequently perceived as an economic burden for men, hindering financial equality in marriage and prompting individuals to seek alternatives arrangements. The discourse as expressed in X reveals intricate power dynamics, as the millennial challenges traditional cultural norms and calls for reform in more inclusive and equitable cultural practices. The findings highlight the tension between preserving heritage and advocating for change, offering insights into how digital spaces facilitate dialogue on cultural reform.

Abstract

The Dayak Maanyan community recognizes two types of languages. The language used daily and the language used in traditional rituals. The language used in the ritual is arranged in the form of paired clauses with similar meanings. This article will examine the meaning relation between words in the paired clauses. The research was conducted in the East Barito district, Central Kalimantan province. This study's data collection area is the East Hamlet District in Jaar Village. Documentation of data in ritual leader utterances is done by transcribing recorded speeches during the ritual and recordings during direct interviews with ritual leaders to obtain the entire content of the ritual speech. Based on the results of data analysis from 840 pairs of transcribed clauses, The researcher found that the relation of synonymous meaning dominated the relation of meaning between the two clauses. The researcher also found the meaning relationship between class inclusion and meronymy and case relation. The pattern of meaning relations formed from the words in the paired clauses is that a is equal to b, b is a type of a, a is a component of b, a is a member of b, place b is part of the area of a, b is made of a, a has b, a is related to b, a is b, a does b, a becomes b, does a is accepted by b, does a uses b, does a aims to b.

Abstract

The significant number of visitors visiting the Sunan Bonang Tomb in Indonesia is believed to contribute to the commodification of sacred zones for religious tourism at the tomb. This study focused on exploring how sacred zones are transformed into religious tourism destinations at the Sunan Bonang tomb in Tuban, Indonesia. Qualitative research involved gathering field data through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. Researchers conducted data triangulation to confirm the accuracy of the gathered data. The research results were examined using Foucault's perspectives through archaeological and genealogical approaches. This study identified key factors contributing to the commodification of Sunan Bonang's tomb for religious tourism, including: 1) the established religious tradition within Islamic communities that influence the occurrence of commodification, 2) government support aimed at enhancing the attraction of cultural products for religious tourism, and 3) the role of the foundation as the holder of management authority managing the commodification of Sunan Bonang's tomb for religious tourism. Commodification focuses more on creating sacred zones at the Sunan Bonang’s Tomb.

In conformity with the results, the local online media are not neutral. Further, the news text framing of the online media professionalism in reporting the Pacitan Pilkada was as follows: 1) political culture in Pacitan, 2) ethical competence, 3) legal competence, 4) knowledge competence. Those competencies must be possessed by a journalist. Even more, they were carrying out political activities such as the 2020 Pilkada. The professionalism of journalists was necessarily needed, especially in Indonesia’s democratic party implementation to elect legislative and executive leaders who were truly coming from the people’s soul.

Abstract

This study discusses the wise advice related to Sufism aspects conveyed by Raden Panji Natarata which is packaged in Sêrat Bayanullah based on the character of each têmbang. The purpose of this research is to describe Raden Panji Natarata’s mindset as outlined in the rhetoric of têmbang-têmbang macapat. The method employed descriptive qualitative. The results showed that Raden Panji Natarata was quite skilled at mixing and matching his stories into a da’wah field according to the characteristics of the têmbang. Of the various têmbang macapat presented in this Sêrat Bayanullah, Raden Panji Natarata did not use têmbang durma. This was because têmbang durma has a character that tends to be harsh and angry so that it is not in accordance with the content of the da’wah proclaimed by Raden Panji Natarata. Thus, this locality nuanced da’wah element has an aesthetic and humanistic impression. As the title embedded in this literary work, Sêrat Bayanullah means the explanation of the chapter of Allah. Thus, it is hoped that this literary work can be a reference for understanding the nature of the chapter of Allah.
