Abstract

Abstract

This research aimed to discover how male and female students used visual hierarchy in their learning videos. There were 7 female students and 6 male students from the English Department, Education, and Teacher Training Faculty engaged in this study. This study used a visual content analysis design and is qualitative in nature. The instruments used were 13 videos produced by the respondents containing teaching material for speaking class. The data collection was carried out through identifying, classifying, verifying, and generating meanings of the visual elements by peering into the visual elements embedded into the video such as style or shape, color, line, space, and scale to create and convey meaning intended. The data were later analyzed using interactive analysis by classifying out the irrelevant data, then displaying the data, to be later verifying them theoretically. The results reveal that, for female students, the style used was generally bright-colored animated visuals with varied textures such as furry animals or glossy cute ladies. The space is rather crowded and the object composition is mostly occupied on the right or left with standard scaling. Lines were used with varied width and weights. For male students, more natural style was engaged, muted colors without the implementation of lines and textures. The spacing is also plain, the object composition is centered, and the scaling is small, no lines were employed. It implies that female students engaged various visual elements in video editing compared to male students. Keywords: Visual, Hierarchy Analysis, Learning Video, Gender Preferences, Design in ELT

Abstract

Instrument is an important element in research, including in educational research. In measuring learning environment formed in a teaching process, discrete variables need to be involved. Thence, understanding that teaching-learning process has varied pedagogical outcome(s), teachers and instructors can focus on their teaching orientation—learner-centeredness, knowledge-centeredness, or assessment-centeredness—and can avoid zoning-out of context during teaching with these factorial discrete variables. There are 15 factors determining the centeredness propensity in a research instrument developed based on Bransfrod et al. (2001). This study aims to simplify and reduce these factors to obtain dominant factors that influence the centeredness in a learning environment by using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The study was conducted by collecting data through questionnaires to 10 respondents. Finally, 5 major factors were obtained. The main factor has an Eigenvalue of 3.95 with a variance of 26.38%. The second factor has an Eigenvalue of 3.51 with a variance of 23.43%. The third factor has an Eigenvalue of 2.46 with a variance of 16.44%. The fourth factor has an Eigenvalue of 1.95 with a variance of 12.99%. The fifth factor has an Eigenvalue of 1.10 with a variance of 7.37%. The overall factor gives a cumulative diversity proportion of 86.64%. Keywords: Construct validity, Assessment, Eigenvalue, and Principal Component Analysis.

Abstract

This review article presents varied perspectives on teaching methods used in speaking classes. The aims of this study is to give insights on teaching methods that can be adopted, combined, or adapted in accordance with the actual condition of the classes. This information is considered to be important for English teachers, specifically, and for all language instructors and researchers, in general. There are 12 research articles being reviewed in this article under the topic of teaching methods in speaking. These articles were summarized to see the essentials being delivered, challenges presented, and further queries left unanswered which are beneficial for further research to be explored. The result shows that the most striking element in speaking classes is verbal oral expression. All teachers must encourage their students to speak. Later, it is psychological aspects (moods) and learning environment. Mostly, happy environment—not stiff and meticulous environment—brings more willingness for students to speak. Last, not giving them pressure on grammatical aspects is also a spur towards their motivation to speak. Keywords: Teaching Speaking, Learning Speaking, ELT Methods, and EFL Methods

Abstract

In spite of being included into receptive skill, reading is no longer considered as a passive activity of learning. It is known that readers should be actively engaged during the reading process in attempt to achieve comprehension. This study sought the impacts of the application of modeled reading in increasing students’ reasoning skill, both verbally and logically. Conducted by following quasi experimental characteristics, this study employed one-group pretest post-test design. There were 23 college students involved as the samples who were given a pretest, teaching treatment, and a post-test. The instruments used were two types of test: verbal reasoning test and logical reasoning test. Each set consists of 10 questions. During the data collection or test, the students were given 25 minutes to answer each set, for both the pretest and the posttest. Later, the data were analyzed using normality test and t-test to see if there is any significance increase after the treatment. The results unveil that both skills enhance after the treatment with modeled reading. First, students’ ability in verbal reasoning ability increases from 34.7 to 77 and logical reasoning ability increases from 65 to 83.4 in average. In conclusion, applying modeled reading can expand students’ cognitive ability in sharpening their verbal and logical reasoning which are beneficial during their learning, especially in reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study sought to prove whether there is an inclination in students’ ability before and after video-editing treatments. This study was carried out under the umbrella of quasi-experimental study as it involved one group pretes-posttest design. There were 13 students chosen through the procedure of total sampling. They were given a pretest to make 3 videos—3 minutes in duration each—in topic of Describing People, Inviting People, and Accepting and Refusing Invitation. Later, six treatments were given: three treatments of video-editing and three other were about material design. Afterwards, the post-test was essentially similar with pretest regarding the procedural means. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22 by employing the formula of normality test and Z-Score to perform hypothesis testing. The results uncovered that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is consequently accepted because the rvalue obtained from the Z-Score is 2.63, which is higher than rtable= 0.47 (df=11, α=0.05, right tailed). Additionlly, the average score for the 13 samples before applying video editing procedures was 56.23, and after the treatments, this score incilned to be 79.Then in can be concuded that after obtaining the treatments, students' performance in terms of video editing abilities with reference to material design or speaking class has necessarily improved. The finding implies that it is best to train teacher and prospective teachers with video-editing ability to enable them design good and convenient teaching materials in the future where digital era has transmerged into all pedagogical aspects.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i2.8817

Abstract

Since many say watching movies can have a positive effect on language learning outcomes, this research was done to find out which skills movies can contribute most to, whether speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar or cultural aspects. A qualitative research method was used for this study. This study was done to find out the teachers’ perceptions of using English movies in English Language Teaching (ELT) processes. Teachers from three different levels: primary, secondary, and senior high-school teachers were asked to answer a questionnaire set in accordance with the research topic. Five of them were senior high school teachers, two of them were junior high school teachers, and three of them were elementary school teachers. Creative interviews were also used as an additional data source. The results showed that most of the teachers agreed that movies play their biggest role and considerable advantages in developing cultural aspects and listening skills. Furthermore, some integration is possible between listening and speaking as well as with reading and writing because watching movies works better with integration of skills. Apparently, even though vocabulary can develop with this technique, grammar is not enhanced alone without being accompanied by writing.
