Abstract

The modernization of Islamic educational institutions has become a crucial issue in line with social change, scientific developments, and advances in digital technology. This study aims to examine the concept, direction, and practice of modernizing Islamic education through the reintegration of knowledge, renewal of thinking and learning methods, improvement of educational quality, and the role of Islamic education in facing the challenges of modernization. The study uses a qualitative approach through a literature review by analyzing scientific books, academic journals, and relevant documents. The results of the study indicate that the modernization of Islamic education is directed at unifying religious knowledge and general knowledge within a unified scientific framework, developing progressive and inclusive learning methods, improving teacher competency and adapting curriculum based on Islamic values, and strengthening digital literacy and Islamic ethics for students. Modernization practices in modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), science and technology-based Islamic schools, and Islamic community organizations demonstrate that educational reform can go hand in hand with the strengthening of Islamic identity. This study confirms that the modernization of Islamic education is an adaptive and sustainable process focused on developing a generation that is knowledgeable, moral, and plays an active role in modern society.

Abstract

Islamic educational institutions are entities or bodies that regulate and implement Islamic education, having an organized structure and responsibility for the implementation of Islamic education. Therefore, these Islamic educational institutions must be able to create an environment that supports the effective implementation of education in accordance with their roles and duties, such as schools (madrasahs) that are responsible for the Islamic education process. The purpose of this study is to find and analyze the Models of Islamic Educational Institutions. This research uses a library research approach, which involves describing phenomena or concepts based on existing literature sources and theories, concepts, or results from previous research. The results of this study indicate that through comprehensive religious teaching, pesantrens help build a strong understanding of Islamic values, ethics, and morality. Thus, pesantrens play an important role in shaping an individual's character and spirituality, which in turn will have a positive impact on the social life of the community.

Abstract

This study examines the contributions of Muslim scholars to the development of science and technology from the medieval period to the modern era, the intellectual learning traditions that supported scientific advancement, and the factors contributing to the decline of scientific productivity in the Muslim world. Using a qualitative descriptive and historical approach, this research analyzes the roles of prominent Muslim figures such as Ibn al-Haytham in optics, Al-Khawarizmi in mathematics, Al-Zahrawi in medicine, Al-Farabi in philosophy, as well as modern scientists including Abdus Salam, Ahmed Zewail, and Maryam Mirzakhani. The results indicate that Islamic civilization played a significant role in establishing the foundations of modern science through rational, empirical, and systematic methodologies rooted in the Islamic worldview, which integrates faith, ethics, and knowledge. Scientific activities were understood as acts of worship aimed at achieving human welfare. However, the decline of Muslim scientific contributions was influenced by political instability, weakened educational institutions, intellectual stagnation, colonial domination, the dichotomy between religious and secular sciences, and the limited development of research culture. This study highlights the importance of revitalizing an integrative and ethical Islamic scientific tradition to strengthen the development of science and technology within contemporary Islamic education.
