Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of English language proficiency and an essential foundation for young learners. However, in Indonesian EYL classrooms, vocabulary instruction often remains teacher-centered and monotonous, leading to limited engagement and low achievement. This study investigated how Wordwall, a gamified digital platform, could be integrated within a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design to support vocabulary learning. Conducted with 22 fifth-grade students in a primary school, the research followed two CAR cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, classroom observations, and interviews. The findings indicated a steady improvement across cycles. The class mean score increased from 52.72 in the pre-cycle to 71.13 in Cycle I and reached 82.5 in Cycle II. By the end of Cycle II, all students met the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), compared to only six students at baseline. Qualitative observations revealed that while initial use of Wordwall generated interest, uneven participation and low confidence persisted. Adjustments in Cycle II—particularly the incorporation of repetition and structured pair discussions—helped address these issues, resulting in more balanced participation and greater learner confidence. The study concludes that Wordwall can support vocabulary mastery when combined with pedagogical strategies such as recycling input and collaborative learning. These results provide practical guidance for EYL teachers in Indonesia, highlighting how gamified tools can be effectively adapted to classroom realities through iterative, reflective practice.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the form, function, meaning, and religious educational values of the Baris Jojor Dance performance during the piodalan ceremony at Pura Bale Agung, Desa Pakraman Sekardadi, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a religious approach oriented toward phenomenological, theological, and socio-humanistic understanding. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The findings reveal that the Baris Jojor Dance is a sacred performance (seni wali) traditionally presented in the Dewa Yajña ritual, performed by eight male dancers carrying long spears as symbols of warrior virtues. The functions of Baris Jojor encompass religious dimensions as sacred offerings, social functions as community solidarity, educational roles in character formation, and cultural significance as a medium of heritage transmission. Its meanings reflect the triumph of dharma over adharma, cosmic harmony, and spiritual communication between humans and the divine. The religious educational values embedded include tattwa (philosophy), susila (ethics), and upakara (ritual practice), along with cultural inheritance for younger generations. Thus, the Baris Jojor Dance contributes significantly to strengthening spirituality, morality, and cultural identity within Balinese Hindu society.

Abstract

This article explores the representation of Tri Hita Karana values in Roald Dahl’s The Witches. By focusing on the Pawongan values as the framework for building good relationships with other people, the present study follows the interactive qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana in conducting the simultaneous process of the data classification, data display, and conclusion drawing immediately after data collection to ensure trustworthy results. The analysis revealed that the novel includes curiosity, courage, intelligence, loving, and responsibility as the values that could build good relationships with other people, as guided by the Pawongan values in the Tri Hita Karana local wisdom. These findings imply that although Roald Dahl's novel The Witches is written in English by a British author and set in England and Norway, the novel poses a strong relevance for readers with a Balinese background, opening an opportunity to introduce local wisdom through world literature.

Abstract

This study concentrated on examining the attributes, subjects, and activity choices for multimodal listening and speaking materials for EFL pre-service teachers. This research and development study used a four-step process: design, develop, review, and revise, based on the Dick and Carey System Approach Model. This study found that when designing multimodal listening and speaking materials, it is needed to think about how they fit with the goals of the study, how to encourage active learning and participation, how to make them flexible and adaptable, how to use technology, how to be culturally competent and inclusive, how to make the language clear, how to arrange and design the materials, and how to get feedback and make improvements. The procedure of developing the material includes gathering the parts, creating the content, getting expert opinions, and editing the content. The focus was on grammar problems, photo selection, formatting, and storing the material. The research shows that multimodal materials function as ecosystems that integrate theory, practice, and cultural responsiveness to facilitate the growth of pre-service teachers. Longitudinal studies should be conducted in future research to see how the materials affect how well students learn and how engaged they are in different classroom settings.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed the characteristics, learning preferences, and educational expectations of contemporary learners. This study aims to examine the implications of the emergence of the TikTok Generation for English language education and to explore the necessity of rethinking learning models for modern students. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study systematically reviewed scholarly literature on digital learning, social media-based education, TikTok-mediated learning, microlearning, and English language teaching. Data were collected from peer-reviewed journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and academic reports published between 2018 and 2025 and analyzed using qualitative content analysis and thematic synthesis. The findings reveal that contemporary learners demonstrate high levels of digital literacy, preference for visual and interactive content, demand for personalized learning experiences, and engagement in collaborative online learning environments. Traditional English language learning models characterized by teacher-centered instruction, textbook dependence, and limited technology integration are increasingly inadequate in addressing these characteristics. The study further identifies TikTok as a catalyst for educational innovation through its support for microlearning, authentic communication, learner-generated content, and collaborative learning practices. The study concludes that English language education should adopt more learner-centered, technology-enhanced, flexible, and interactive learning models to remain relevant in the digital era. Such transformation can contribute to the development of communicative competence, creativity, critical thinking, and digital literacy among modern learners.

Abstract

Moral degradation influences the unstable relationship between humans. Maintaining a harmonious relationship among fellow humans is essential to avoid more serious problems. Therefore, the study aims to explore and present the Pawongan values in the eighth-grade junior high school textbook entitled English for Nusantara to recognize how the textbook involves character education development. The subject of the study was the content provided in the textbook, which means it is a content analysis research. The study utilised qualitative research procedures proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). Data collection and analysis are conducted repeatedly and simultaneously through data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion drawing and verification. It was discovered that the Pawongan value is present in the home, school, and society. Pawongan values across those contexts internalize positive character development for students to be more respectful, sympathetic, empathetic, tolerant, solid, and equal. Therefore, the study shows that the concept of Pawongan in Tri Hita Karana contributes to character development through a local wisdom approach.
