Abstract

The main problem in the solid waste sector in Medan City is the large number of illegal dumping. This study is to obtain an overview of the waste management that has been carried out so far, to inventory the problems of waste management system, to design a waste management model, and to provide recommendations for waste management system. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the SSK instrument, it was known that the diagram of the waste sanitation system in Medan City had 6 categories. There were 18 villages in Medan City at very high risk category, 7 villages in the high-risk category, 51 villages at moderate risk category, and 75 villages at low risk category. Waste zoning in Medan City consists of 4 zones. Based on SWOT analysis which determine the objectives, targets and strategies for developing solid waste management in Medan City was in the fourth quadrant, it was a defensive strategy. The position of internal and external factors in the solid waste sub-sector in this quadrant showed that weaknesses and threats were more dominant than strengths and opportunities.

Abstract

Abstract

Palm oil mill boiler ash is a solid industrial waste available in large quantities, but its utilization is still limited. This waste has alkaline properties and nutrient content that has the potential to improve the physical-chemical properties of tropical acid soils, such as pH, cation exchange capacity, and macronutrient availability, making it a potential sustainable soil ameliorant. This study aims to process organic fertilizer, namely an organomineral product based on boiler ash, with the aim of evaluating its chemical characteristics and assessing its potential application as a soil ameliorant. The analysis results show that Puler has a pH value of 9 and a nutrient composition that can improve soil quality without heavy metal concentrations above the Indonesian national standard threshold. These findings indicate that Puler can be an efficient alternative ameliorant and supports the utilization of palm oil industry waste. In addition, this puler also meets the criteria for organic fertilizer standards according to SNI 7763:2024

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the institutions, functions, and efficiency of marketing of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) of oil palm by independent smallholders in Dolok Merawan Village, Dolok Merawan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. The study was conducted in 2026 using quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The sample consisted of 33 independent smallholders selected using the simple random sampling method , while the marketing institutions were determined using the snowball sampling technique. The analysis was carried out through the identification of marketing channels, marketing functions, marketing margins, farmer's share , and the ratio of profit to marketing costs. The results showed that there were two marketing channels, namely Channel I (Farmers–Wholesalers/RAM–PKS) used by 12.12% of farmers and Channel II (Farmers–Collectors–Wholesalers/RAM–PKS) used by 87.88% of farmers. The marketing institutions involved included collectors and wholesalers (RAM) who carry out exchange, physical, and facility functions. Channel I has a lower marketing margin (Rp350/kg) compared to Channel II (Rp615/kg), and a higher farmer's share , at 89.55% compared to 81.64%. The profit-to-market cost ratio in Channel I reaches 288.89%, while in Channel II it is 65.63% for collectors and 288.89% for wholesalers. Thus, Channel I is a more efficient marketing channel because it provides a larger share of the price to farmers.

Abstract

Members of the Tani Mandiri Farmers’ Group (Gapoktan) in LautTador Subdistrict, Batu Bara Regency, have received training and mentoring to maintain their Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification; however, several internal audit findings still indicate gaps in the implementation of best practices in the field. This study aims to examine the relationship between training and mentoring and farmers’ compliance scores with RSPO-based best practices in oil palm plantations, both individually and in combination. The research design was an explanatory survey of 79 farmers selected using proportionate stratified random sampling from among 377 certified members across five farmer groups. Data were collected via a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and then analyzed using multiple linear regression. The initial model yielded the equation Y = 4.545 + 0.936X1 + 0.270X2, with training (Beta = 0.573) and mentoring (Beta = 0.241) both showing positive and significant relationships with compliance scores (p < 0.01), and explaining 47.7% of the variance (F = 34.641; p < 0.001). Since the classical Glejser test indicated heteroscedasticity, these coefficients still need to be further confirmed using robust standard errors. These preliminary findings suggest that strengthening technical training and providing more regular on-site mentoring have the potential to support consistent compliance, although the cross-sectional design of this study cannot yet establish a causal relationship.
