Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to conduct a systematic needs analysis of elementary school students and teachers as a basis for designing augmented reality (AR) based geometry learning media integrated with Kraton culture.Methodology: This descriptive qualitative study involved 22 fourth and fifth grade students and two teachers at SD Negeri 2 Pandean. Data were collected through a questionnaire, semi-structured teacher interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was used, and descriptive statistics were applied to closed items. Results: Students have trouble visualizing how nets relate to solid figures with static images. They need AR features such as manipulable 3D models that can be rotated and explored. Animations that unfold and refold solid figures, along with clear highlights of faces, edges, and vertices, aid comprehension. Step by step guidance, interactive short quizzes with instant feedback, and examples connecting geometry to Kraton architecture are also needed. Teachers see potential in AR media if it offers a dedicated teacher mode, explicit usage guidelines, concise lesson segments, compatibility with mid-range devices, offline access, and a curriculum aligned balance between cultural and standard content.Applications/Originality/Value: This study provides context-sensitive and practical design guidelines for developing AR geometry learning media that address students’ spatial visualization difficulties, align with curriculum demands, and are feasible for elementary school contexts with limited technological infrastructure.

Abstract

Fraction sense in the negative domain is important for prospective teachers; however, many epistemological obstacles persist. Research on these obstacles among prospective teachers remains limited. This study aims to identify and describe epistemological obstacles encountered by prospective teachers when employing the sense of negative fractions, as determined by the APOS mental mechanism. The present study used a mix method. The instruments used to obtain quantitative data were a test, while qualitative data were obtained from documentation, interview guidelines, and field notes. Interview subjects were selected based on the type of epistemological obstacles exhibited. The results indicate five epistemological obstacles encountered by prospective teachers when solving problems necessitating the sense of negative fractions. These obstacles encompass the tendency to generalize, false intuitive judgment, and obstacles related to type 1 and type 2 language representation, as well as trial-and-error strategy. The results also reveal obstacles that differ from those documented in the existing literature, namely obstacles in language representation (types 1 and 2) and obstacles in the utilization of trial-and-error strategies. These findings show that prospective teachers encountered five types of epistemological obstacles respected to negative fraction sense problem. While the limited sample size may constrain the generalizability of the findings, a larger cohort could yield divergent results. Future research is recommended to employ gamified digital media to mitigate epistemological obstacles regarding the sense of negative fractions.

Abstract

Critical thinking remains a major challenge in junior high school mathematics learning, particularly in solving non routine problems that require reasoning and justification. Although Olympiad type (OSN) problems have strong potential to cultivate higher order thinking, their integration into regular classroom materials is still limited. This study aimed to develop Olympiad oriented (OSN) mathematics worksheets (LKPD) to address the limited availability of learning materials that foster junior high school students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in exponent topics, which are conceptually challenging and frequently tested in mathematics competitions. The Research used a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). The worksheets were designed to scaffold and strengthen critical thinking through five indicators: interpretation, mathematization, analysis, explanation, and evaluation. The field implementation involved 29 eighth grade students at MTsS YIC Sudirman in the 2025/2026 academic year. Product quality was examined through expert validation and user responses (teacher and students), while effectiveness was evaluated using a pretest–posttest design and indicator level performance analysis. The results showed that the developed worksheets were valid, practical and effective for classroom use. Students’ achievement increased from a pretest mean of 14.77 (SD = 2.69) to a posttest mean of 23.28 (SD = 3.18). Improvements were found across all critical thinking indicators, with the most notable gains in interpretation and mathematization, followed by analysis. However, explanation and especially evaluation still required further reinforcement. Therefore, future instructional design should incorporate more tasks that explicitly require students to justify their reasoning, critique alternative solutions, and reflect on the validity of their answers to strengthen these higher order thinking components. Overall, the OSN oriented worksheets are valid, practical and effective improve students’ critical thinking skills in junior high school mathematics learning.
