Abstract

This article examines the deconstruction of gender stereotypes in Nancy Ajram's song “Yā Banāt” through the combined lens of critical discourse analysis and gender performativity theory. It explores how the song challenges entrenched stereotypes of Arab women by integrating cultural and religious symbolism with elements of cultural hybridity that bridge Arab tradition and global modernity. The research analyzes the song’s lyrics, the visual language of its music video, and audience responses on social media to reveal how “Yā Banāt”  articulates an active, joyful, and emancipatory identity for young Arab women. The study situates this work within the broader context of Arab feminist and popular culture discourses, addressing the gap in Arab music scholarship that often overlooks popular music as a site of gender negotiation. By incorporating theoretical frameworks from Islamic and Arab feminism as well as postcolonial studies, the findings highlight how popular music can function as a culturally resonant tool for social change, fostering new narratives of femininity that are both locally grounded and globally informed. This contributes to expanding feminist theory within the realm of popular culture in the Arab world.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of thematic index card media in teaching Arabic, analyze the challenges encountered in its application, and measure the extent to which students’ vocabulary mastery improves through this strategy. It is also expected that this research will contribute theoretically to the development of vocabulary teaching models based on constructivist theory, as well as provide practical benefits for teachers and educational institutions in improving the quality of Arabic language instruction at the elementary school level. The research method employed is Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles comprising the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research population consisted of 37 fifth-grade students at Al-Ikhlas Islamic Elementary School in the 2025/2026 academic year. Three instruments were used for data collection, namely tests, observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate a notable improvement in students’ performance across the three stages. In the preliminary cycle, the average score was 73.2 with a mastery level of 45.95% (17 out of 37 students). This increased in the first cycle to an average score of 79.2 with a mastery level of 78.38% (29 out of 37 students). In the second cycle, the average score reached 84.7 with a mastery level of 89.19% (33 out of 37 students). Thus, it is evident that the use of thematic index card media has proven effective in improving vocabulary mastery, increasing student participation, and developing students’ ability to use vocabulary within correct Arabic sentence structures.

Abstract

Arabic speaking skills are among the essential abilities that second-language learners must master. However, most students find it difficult to speak Arabic due to limited vocabulary and lack of speaking practice in class. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of the modified Engklek game as a learning medium in improving students’ kalam ikhbari skills in Arabic learning. This study employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method. The research subjects were students from Classes VIII A and VIII B at Al-Fatih 1 Islamic Integrated Junior High School, each consisting of 32 students. Data were collected through oral tests using a pretest and posttest model. The game modification for speaking skills was carried out by incorporating Arabic learning elements into the game system, such as thematic vocabulary and sentence structure patterns. Furthermore, students’ roles were designed to be not only active participants but also direct language users in communicative and enjoyable situations. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s speaking ability, with an average pretest score of 33 and a posttest score of 65, while the control group experienced only a slight increase from 35 to 40. The improvement in the experimental group’s speaking skills fell into the moderate category, with a percentage increase of 47%. Thus, the use of the modified Engklek game proved effective in enhancing students’ speaking skills in Arabic learning.
