Abstract

A check dam is a construction solution to overcome various catchment area challenges, especially erosion and sedimentation control in the upstream region. The strategic implementation of this plan includes various methodologies such as topographic, geotechnical identification, hydrological analysis, sedimentation analysis, material specification, hydraulic analysis, stability analysis, storage capacity analysis, and budget plan development. The purpose of this research is to check dam planning using waste tires which includes sediment discharge, detailed dimensions of the building, and building safety, to the required cost budget plan by reviewing the aspects of environmentally friendly, low cost, and waste utilization by sustainable development goals. The type of sediment flow that occurs is debris flow with a sediment discharge rate of 25,939 m3/s, due to the flood discharge phenomenon with a significant 25-year return period is 10,580 m3/s. The safety number of the proposed check dam design using the calculation of forces acting and Plaxis 2D V20 software has exceeded the safety permit requirements with various conditions that may occur at the study site. In a single flood, this check dam can effectively mitigate for approximately 4 days. To implement this development plan, an estimated budget of IDR773.472.940 has been projected.

Abstract

Abstract

Limited irrigation water availability constrains irrigation management and reduces agricultural profitability. This study aims to maximize agricultural profit by optimizing irrigation water distribution using a deterministic dynamic programming model in the Ameroro Irrigation Area, Konawe Regency, Indonesia. The model was structured with planting seasons as stages, irrigation water availability as the state variable, and water allocation as the decision variable. The objective function maximized total profit based on cultivated land area under a rice–rice–secondary crops cropping pattern across a total irrigated area of 2,100 ha. Model constraints included dependable discharge, seasonal water availability, crop water requirements, and land area limitations. In the existing condition, agricultural profit reached IDR 37.4 billion in planting season I, IDR 37.4 billion in planting season II, and IDR 8.6 billion in planting season III, totaling IDR 83.4 billion annually. After optimization, profits increased to IDR 42.03 billion, IDR 44.07 billion, and IDR 12.90 billion, respectively, resulting in a total annual profit of IDR 99.00 billion. The results indicate that deterministic dynamic programming improves water allocation efficiency and increases agricultural profit without additional water resources, supporting sustainable irrigation management.

Abstract

Abstract

The Melawi Dry Dam is a zoned embankment dam with clay core located in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. As a flood-control structure, it undergoes significant wet–dry cycles that modify stress distribution and pore water pressure, potentially influencing plastic deformation within the core zone. This study aims to evaluate the effects of clay core thickness and permeability coefficient on vertical plastic deformation using a combination of fully coupled flow–deformation and plastic analysis in PLAXIS 2D. Numerical simulations represent a post-flood condition followed by a 130-day consecutive dry season period, defined as Julian days when rainfall remains at the lower rainfall-gradient threshold, during which the reservoir remains empty because inflow exceeds outlet capacity. Nine scenarios were analyzed by combining three core thicknesses (11.64, 19.40, and 27.16 m) with three laboratory-determined permeability coefficients. The results indicate that seven scenarios remain below the maximum allowable deformation limit of 1.0% of the dam height. Statistical analysis shows a strong correlation between core thickness, permeability, and deformation (R = 0.929). Multiple linear regression (Significance F = 0.00253; p < 0.05) confirms that both variables significantly affect deformation. Increasing core thickness consistently reduces plastic deformation, while lower permeability enhances resistance to seepage-induced instability, thereby supporting safe dry dam design.

Abstract

Water is fundamental to cooking, bathing and hygiene, and essentially for life itself. Across many areas, communities rely on bore well water as a source of raw water for domestic needs. Yet this resulting water is mostly not of an appropriate quality, as it has a high iron content and hardness. This study evaluates the performance of a combined vertical-flow and horizontal flow roughing filter (VRF and HRF) system for bore well water treatment. The system was tested using various alternative filter media, including coconut fiber, silica sand, activated carbon, zeolite, pumice stone, and volcanic black sand, arranged in different configurations. The vertical-flow unit used a media depth of 6 cm, while the horizontal-flow unit used a depth of 15 cm. The results showed that all configurations effectively improved water quality and met standard requirements. The highest performing model, consisting of volcanic black sand, activated carbon, zeolite, and silica sand, achieved a 97.5% reduction in iron and a 13.2% reduction in hardness. These findings indicate that optimized roughing filter systems offer a low cost and efficient solution for decentralized water treatment.
