Abstract

AbstractThe condition of the many shellfish wastes in Tanjung Balai City in North Sumatra Province makes a concern to the "Karya Working Group" as a part of Prosperous Family Income Improvement Business Group (an initiative from Indonesia™s National Family Planning board to improve family welfares; abbreviated as UPPKS) led by Mrs. Khalijah. The productivity of the Karya working group can be optimized considering that there are quite a lot of orders that have not been able to be fulfilled by them. Some of the obstacles in the management of this seashell handicraft business include the manual rinsing of seashells resulting in a long waiting time for further processing of production with the use of the same workforce; order-based marketing and relatively limited product innovation. In some aspects, similar shell craft products produced by competitors, especially in Java, have relatively better quality considering the products in question have been produced to scale exports to foreign countries. This mentoring activity in the management of product business managed by UPPKS Karya consisted of the use of technology for clamshell cleaning, assistance in utilizing e-marketing through social media and a more varied range of products that have contributed to increased effectiveness and efficiency in the production and marketing of handicraft products from clamshell waste produced by the Work UPPKS. In the future, UPPKS Karya's technological literacy is expected to continue to be able to increase its creativity through the exploration of product designs inspired by cyberspace for improving the competitiveness of products produced. Keywords: Shell Waste, Souvenir Crafts, E-Marketing, Tanjung Balai.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate teaching materials in the form of printed books and e-books for the Ornamen Nusantara course, focusing on the ornamental design of the Hulu Keris Melayu Tumbuk Lada. The development process employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The results indicate that the teaching materials are valid (78,75%), practical (82,15%), and effective (88,53%). Their use has been shown to enhance students’ understanding of traditional ornamental richness; particularly the Melayu Tumbuk Lada ornament; and to encourage the preservation of local cultural values. More broadly, the findings contribute to strengthening cultural identity in art education and support the development of creative industries based on cultural heritage.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to develop assessment-focused teaching materials for dual-dimensional visual works in the form of valid, practical, and effective p-books and e-books for the Department of Fine Arts. Employing the R&D method with the 4D model (define, design, develop, and disseminate), the research used a Likert scale questionnaire as the instrument, with data analysis techniques covering validity, practicality, and effectiveness assessments. The study results indicated that the teaching materials, both p-books and e-books, were highly valid with an average score of 87.8%. Furthermore, these materials proved to be highly practical for students in Shape Drawing, Illustration Drawing, Visual Communication Design (DKV), Graphic Arts, and Sketching courses, with a practicality score of 84.16%. They were also deemed effective, as students’ activities (such as reading modules, asking and answering questions, and completing assignments) resulted in an effectiveness score of 85.41%. Thus, the teaching materials are confirmed to be valid, practical, and effective for application in the specified Fine Arts courses.

Abstract

This study aims to develop mobile-book teaching materials for the Nusantara Ornaments course, focusing on Toba Batak Gorga as an effort to transform the digital learning ecosystem in higher education. The research employs a research and development (R&D) method using the 4-D model—Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Data were collected through observations, interviews, document analysis, and questionnaires, and were analyzed using a developmental research approach. Product trials were conducted with Fine Arts students at Universitas Negeri Medan (small group, n = 120) and students at Universitas Negeri Padang, Universitas Negeri Semarang, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar (large group, n = 240). Expert validation covered four domains: cultural heritage content, learning media, visual communication design, and language (Indonesian and Toba Batak). In the Define stage, the needs analysis emphasized integrating the philosophy of Gorga with contemporary digital design techniques. The Design stage produced responsive prototypes featuring high-resolution visuals and structured learning flows, while the Develop stage incorporated interactive features to support hybrid learning. Validation results showed an overall average score of 75.85% (“Good” category), consisting of 75.86% from cultural heritage expert I, 73.79% from cultural heritage expert II, 79.14% from the design expert, and 74.61% from the linguist. These findings confirm that the developed mobile book aligns with the 4-D development procedures and meets the criteria of an innovative learning medium that provides flexible access, supports both in-class and out-of-class learning, and promotes cultural preservation by transforming the knowledge of Toba Batak Gorga into accessible digital resources. The dissemination plan includes implementation guidelines for lecturers and a mechanism for continuous improvement informed by cross-cultural learning analytics across universities in Indonesia.
