Abstract

Plasmodium species, as the causative agent of malaria, are a significant concern in livestock production. This study aims to investigate the presence of malaria parasites in small ruminants comprised of goats and sheep. Plasmodium infections in ungulates do not cause malaria in humans. However, they might have anopheline mosquitoes as the same vector of this parasite. This study uses molecular techniques, nested PCR, to detect Plasmodium infections in small ruminants, as traditional microscopic examination may lead to misdiagnosis. The results show that Plasmodium infections were found in goat samples from Sumba Barat Daya, Nusa Tenggara Timur, with a prevalence of 7.41% based on nested PCR assay. Notably, Plasmodium was not detected through microscopic examination, underscoring the sensitivity of molecular techniques. It should be noted that none of the goats tested positive for malaria based on microscopic examination, suggesting extremely low parasitemia levels. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding Plasmodium infections in small ruminants, shedding light on their impact on animal health and their potential role in local transmission patterns. The sample size in this study is limited. Further research with larger samples and expanded geographical scope is recommended to comprehensively understand Plasmodium prevalence in small ruminants.

Abstract

Background: Jambi Province consists of 11 regencies and cities, which have a quite high potential for cattle breeding because the availability of natural feed for livestock is still very abundant. Jambi province has high rainfall and humidity. High rainfall and humidity cause the growth of helminth eggs, which can infect the digestive tract of cows. Helminths infestation in the digestive tract can cause damage to the intestinal mucosa, which can reduce the efficiency of absorption of food, causing a loss in cattle productivity in body weight, milk production, and meat quality. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the incidence of helminthiasis and the types of worms that infect livestock in the work area UPTD Laboratory of Animal and Veterinary Public Health Jambi Province. Methods: A total of 2.720 feces were screened for parasite digestive tract in this study using floating and sedimentation methods. Results: It was found that the highest prevalence in 2020 occurred in Bungo Regency, which was 4.47%, while the lowest was in Sarolangun Regency, which was 0%. In 2021, the highest prevalence was in Jambi City, which was 7%, while the lowest was in Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, which was 0.28%. The highest prevalence in 2022 will be in Jambi City, which is 6.19%, while the lowest will be in Sungai Full City, which is 0.52%. The type of helminth that infected cattle in 2020-2022 is Paramphistomum sp., with as many as 87, 48, and 205 cases, with the highest incidence in Bungo Regency, namely 23 cases, while Jambi City, namely, 21 and 51 cases. Conclusion: The highest incidence of helminthiasis in Jambi City, with the highest identified type of helminth egg, was Paramphistomum sp.

Abstract

Background: Sumba is one of the original habitats of the Sandalwood Ponies and the presence of pony is an important element for the community. The Sumbanese herd their ponies in the savanna and rely on nature as a source of horse feed, consequently, during the dry season, the availability of the feed decreases. These conditions can potentially reduce the health status of ponies and increase morbidity or mortality from diseases caused by Trypanosoma evansi. Purpose: This study aims to determine the occurrence and intensity of Trypanosoma evansi infection in blood samples from horses examined at the Denpasar Bali Veterinary Centre. Methods: Thirty blood samples were collected from East Sumba Regency. Three milliliters of blood were taken from the jugular vein and immediately transferred into an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tube. Thin blood smears were subsequently prepared and examined using the Giemsa-stained blood smears method. The preparations of blood smear were examined under microscope to determine the Trypanosoma evansi infection and the intensity was calculated on the average number of Trypanosoma evansi in 100 red blood cells. Results: The result showed that six out of 30 horses were tested positive for Trypanosoma evansi. The infection intensity ranged from two to 18 parasites with an average number of 8 in the blood smear examination method. Conclusion: The incidence of trypanosomiasis in Sumba horses varies with each season in East Sumba Regency. The prophylactic measures that should be adopted in the particular herd of horses because this is the most significant blood protozoan parasite of equines.

Abstract

Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) known as Gumboro is a high frequently found virus that has an acute trait. It occurs on broiler chickens and easily transmitted among them especially during the maintenance period. The targets of this virus are the cell in the bursa of fabricius and various lymphoid organs. Therefore, the IBD virus infection causes interference to the immune system. Moreover, the observation of clinical symptoms showed that in the Arjasari 2 stall found the changes in clinical symptoms on broiler chickens. It covers weakness and lethargy, decreased appetite, hanging wings, whitish watery diarrhea, and dirty cloaca. Besides, during the maintenance period found a high mortality rate. Based on the results of a necropsy, several organs have changed in broiler chickens aged 17-33 days. Changes in the bursa of fabricius experiencing organ hemorrhage air sacs that become inflamed (airsacculitis), and hemorrhages on the heart, thus space indicating an IBD. Results from the study showed that the field methods for diagnosis with a view of the clinical symptoms, the mortality rate, and a necropsy can be used as a method for the field diagnosis of IBD. Changes in the post mortem organ can be used as reinforcement to the clinical diagnosis of IBD, especially changes or damage to the bursa of fabricius.

Abstract

Fascioliasis, also known as hepatic distomatosis or fasciolosis, is a zoonotic infection caused by the trematodes of Fasciola. The usual reservoir for this parasitic disease is herbivorous mammals, including humans, sheep, goats, and cattle. However, humans can contract this zoonosis infection by ingesting metacercaria, a juvenile trematode stage, which adheres to aquatic vegetation. Fascioliasis is typically present asymptomatically. However, human fascioliasis may have symptoms such as eosinophilia, abdominal discomfort, and various corroborative findings covering multiple diagnostic modalities. These diagnostic options include parasitological fecal examination, which observes the parasite in the feces; radiological imaging techniques, which envision the anatomical abnormalities created by the invasion; and serological studies, which could detect the immune response system to the infestation of the parasite. This review article aims to characterize fascioliasis in terms of zoonotic occurrence, outline the available diagnostic modalities, and highlight the specific significance of radiological imaging. This may contribute to the timely and adequate identification of the condition. This review article may contribute to forming the professional dialogue concerning fascioliasis, including its epidemiology, clinical presentation, and differential diagnostics
