Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks have weakened the economy, including the goat farming subsector. The decrease in demand for goats in the livestock market is the most dominant impact. Presently, farmers are no longer thinking about profits but how to maintain their farms. Transferring knowledge about alternative feed by utilizing local resources and processing organic fertilizer from goat manure is one strategy to reduce maintenance costs and increase the selling value of goat manure with the optimism of becoming an additional source of income for farmer groups. The development of alternative feed using the silage method and goat manure processing is carried out with simple fermentation-based processing. Community service has been carried out with a counseling method accompanied by interactive discussions followed by self-practice with assistance. Evaluation of community service activities has been carried out by looking at and assessing the physical standard parameters of the products produced by farmers, consisting of the quality of silage and organic fertilizer. The results of this community service, member farmers from the KUBE Sejahtera X Binangun 005 farmer group were able to understand and successfully improve their skills in making alternative feed based on local resources using the silage method and making organic fertilizer with the main ingredient of goat manure.

Abstract

Goats are the leading livestock commodity in the Samigaluh sub-district. The goat population in the Samigaluh sub-district was 15,866 goats (16.7%) of the total goat population in Kulon Progo which reached 95,257 goats. Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goats are widely kept and bred because of their high quality and price value, some are crossbred with local goats called Bligon. Limited access and quality bucks are one of the obstacles in breeding and improving the quality of goats, the use of artificial insemination (AI) in goat breeding has a low success rate. This community service (PkM) aims to educate and foster awareness and the active role of farmers in maintaining and improving the quality of goats from the reproduction side. The PkM partner is the KUBE Sejahtera X Binangun 005 livestock group which is a productive community group within the scope of the UGM assisted village in Sidoharjo village. Transfer of knowledge and skills has been carried out using counseling methods, interactive discussions, and practice in selecting superior males and applying the Buck Rotation System to maintain and improve the quality of goats phenotypically and genotypically. Evaluation of PkM by taking the parameters of knowledge and skills of farmers in assessing and selecting superior bucks and recording reproduction by implementing the Buck Rotation System. Results achieved, the training participants of the KUBE Sejahtera X Binangun 005 farmer group understand the importance of reproductive health, reproductive recording, and the impact of inbreeding and can judge and select bucks by SNI 7352:2008.

Abstract

Haemonchus contortus is the most pathogenic blood-sucking gastrointestinal nematode worm found in the abomasum of small ruminants, especially in goats and sheep. Haemonchus contortus has been identified as a significant problem in ruminants because it causes economic losses. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of areca nut seed infusion (IBP) on the mortality rate of Haemoncus contortus. This study was divided into 9 groups, each group containing 10 Haemoncus contortus worms. Group I was treated with IBP 2.5%; group II was treated with IBP 5%; group III was treated with IBP 7.5%; group IV was treated with IBP 10%; group V was treated with IBP 12.5%; group VI was treated with IBP 15%; group VII was treated with IBP 17.5%, group VIII as a negative control (0.9% NaCl) and group IX as a positive control (Albendazole). Mortality of Haemonchus contortus was recorded every hour until the mortality of the worms was 100%. Data analysis with ANOVA, to determine the differences in the effects of different treatments, analysis of variance and significant differences (P <0.01) were carried out, followed by further testing by the Duncan method (Duncan Multiple Range Test). The results of this study indicate that IBP significantly affects the mortality rate of Haemonchus contortus at various concentrations. In this study, the best concentration to kill 100% Haemonchus contortus for 4 hours was IBP concentrations of 12.5% 15% and 17.5%
