Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis, a gram-positive bacterium typically found on the skin, can cause infections, particularly in individuals with implanted medical devices. Due to its ability to resist standard antibiotics and create biofilms, finding new antibacterial solutions is crucial. Betel leaves (Piper betle) are recognized for containing active components like flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols, and essential oils, suggesting they could act as natural antibacterial agents. This research sought to assess how well green betel leaf extract inhibits S. epidermidis growth in a controlled laboratory setting. The research involved a laboratory-based experiment utilizing a completely randomized design. The disc diffusion method on Nutrient Agar media was employed to test three extract concentrations (40, 60, and 80 mg/disk), using erythromycin as a positive control and DMSO as a negative control. Each treatment was repeated four times. The diameter of the inhibition zones was measured following a 24-hour incubation period at 37°C. The Shapiro–Wilk normality test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD test were used to analyze the data collected. The findings revealed that the concentrations of 60 and 80 mg/disk exhibited substantial antibacterial effects, producing an average inhibition zone of 14.25 mm, which was significantly different from the negative control (p < 0.05). In conclusion, green betel leaf extract is effective at suppressing the growth of S. epidermidis and shows promise as a source for developing a natural antibacterial treatment.

Abstract

Albuminuria is a condition in which there is albumin in the urine, albuminuria often occurs in patients with type 2 DM which occurs due to persistently elevated blood sugar levels and poor glycemic control. This will risk the occurrence of complications of them diabetic nephropathy but it takes about 5-10 years after the diagnosis of DM is established to become a significant problem of kidney damage. The purpose of this study was to find out how the description of albuminuria levels in patients with type 2 DM based on the duration of diagnosis at RSUP NTB. The method used was analytic observation with a cross sectional design. The results of this study analyzed 30 subjects, consisting of 14 men (47%) and 16 women (53%) with an age range of 30-71 years, with the prevalence of urine albumin levels based on the duration of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is ≤ 5 years. DM ≥ 5 years with a prevalence of 3 (10%) samples having normoalbuminuria levels, 18 (60%) samples having micro albuminuria levels, and 3 (10%) samples having macro albuminuria levels

Abstract

Fasting is a form of religious practice that not only provides spiritual benefits but also has positive effects on human health. From a medical perspective, fasting plays an important role in improving metabolic function, enhancing the immune system, and helping prevent various degenerative diseases. This community service activity was conducted in Rumak Timur Selatan Hamlet, Rumak Village, Kediri District, West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, with the aim of increasing public knowledge regarding the health benefits of fasting. The activities were carried out through health education sessions, healthy lifestyle counseling, and interactive discussions with the community. The results showed that the community demonstrated high enthusiasm and gained new understanding regarding the benefits of fasting for digestive health, blood sugar control, cardiovascular health, and improvement of the body’s immune system. This activity is expected to increase public awareness in adopting healthy lifestyles while observing fasting practices.

Abstract

Chronic kidney failure is a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, and kidney function is routinely evaluated using creatinine, urea, and urinary protein tests. However, because creatinine and urea testing requires automated laboratory equipment that is often unavailable in primary healthcare facilities, urinary protein testing remains the most accessible screening method for the early detection of kidney function impairment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate creatinine levels, urea levels, and urine protein in patients with Diabetes Mellitus as predictors of kidney failure. This study is a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. The independent variables are creatinine levels, urea levels, and urine protein, while the dependent variable is blood glucose levels. The study sample consisted of 30 individuals using accidental sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using secondary data. The data were analyzed descriptively and with the Pearson chi-square test. The research results showed that 47% of respondents had high creatinine levels, 83% had high urea levels, and 80% had positive urine protein results, including positive levels 1, 2, and 3. The Pearson chi-square test results indicated that all three variables creatinine, urea, and urine protein had a significant relationship with p-values less than 0.05, specifically creatinine at 0.045, urea at 0.037, and urine protein at 0.032. The conclusion that can be drawn from these results is that the examination of creatinine levels, urea levels, and urine protein can serve as predictors of kidney failure in patients with diabetes mellitus. In particular, urine protein levels can be a simple test used to detect kidney conditions in diabetes mellitus patients and can be performed at community health centers.
