Abstract

Exercise has a positive impact on a person's health and fitness level. However, the benefits could be obtained if the exercise is conducted properly by avoiding the risk involved. One of the risks during exercise, especially for those in urban communities, is the difficulty in avoiding air pollution. Air pollution, especially particles with a size less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), can be inhaled into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. The amount of air pollution inhaled will increase in the people doing exercise because the rate of breathing increases along with the increasing intensity and duration of the exercise. This may impact the blood pressure response due to the presence of foreign particles in the bloodstream. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a post-test-only comparison group approach. The research was conducted in Karawang Regency, West Java, Indonesia, and included two sites, a higher PM2.5 Concentration site, and a lower PM2.5 Concentration site. The research subjects included 22 undergraduate students with a healthy status divided into two research groups. Each group performed exercise, including 5 minutes of warm-up and 15 minutes of running at submaximal intensity (80–85% of HR Max) at 07.00 for five days consecutively. Blood pressure response measurements were taken immediately after exercise. This study aimed to determine the effect of regular exercise in high and low air pollution conditions (PM2.5) on the blood pressure response. The study found that regular exercise for five days in an environment with high air pollution resulted in higher systolic and diastolic arterial pressures than a regular exercise in low air pollution conditions. Thus, performing exercise in high PM2.5 air pollution conditions affects the blood pressure response. For this reason, vulnerable groups should pay attention to air pollution levels when doing exercise.

Abstract

Performing exercise or physical activities for a long duration under the exposure of air pollution becomes an unhealthy combination and will increase the risks of the individual inhaling more pollutant. Studies that examine an individual performing physical activities regularly in two public sport centers with different levels of air pollution have not been extensively documented, therefore the purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of regular exercise on aerobic capacity, force vital capacity (FVC), and hematological profile among individuals in an environment with similar climatic characteristics but different concentrations of air pollution. This trial composed 15 males (age range from 16 to 18) from Bandung City, Indonesia. Two public sport centers with similar climatic conditions (temperature, and humidity), but different concentrations of air pollutants are selected. Participants performed exercises three times a week for three consecutive weeks at each research site, with a two-week break. Participants’ aerobic capacity, respiratory capacity, and blood sample are measured before and after they exercised at each site. The measured parameters in both sites are compared and analyzed. Aerobic capacity, FVC, and RBC after participants exrcised in the area with lower air pollution show higher value than exercised in the area with higher air pollution. Manwhile WBC is shown to be high after participants exercised in the area with higher air pollution. This happened because air pollution has effect to human physiological characteristics. This research shows that exercising at sport center with high air pollution had negative effect on hematology profile and could affect the development of aerobic and respiratory capacities. The limitations in this study are the unknown intensity when doing regular physical exercise so that in future studies it is recommended to determine whether the intensity will affect the variables in the research subject.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Metro City's Sports Development Index (SDI). This research employed the quantitative approach. 270 individuals from three sub-districts were included in the cluster sampling sample.interviews, questionnaires, and the Multistage Fitness Test were the instruments used. The study's findings were as follows the metro city's SDI was 0.379, which falls into the low category of the SDI norm. This indicates that the Metro city's sports development is still lagging behind or very little is happening. Three SDI indicators are still low: the availability of sports-related human resources, community exercise participation, and physical fitness of people who are still in the low category so that the Metro city receives more attention. The lowest level of sports personnel is only 0.00104 available.
