Abstract

Research has shown that EFL learners often face challenges with deictic expressions, leading to communication errors. The author wanted to examine whether similar problems exist among sixth-semester English Education students at Nusa Nipa University by analyzing the types and dominant deixis in classroom interactions. Applying Levinson's (1983) theory, this research uses Creswell's (2009) method for in-depth analysis. Data were collected through audio recordings and field notes during eight class meetings, then transcribed and coded for thematic analysis. Miles & Huberman's (1994) technique and Walizer's (1990) formula were used to measure the types of deixis and the dominant deixis used. This analysis reveals that five types of deixis are used: person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. A total of 979 deixis were identified, with person deixis being the most dominant with 70.48%, accounting for 690 occurrences. “We” was used 194 times, reflecting the collaborative nature of group work, while ‘you’ appeared 132 times, indicating direct engagement with the audience. The findings highlight the role of deixis in shaping academic communication and interaction, emphasizing its importance in effective classrooms.

Abstract

This study conducts a sociolinguistic analysis of the speech styles exhibited during the interview between Ellen DeGeneres and three-year-old Brielle on The Ellen Show. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research examines the dynamics of spoken language within a popular media context, focusing on how age and social context influence communication styles. The analysis identifies five distinct speech styles based on Joos's (1967) classification: formal, casual, consultative, intimate, and frozen. The findings reveal that Ellen employs a blend of formal and casual styles when introducing Brielle, transitioning to a more relaxed and engaging tone as the conversation progresses. Brielle's responses reflect a casual style that fosters relatability while showcasing her knowledge of complex subjects like the periodic table. The consultative style emerges during educational exchanges, where both speakers engage in informative dialogue. Additionally, intimate moments are highlighted through interactions with Brielle's mother, emphasizing familial closeness. This study contributes to the understanding of how speech styles adapt in response to varying social contexts and age differences, illustrating the intricate relationship between language and interpersonal dynamics in televised interviews. The results underscore the effectiveness of Ellen's communicative approach in creating an inviting atmosphere that resonates with a diverse audience, ultimately enhancing viewer engagement and understanding of complex topics through accessible dialogue

Abstract

This study explores syntactic variations in bilingual code-switching, focusing on Englishmixed structures. Code-switching, the shift between two languages within a single conversation or discourse, frequently occurs in multilingual settings and can be influenced by various linguistic and social factors. The aim of this research is to analyze patterns and syntactic structures in sentences containing a mixture of English and another language, revealing how simultaneous use of two languages creates unique sentence structures. Using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, the study involved 10 bilingual respondents who actively use English alongside their native language in daily conversations. The interview data were analyzed thematically to identify common patterns in syntactic code-switching, such as word order, pronoun usage, and phrase structure differences. Findings indicate that code-switching occurs not only at the lexical level but also at the syntactic level, with significant variations in sentence structures influenced by grammatical differences between English and the native language. The study reveals that factors like conversational context, social setting, and language proficiency level also influence syntactic forms in code-switching. The implications of this study provide new insights into how grammatical rules from two different languages can interact and adapt, enriching our understanding of language adaptability among bilingual speakers. These findings contribute to applied linguistics and can be applied in language education as well as cross-cultural communication studies.

Abstract

This research examines the metaphorical language in JKT48's Mahagita album to explore how figurative expressions convey deeper emotions and themes within the lyrics. By applying Lakoff and Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study classifies metaphors from selected songs into three types: structural, ontological, and orientational, each contributing to themes such as love, hope, struggle, and personal development. This qualitative descriptive analysis focuses on the lyrics of eleven songs to uncover how these metaphors enhance listeners' emotional engagement and comprehension. Findings indicate that ontological metaphors represent the largest segment, accounting for 47.5%, illustrating abstract feelings through tangible comparisons, such as “Hidup bagaikan pesawat kertas” (Life is like a paper airplane), which highlights the unpredictability and fragility of life. Through metaphor, the lyrics of JKT48 establish a profound emotional connection that resonates with listeners, demonstrating the effective application of figurative language in music to convey intricate emotions and concepts.
