Abstract

Inorganic waste, particularly plastic generated from school canteens and learning activities, remains a significant environmental challenge due to its non-biodegradability, which contributes to soil, water, and air pollution. Addressing this issue, this community service program aimed to enhance students' environmental awareness and practical skills in managing plastic waste by producing ecobricks, which were repurposed as eco-friendly plant pots to improve the school's aesthetic and ecological quality. Mercu Buana University implemented the program in collaboration with the Rawakalong Village Government to support SMKN 1 Gunung Sindur in achieving Exemplary Adiwiyata School status. The initiative combined participatory training sessions, hands-on Fs, and continuous mentoring, emphasizing the application of the 4R principles in the school environment. The results indicated a marked increase in students' engagement, knowledge, and skills in waste management, along with a measurable reduction in plastic waste volume. Ecobricks were successfully integrated into school greening activities, serving as both functional plant pots and tangible educational tools that reinforced sustainable behaviors. The program also contributed to the fulfillment of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) 3 and 7 and promoted experiential, community-based learning aligned with the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka initiative. This study demonstrates that ecobrick-based interventions can transform environmental challenges into educational opportunities, fostering sustainable practices and participatory learning among students. Moreover, the program highlights the potential to scale ecobrick initiatives across broader school and community contexts, supporting environmental stewardship and institutional commitment to sustainability. These findings provide practical and theoretical insights into integrating hands-on waste management strategies into school-based ecological education programs.

Abstract

Munggang Wetan Hamlet, Sidoharjo Village, Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo, is in the Menoreh Highhills region, which has great goat farming potential. The KUBE Sejahtera X Binangun 005 farm group has been using goat manure as organic fertilizer; however, they continue to encounter challenges due to its rough texture and basic packaging. This community service activity aims to improve the quality of organic fertilizer products by applying Compost Maturation Technology and using a compost grinder to produce fine, crumbly organic fertilizer. The activity was conducted using a participatory approach that included outreach, training, technology application, and evaluation. The results of this community service activity showed a significant improvement in the physical quality of organic fertilizer that meets SNI standards, with characteristics such as a crumbly texture, blackish-brown color, a humus-like odor, and a temperature of 30–35°C, making it suitable for agricultural use. Additionally, the innovative packaging design has the potential to enhance the sales value of the partner group's organic fertilizer products. This activity not only supports local economic potential but also reinforces the principles of sustainable agriculture by utilizing livestock manure as a productive resource. This program is expected to become a model for rural community empowerment through appropriate, environmentally friendly technology.

Abstract

Domestic violence among Indonesians, especially in Bangka Belitung, is a serious concern. The lack of legal literacy regarding the impacts and factors of domestic violence is one of the causes of the continued prevalence of domestic violence. Therefore, the community service team aims to encourage the elimination of domestic violence in the Tebing Village area, Kelapa District, West Bangka Regency, as part of efforts to increase family resilience. This activity was carried out using a participatory, dynamic socialization method and case study analysis. The participatory approach in this activity aims to encourage the community to be more open to recognizing and reporting acts of violence. The activity was carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The results of this service are increased public knowledge about the types of domestic violence and the criminal threats under Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence, as well as increased awareness that domestic violence is not only a personal matter, but a social problem and a form of legal violation with broad impacts.

Abstract

Food hygiene and sanitation play a crucial role in ensuring food quality and safety, particularly within the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) sector. According to data from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM, 2022), 72 outbreaks of food poisoning were reported in Indonesia, a 44% increase from the previous year. The majority of these cases were caused by catering services (31.94%) and street food (23.61%), highlighting the urgent need for proper hygiene and sanitation practices among food handlers. This community service activity was conducted at a food-processing MSME in Ambulu Village, Losari Sub-district, Cirebon Regency, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of using a flip chart as an educational medium to improve workers' knowledge regarding food production hygiene and sanitation. The method involved an initial interview-based knowledge assessment, educational sessions using flip charts, and a follow-up interview using the same set of questions. The subjects were two MSME employees. Results showed an improvement in the average knowledge score from 60 to 90, with a total increase of 30 points. The use of flip charts proved effective in delivering information visually, interactively, and comprehensively, making it easier for participants to understand the concepts presented. This approach demonstrates that flip-chart-based education can be an effective strategy to enhance food hygiene and sanitation practices among MSMEs, particularly in rural areas.

Abstract

Data shows that 30.52% of older people in Padang experience tooth loss, yet only 1.53% use dentures. This condition can disrupt nutritional intake and diminish the quality of life, thereby increasing the risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition, in turn, can exacerbate the physical and mental health status of older people. A community service program was conducted involving 30 elderly participants at the Posyandu Permata Bunda in Gunung Sarik Village, Padang. The intervention comprised socialization and education on the impacts of tooth loss and the importance of dentures, oral cavity examinations, nutritional status assessment using the Mini Nutritional Assessment, and quality-of-life assessment using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The participants were followed from the initial activities through the denture fabrication process. Elderly individuals with poor nutritional status tended to have a poorer quality of life. A significant improvement in quality of life was observed following denture use: the proportion of participants in the "good" category increased from 20% to 60%, while the proportion in the "poor" category decreased from 40% to 10%. A significant difference in GOHAI scores (p<0.05) was found before and after the intervention. The implementation of socialization, education, and denture installation at the posyandu effectively improved the elderly participants' quality of life. This integrated intervention can serve as a model for comprehensively addressing elderly health issues at posyandu, including providing ongoing support after denture use. These activities should be conducted periodically, with nutritional status assessments every three months and continuous monthly support for denture use.

Abstract

According to research by a digital marketing research institution, the number of smartphone users in Indonesia has increased significantly each year. In 2016, the number of users stood at 65.2 million people and continued to rise, reaching 92 million people in 2019. However, this dramatic increase has not been accompanied by education on smartphone use, leading to various cases of cellphone misuse among students. The service team recognized the need for training on effective mobile phone use, particularly in schools. SMP Negeri 7 Kota Jambi (State Junior High School 7 of Jambi City) was selected as the service location based on the availability of supporting facilities, especially adequate internet infrastructure. This community service took place on August 5, 2020, using lecture, discussion, demonstration, and hands-on practice simulation methods, attended by 40 teachers from various subject areas. Initial survey results showed that only 2 out of 40 teachers knew about the learning applications Kahoot, Mentimeter, and Quizizz, but had never implemented them in teaching. The final evaluation results showed that 100% of teachers understood how to use interactive smartphone-based learning applications, and 90% expressed interest in integrating them into their teaching.
