Abstract

Purpose-Scientific reasoning is an essential ability in learning science, including physics. This study aims to assess the scientific reasoning abilities of high school students in Palangka Raya City, focusing on six indicators: conservation reasoning, proportional reasoning, variable control, probabilistic reasoning, correlation reasoning, and hypothetical-deductive reasoning.Methodology-To achieve the goals, descriptive research consisted of 187 samples from six schools in two districts using the multistage stratified random sampling method. The instrument used in this study is Lawson's Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning (LCTSR), containing twelve multiple-choice items. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test to determine the differences in average scores between schools, and descriptive statistics were used to describe students' general scientific reasoning skills. The analysis results show a p-value of 0.001, indicating that the test detected a statistically significant difference in the average score of scientific reasoning ability among high school students in the sample schools in Palangka Raya City.Findings-The descriptive analysis results showed that the conservation reasoning indicator had the highest percentage of correctness, while hypothetical-deductive reasoning was the least mastered by students. Additionally, most students are in the concrete operational thinking phase, despite having theoretically reached the formal operational phase in terms of cognitive development.Contribution-This finding has implications for educators in designing physics learning strategies that encourage the development of students' scientific reasoning as they progress toward the formal operational phase.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to analyze the relationship between reading literacy and numeracy on elementary school students' ability to solve word problems.Methodology – This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and data analysis techniques in the form of multiple linear regression. The research population consists of elementary school students, with a sample of 102 students randomly selected from several classes. The research instruments include three types of tests: reading literacy, numeracy, and word problem-solving. The normality test is conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to ensure normal data distribution, followed by the Pearson correlation test to determine the strength of the relationship between variables, and the regression analysis to determine the simultaneous correlation of the two independent variables with the dependent variable.Findings – The research results show a significant relationship between reading literacy and the ability to solve word problems (r = 0.896) and between numeracy and the ability to solve word problems (r = 0.902). Regression analysis shows that both independent variables explain 87.4% of the variation in students' ability to solve word problems. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening reading and numeracy literacy in an integrated manner in contextual mathematics learning. This indicates that students' success in solving word problems relies not only on arithmetic skills but also on their understanding of the content of the reading.Contribution – This study recommends developing an integrated learning model combining language literacy and numeracy aspects to comprehensively enhance students' problem-solving skills at the elementary school level. This research contributes to developing integrated learning strategies that incorporate reading literacy and numeracy skills to improve students' problem-solving competencies in elementary schools.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to identify the learning obstacles experienced by senior high school students in studying green chemistry.Methodology – This study used a qualitative descriptive design with a learning obstacle analysis approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with students at a senior high school in Indonesia. The interview guideline covered several themes, including student learning experiences, conceptual understanding, learning methods, and the obstacles that students faced in applying green chemistry to everyday life. The collected data was then analyzed and categorized to identify any obstacles encountered.Findings – The results indicate that students' primary obstacles are epistemological, including limited prior knowledge, a superficial understanding of Green Chemistry principles, and difficulties in applying these concepts to real-life contexts. Students rarely experience project-based learning and mainly rely on rote learning and repeated explanations from teachers, which do not fully resolve their conceptual gaps.Contribution – This study highlights the use of lesson design that provides more interactive and contextual learning, helping students connect chemistry learning in green chemistry with everyday practices. This research also provides insights for teachers in designing effective learning by anticipating students' learning obstacles, thereby supporting the realization of sustainable chemistry education.

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to analyze the effect of madrasah principals' managerial accountability, pedagogical competence, and spiritual competence on teacher performance at the State Madrasah Aliyah (MAN) in Banten, Indonesia. The study counteracts the paradox of continual low performance among teachers in Islamic schools despite implementing several reform efforts.Methodology- A sample of 163 MAN teachers (a purposive sampling) was used for the quantitative inferential study. Information was gathered through questionnaires, structured observations, interviews, and documentation. At the same time, there were validated and reliable instruments for every variable: management accountability (X₁), pedagogic competence (X₂), spiritual competence (X₃), and teacher performance Y). Statistical analyses included classical assumption tests, partial correlations, multiple regression, and ANOVA.Findings- Results of this study show that all the independent variables have a significant and positive influence on teachers' performance, where 78.2% combined contribution. The latent variable of pedagogical competency had the most significant partial effect on work environment (β = 0.452), followed by spirituality competence (β = 0.390) and managerial accountability (β = 0.125). These findings demonstrate the significance of pedagogical competencies in professional practice and confirm the vital importance of moral leadership and internalized spiritual foundations.Contribution- Our study is of empirical significance as it decontextualizes spiritual competence from a religious virtue for personal development and considers spirituality not only to be among the teacher's individual traits, but also a measurable expertise essential to good practice in Islamic education. This study contributes to the literature by examining the link between management accountability and teacher performance at the classroom level, which has not often been examined in previous research.
