Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence is a crucial period in the life cycle that requires special attention to nutrition and health. Adolescents in Islamic boarding schools are vulnerable to nutritional problems due to limited access to information and unbalanced eating habits. Objective: The purpose of this service was to increase adolescents’ awareness and knowledge regarding nutritional status and the importance of balanced nutrition through nutritional assessment and consultation. Method: The community service program was carried out at KHAS Kempek Islamic Boarding School with participants aged 13–18 years. The method included nutritional status assessment through weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference measurements. Afterward, participants received individual nutrition counseling for 10–15 minutes focusing on balanced diet education. The activity was supported with educational media such as leaflets, food models, and questionnaires. Evaluation was conducted using pre–post tests and feedback to measure improvements in knowledge and awareness among adolescents. Result: The results indicated that most adolescents had a normal nutritional status. Nutrition consultations also contributed to increased awareness and knowledge about healthy and balanced eating. Conclusion: This activity demonstrated that educational and participatory approaches can support health promotion efforts among adolescents in boarding school settings.

Abstract

Introduction: Anemia remains a significant health problem in Indonesia, particularly among adolescents. Based on the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), the prevalence of anemia among adolescents aged 15-24 years reached 15.5%, with slightly higher rates for females at 18% and 14.4% for males. Objective: To increase public awareness, understanding, and positive behavioral changes regarding the importance of nutrition in early anemia prevention. Objective: To increase public awareness, understanding, and positive behavioral changes regarding the importance of nutrition in early anemia prevention. Method: The Community Service activity, part of the Village Children's Work Festival, was attended by 30 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Educational materials focused on the importance of nutrient consumption to prevent anemia, with an emphasis on iron and vitamin C intake, as well as foods that inhibit or support iron absorption. A 7-minute animated educational video on nutrition to prevent anemia was projected using a projector and delivered with simple, engaging narration tailored to the characteristics of adolescents. Following the video, an interactive question-and-answer session and group discussion were held to strengthen participants' understanding. Result: Based on the results of measuring adolescents' understanding before and after being given nutrition education through animated video media, data obtained showed that the average pre-test score for understanding anemia prevention was 52.83 with a standard deviation of 8.57. After the intervention in the form of showing educational animated videos and discussion sessions, the average post-test score increased to 74.17 with a standard deviation of 6.95. Statistical analysis using paired sample t-test showed a p-value = 0.000, which means there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (p < 0.05). These results indicate that animated video-based nutrition education effectively increased participants' understanding of anemia prevention efforts. Conclusion: Animated video media is an effective educational method and can be used as a nutritional health promotion strategy among adolescents, especially in anemia prevention efforts.

Abstract

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the most significant global public health challenge, significantly impacting both developed and developing countries. The results of the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) indicate that NCDs such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension remain a major issue in Indonesia and Central Java Province.  Early detection of NCD risks through blood sugar, blood pressure, uric acid, and cholesterol level tests plays a crucial role in preventing and managing these chronic conditions. Objective: This community service activity aims to support NCD prevention efforts at the local level, particularly in Central Java, by involving the community in early detection programmes and promoting healthy behaviours. Method: This community service activity was carried out in June 2025 in Geneng Village, Demak, using a participatory method involving active community engagement. The program consisted of planning, health examinations, health education, and follow-up. A total of 51 participants from the productive and elderly age groups underwent health checks including blood pressure, blood glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol using standardized tools. The results were recorded, interpreted according to the Ministry of Health categories, and delivered to participants along with education on healthy lifestyles, such as dietary modifications, physical activity, and routine health monitoring. Data were analyzed descriptively and the results were also submitted to the local Public Health Center as input for non-communicable disease prevention programs. Result: The screening showed that 57.7% of respondents had high blood pressure, 13.04% had high blood sugar, 53.5% had high cholesterol, and 13.9% had high uric acid. These four types of screening can serve as important indicators and play a strategic role in the early detection of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), enabling health interventions to be implemented in a timely and appropriate manner to prevent further complications. Respondents were then provided with an explanation of their screening results, including an interpretation of the health check results and recommendations for a healthy lifestyle. Conclusion: The conclusion from this community service activity is that some respondents still have hypertension, abnormal blood sugar levels, high uric acid, and high cholesterol.
