Abstract

This study presents a problem statement by exploring the application of the Sad Kerthi concept in the development of a marine tourism area in Karangasem Regency, Bali, with a focus on blue economy principles. The Sad Kerthi, deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu local wisdom, emphasizes the preservation of six sacred elements: Atma (soul), Segara (ocean), Danu (lake), Wana (forest), Jagat (earth), and Jana (human). The challenge lies in applying the blue economy approach to optimize the sustainable and wise utilization of marine resources while maintaining ecosystem balance and enhancing local community welfare. By aligning with Blue Economy principles, which advocate for the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, the study underscores the potential of integrating traditional wisdom with modern economic models. The research indicates a methodology that utilizes a qualitative approach, conducting in-depth interviews with experts from governmental and cultural sectors, as well as academic and research programs that incorporate these values of local wisdom. The main findings indicate that local wisdom and the blue economy are interdependent, mutually strengthening each other in the quest for sustainable development. Local wisdom serves as a cornerstone for sustainable practices, cultural values, and community involvement, which can significantly enhance the effectiveness of the Blue Economy framework. The main conclusions of this research contribute to the discussion on sustainable tourism by illustrating the effectiveness of a culturally rooted approach to achieving both environmental and economic sustainability.

Abstract

Tourism is currently in the spotlight because the massive use of natural resources is rumored to damage the order of life in the future. Various efforts are made for tourism business actors to maintain sustainability so that this nature remains sustainable. Information on sustainability activities is very important to be known by all parties to legitimize the implementation of sustainability. This research provides information on the implementation of sustainability practices in tourist villages with the main objective of designing a financial transaction model based on green accounting practices that have not been widely practiced in a tourist destination in the village. A qualitative approach was used to dig deeper into the data from five informants of tourist village managers who have implemented sustainability. The results of the study explain that transactions related to the environment are recorded, recognition of costs incurred, measurement, recording to accounts, then presented and detailed disclosure of environmental costs. In addition, it was found that environmental prevention costs, environmental detection costs and internal failure costs in strengthening sustainable tourism. The results of the study contribute to accounting science in revealing an environmental cost aimed at supporting sustainable tourism. This condition is a new way of maintaining sustainability oriented on financial transactions. This research can be developed quantitatively in strengthening the green accounting model associated with sustainable tourism.

Abstract

The urgency of this research arises from the diminishing reputation of Bali tourism, attributed to the viral dissemination of peculiar tourist behaviors via social media and other platforms. If this persists, it may adversely affect Bali's tourism circumstances. The research aims were: 1) to detect and analyze alterations in individuals' attitudes resulting from exposure to negative tourism information, and 2) to develop a model linking negative tourism information exposure to changes in the attitudes of the Balinese people, with the fatigue component serving as a mediating variable. This study employed a quantitative methodology, utilizing data analysis approaches that included quantitative descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS). The study's findings indicate that 1) the populace remains in the "euphoria" phase, characterized by a continued acceptance of tourists, and 2) the variable of fatigue effectively mediates the impact of negative tourism information on public attitudes, exhibiting partial mediation

Abstract

This study explores the evolving dynamics of Indonesia’s rural tourism workforce, emphasizing its role in regional development and the challenges it faces. As rural tourism grows, driven by unique cultural and natural assets, it creates employment but also exposes workforce limitations, including low digital literacy, seasonal jobs, and skill gaps. The study aims to understand how demographic factors such as age, gender, education, and skills shape the workforce and influence its adaptability. Using a qualitative descriptive approach supported by secondary data analysis, this paper examines trends in workforce composition and the impact of digital transformation on rural employment. Findings indicate a growing demand for digital competencies, yet rural areas often lack training access and strategic workforce development. Challenges like job insecurity and limited career pathways further hinder sustainable growth. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions through human resource development, emphasizing collaboration between government, educational institutions, and industry. It concludes by recommending strategic training programs, strengthened academia-industry partnerships, and policy support to ensure workforce resilience and competitiveness. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable tourism by offering insights into workforce readiness, serving as a roadmap for strengthening Indonesia’s rural tourism sector.

Abstract

Employee engagement among Generation Z in tourism businesses is essential as they enter the workforce. This study examines how information technology utilization, organizational culture, and servant leadership influence employee engagement among Generation Z in Jakarta's tourism sector. It also explores the mediating role of servant leadership in these relationships. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 200 respondents through purposive sampling. Analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4 software. The results indicate that information technology utilization, organizational culture, and servant leadership positively impact employee engagement. Additionally, servant leadership mediates the relationship between information technology utilization, organizational culture, and employee engagement. This study contributes to employee engagement theory by emphasizing the psychological conditions necessary for full engagement. It also underscores servant leadership's role in fostering psychological safety through support, empowerment, and ethical guidance. From a practical perspective, the findings highlight the need for tourism businesses to leverage technology, build a strong organizational culture, and adopt servant leadership practices that align with Generation Z’s expectations to enhance engagement.

Abstract

This research analyzes the transformation of the digital nomad ecosystem in Bali as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in February 2022. Using a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design, this research reveals how the conflict has triggered a wave of Russian migration to Bali, which increased from around 1,800 people in the pre-pandemic period to more than 58,000 people in 2022. This phenomenon has created “Russian enclaves” especially in the Canggu and Uluwatu areas, triggering significant transformations in demographic, economic, regulatory and socio-cultural aspects. The results show a restructuring of the local economy, characterized by a 35-40% increase in property prices during 2022-2023, a proliferation of Russian-oriented businesses, and a shift in the local tourism value chain. Regulatory challenges are a crucial issue, especially regarding visa compliance and digital nomad work activities that fall in the regulatory “gray zone”. Socio-cultural dynamics show a complex spectrum of interactions, from social segregation to forms of cultural adaptation and acculturation. Local Balinese communities demonstrate significant adaptive capacity through the involvement of adat institutions in property regulation and cultural preservation initiatives. This research contributes to the theoretical discourse on “crisis-driven lifestyle migration” and “creative resilience” of local communities in response to global transformation. The implications of the research highlight the importance of integrated policies to manage the digital nomad phenomenon, ensure equitable distribution of economic benefits, and preserve local cultural values amidst the dynamics of global mobility.

Abstract

The rapid growth of Bali’s tourism industry—long admired as a tropical paradise—has created a sustainability paradox: while boosting economic development, it has simultaneously strained ecological resources and undermined cultural heritage. Existing Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) frameworks often overlook local values that are essential for sustainable practices in culturally embedded and crisis-sensitive island contexts. This study investigates how culturally grounded GHRM and Green Transformational Leadership (GTL), framed by the indigenous Tri Hita Karana philosophy, influence Employee Green Behaviour (EGB) and Environmental Performance (EP) in Bali’s tourism sector. Using a quantitative approach with data from 385 tourism employees, the model was tested through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (SmartPLS 4.0). Results indicate that GHRM and GTL significantly affect both EGB and EP, with EGB serving as a partial mediator in both relationships. Cultural alignment significantly amplifies green behaviours and environmental performance. The study introduces a novel, culturally embedded GHRM framework that integrates leadership, HRM, and sustainability within the socio-spiritual context of Balinese tourism. Theoretically, it expands the application of green HRM by integrating indigenous philosophy; practically, it offers a scalable model for tourism-based economies seeking to harmonize economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability. While the cross-sectional, single-region design limits broader generalizability, this research provides a foundation for future comparative studies across culturally rich destinations.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to obtain empirical evidence about the influence of leadership and motivation on the performance of employees of a four-star hotel in the Rooms Division Department in the north of Bandung. The findings are expected to help the company and practitioners develop human resources management.  The study was conducted at Hotel X, Hotel Y, dan Hotel Z. It used a quantitative research approach with a survey method, and the type of research was Descriptive Research and Explanatory Research, with a time horizon in the form of cross-sectional data that shows a picture of a situation at a specific time. The study's hypothesis was tested with the statistical method of path analysis. Path analysis is a statistical tool used to test the study's hypothesis.  According to research test results, there is a considerable correlation between employee performance and leadership and motivation, either fully or partially.

Abstract

Literature indicates that many studies are exploring organisational performance with an emphasis on both transformational and transactional leadership styles; unfortunately, this study finds that there are few empirical studies explaining the performance of SMEs, especially tourism SMEs from developing countries, with a focus on transactional leadership style and AI. In doing so, as a research novelty of this study, it is important to investigate the moderating effect of AI on the relationship between transactional leadership style and the performance of SMEs in emerging countries. Drawing on a sample of 192 tourism small and medium-sized enterprises from an emerging country, which is Indonesia, this study applies a quantitative research approach with a purposive sampling technique and analyses the research data through a structural equation modelling approach. The findings of this study reveal that transactional leadership positively and significantly influences organisational performance, with artificial intelligence serving as a positive and significant moderator. Specifically, the presence of artificial intelligence technologies enhances the effectiveness of transactional leadership by facilitating decision-making processes and improving operational efficiency. This study identifies that the extent of artificial intelligence integration is a moderating factor, recommending that organisations must strategically adopt artificial intelligence technologies to maximise leadership effectiveness. This research is also expected to contribute theoretically and managerially to the literature on leadership, organisational study, and technology by emphasising the critical moderating role of artificial intelligence in increasing organisational outcomes, offering practical implications for leaders aiming to leverage technology for improved performance.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the compliance of star-rated hotels in South Sulawesi with health protocols as a form of sustainable behavior that contributes to sustainable tourism. Using a quantitative survey method, the research focuses on four dimensions: Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability. Data was collected from hotel management, staff, and guests to capture a comprehensive perspective on protocol implementation. The findings indicate a high level of compliance overall, reflecting strong support for sustainable tourism practices. However, areas related to cleanliness and environmental sustainability need improvement. Therefore, hotels should continuously strengthen these aspects to ensure health-related practices are fully integrated into long-term tourism development.
