Abstract

The phenomenon of distance learning patterns during the pandemic has become an extraordinary leap and has significantly impacted the massive use of the internet in society. The digital era is an era where many human life activities are carried out online by minimizing social interaction, such as school with online learning, working in the office to working from home, organizational meetings via online meeting platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet, health consultations answered directly by doctors, as well as other activities that were rarely carried out before Covid-19. This research aims to determine children's learning patterns and behavior in the metaverse era. Meanwhile, the research method used is quantitative, with several approaches such as correlation between variables and the close relationship between one variable and another. The three groups of respondents in the study were early adults (>20 years), early adolescents (15-20) years and children (10-15 years). The research results show that at the age of children, smartphone use and online activities are only limited to playing games and social media. Meanwhile, in their early teens, some are even starting to learn game-making through online platforms such as Roblox Studio. In early adulthood, which is the age of college education, smartphone use is not just about social media or online shopping; some even have digital wallets and crypto wallets, invest in cryptocurrency, and even actively use the creator's platform games and NFTs with payments via cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, polygon, etc.

Abstract

The ongoing conflict between the central Thai government and the predominantly Muslim provinces of Southern Thailand, particularly Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, has significantly impacted various sectors, including education. The ethnic and religious divisions inherent in this conflict have posed challenges to implementing educational policies. This study explores how local elite politics influence the integration of Islamic education and the national curriculum in these conflict-prone areas. A qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis to gather data from key stakeholders, including school leaders, policymakers, and educators. The findings reveal that despite efforts to incorporate religious and secular curricula, local educational systems face persistent challenges in maintaining balance amidst the broader socio-political tensions. This study also highlights the role of local elite politics in shaping educational policies, particularly in the context of religious and cultural identity. It underscores the need for more flexible and culturally inclusive educational policies that not only meet national standards but also respect the unique cultural and religious needs of the Muslim community in Southern Thailand. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on the intersection of local politics, education, and conflict in a qualitative context, offering new insights into how education can be leveraged as a tool for peacebuilding and social cohesion in conflict-affected regions.

Abstract

Improving students' academic achievement in Indonesian language studies at madrasas requires effective writing evaluations. This study explores how Islamic behavior and self-esteem attribution among Indonesian language teachers at Madrasas influence their approach to creating writing assessments using a phenomenological method. Through in-depth interviews with twenty teachers, the thematic analysis revealed that teachers' Islamic values provide a religious framework that shapes their understanding and application of assessment development. Teachers' evaluations incorporate moral and religious principles, reflecting on their self-worth and the intrinsic value of students' written work. Islamic behavior and the attribution of self-esteem enhance teachers' commitment to fair, reflective assessments, which ultimately support students' literacy and academic growth. The study suggests that embedding Islamic behavior and self-esteem attribution in writing assessments strengthens teacher development and student success in Indonesian language studies. Future studies could further explore the role of these factors in teacher preparation and assessment practices in Indonesian madrasas.

Abstract

In the context of preventing radicalism, it is important to research educational institutions that have implemented multicultural Islamic education. This article explains how deradicalization is pursued through Multicultural Islamic Education at Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to understand the role of Islamic religious education in shaping students' multicultural attitudes. Data were collected through observations, interviews with 15 alumni from three cohorts, and documentation, focusing on the integration of multiculturalism concepts in the course materials. The findings indicate that the Multicultural PAI doctoral program at UNISMA significantly contributes to preventing radicalism by promoting tolerance and inclusive religious education. The program encompasses both theological and socio-cultural aspects, which help transform students' mindsets to become more open and reinforce the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and Pancasila within the framework of Islamic education. The curriculum serves as a deradicalization tool by deepening the understanding of diversity and encouraging positive interactions within and between religious communities. However, its effectiveness is influenced by students' subjective factors, such as their attitudes, and external factors like the sociopolitical context. Further research is needed to assess the program's long-term impact and refine the curriculum based on student feedback.

Abstract

Transformative Islamic education focuses on teaching religious values and shaping critical awareness and social responsibility, including in the political context. This study analyzes transformative Islamic education in political education carried out by Islamic religious figures during the 2024 General Election in North Sulawesi. The research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. The sample selection employs purposive sampling, involving 23 informants of Islamic religious figures and Muslim communities from 12 districts/cities in North Sulawesi. Data is collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document studies. The data are analyzed thematically, which includes stages of organizing data, reading the entire data set, coding, identifying key themes, and interpreting the data within the framework of transformative Islamic education theory in the political context. Triangulation is used to ensure the validity of the data. The study’s results indicate that transformative Islamic political education by religious figures successfully increased active and responsible political participation and shaped critical political awareness among the Muslim community in North Sulawesi. In addition, the study also found that the Muslim community in North Sulawesi is increasingly aware of the boundaries between religion as a moral guide in politics and religion as a political tool that can be exploited for specific interests. This study has some limitations, such as being limited to the North Sulawesi region, only studying Islamic religious figures, and focusing on the 2024 General Election, which does not yet represent political education outside the election context. Therefore, further research is recommended to expand the regional scope, conduct interfaith studies, and analyze political education by religious figures in a broader socio-political context.

Abstract

This study focuses on the evaluation of the planning of 9-year compulsory basic education in East Lombok Regency, with the main objective of assessing the effectiveness of planning oriented to minimum service standards (MSS). This education planning is considered important in addressing the gap in access to education and improving the quality of basic education at the regional level. The research hypothesis is that the proper implementation of MSS in basic education planning can significantly improve access and quality of education and reduce illiteracy rates in the region. This research method combines qualitative and quantitative approaches through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, involving stakeholders such as education officials, school principals, and community leaders. This study found that the planning structure and products have included an in-depth analysis and appropriate budget allocation, but budget challenges and community support are aspects that need to be improved. The discussion of the research results emphasizes the importance of involving the community more actively and strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration to optimize the planning and implementation of basic education. Overall, this study makes a significant contribution to understanding the complexity of basic education planning in the region and offers recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of SPM implementation, which can play a role in improving the quality of education and reducing educational disparities in East Lombok Regency.

Abstract

This study investigates the process of internalizing pesantren values in the implementation of Islamic higher education at Universitas Sains Al-Qur'an (UNSIQ) Wonosobo. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that UNSIQ's scientific paradigm is rooted in the values of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah and Pesantren principles, such as the Panca Jiwa Pesantren. This paradigm emphasizes the integration of knowledge and religion, rejects the dichotomy between the worldly and the hereafter, and directs knowledge toward achieving syar'i (Sharia-compliant) goals. The internalization of Pesantren values at UNSIQ includes principles such as al-Amanah (trustworthiness), al-Tawadlu' (humility), al-Istiqamah (steadfastness), al-Uswah al-Hasanah (good role model), al-Tawashshuth (moderation), at-Tasamuh (tolerance), at-Tawazun (balance), simplicity, al-Barakah (blessing), and Tawasul Ilmi (knowledge-seeking). Efforts to internalize these values are carried out through both academic and non-academic activities. As a result, UNSIQ aims to produce graduates who are not only intellectually capable but also possess spiritual resilience and noble character. This study contributes to the development of an Islamic higher education model that integrates pesantren values and aligns with societal needs.

Abstract

Pesantren, Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, have a unique educational framework. Pesantren combines religious and general subjects, including English. However, existing English reading materials are still questionable in meeting the specific needs of pesantren students. This study explores the differing perceptions of English reading materials among students, teachers, and experts at four Islamic boarding schools (Pesantren) in Indonesia. The study used a quantitative research design involving 10th-grade students from four pesantren: Al-Kautsar Al-Akbar Islamic Boarding School (North Sumatra), Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School (Jakarta), Assaadah Pamulang Islamic Boarding School (South Tangerang), and An-Nahdlah Islamic Boarding School (Depok, West Java). Data collection methods included questionnaires for students, teachers, and experts. A one-way ANOVA found significant variations across five evaluation dimensions: content relevance, comprehension support, exercise quality, instructional clarity, and motivational appeal (F = 31.648, p < 0.05). Based on the data from the Bonferroni post hoc analysis, the most positive rating for English reading materials was shown by students, followed by teachers, and the lowest by experts. Each group has a unique and different perspective. The findings of this study indicate that current reading materials are sufficient to meet basic curriculum standards and student interests. Still, based on expert observations, they do not meet the standards for teaching quality. Teachers need to find a bridge between the realities of classroom practice and pedagogical objectives. Therefore, a collaborative approach is required to develop English reading skills that align with curriculum objectives, classroom implementation, and student involvement in Islamic Boarding Schools. Development of inclusive materials, collaboration on revision communication with the government, ongoing teacher training, and integration of student feedback are highly recommended for developing practical and relevant student reading materials in Islamic boarding schools in the context and culture of the Islamic boarding school itself.

Abstract

Issues of social cohesion and interfaith tolerance are crucial in the context of diverse societies, including Bali, Indonesia, and Southern Thailand, which have experienced conflicts related to religious and cultural differences. This study aims to explore the role of multicultural Islamic education in strengthening social cohesion at Bali Bina Insani Islamic School (SI-BBI) and Phatnawitya School (PS). Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, this research employs in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with school principals and teachers at both schools as primary data sources, which are then analyzed using descriptive-qualitative methods. The findings reveal that multicultural Islamic education at SI-BBI is implemented through the integration of local cultural values into the curriculum, such as the use of the Balinese language and the recruitment of Hindu teachers, as a form of acculturation that fosters social cohesion among the Muslim minority and Hindu majority in Bali. Meanwhile, at PS, multicultural Islamic education is applied with the inclusive principle of rahmatan lil alamin, incorporating cross-cultural learning and reinforcing tolerance values for students in the Muslim-majority but locally cultural region of Southern Thailand. These findings expand the understanding of Social Identity Theory from Henri Tajfel and John Turner, by demonstrating that multicultural education can reduce identity conflicts and strengthen social integration through learning that respects diversity. The implications of this research emphasize the need for educational policies that are friendly to religious and cultural diversity, which support the integration of multicultural values in the education system in areas with potential for conflict. The multicultural Islamic education models in these two schools offer strategic frameworks for application in contexts of cultural and religious diversity, aiming to create sustainable social cohesion.
