Abstract

Education dualism cannot be separated from the historical aspects of the colonial era. This policy continues to be debated among academics, particularly with regard to budget policies and the quality of education. This study aims to describe the political implications of education dualism on budget and welfare policies. This research uses a systematic literature review approach comprising four stages: identification, screening, eligibility and conclusions. A total of 626 data items were collected, with 226 items collected from the Scopus database and 226 items from the Google Scholar database. All stages of data collection, screening and reporting were guided by PRISMA. The results showed that the political implications of dualism triggered inequality in the budget and welfare: the budget allocation for religious education was smaller than for general education, which also affected the welfare of educators. Although the government made efforts to equalise, policies between ministries often did not support each other. This research contributes by providing a concrete overview of how the political implications of dualism affect education budget policies and educators' well-being, encouraging the government and stakeholders to implement education system reforms that are more harmonious, efficient and socially just.

Abstract

School violence, including bullying and sexual violence, poses a significant challenge to the well-being and development of students, particularly in Indonesia. Despite the success of anti-bullying programs like KiVa from Finland in reducing such violence, adapting these programs to the Indonesian context, which is deeply influenced by local cultural and religious values, is crucial for their effectiveness. This study proposes integrating key Islamic values 'adl (justice) and ihsan (empathy) into the KiVa program to create a more inclusive and safe educational environment for Indonesian students. The aim is to address not only the behavior of students but also the underlying societal issues, such as patriarchal norms and social hierarchies, that often fuel sexual violence in schools. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), this research analyzes relevant studies published between 2018 and 2024, focusing on the application of Islamic principles in educational contexts. The findings suggest that integrating 'adl and ihsan enhances KiVa’s effectiveness by fostering fairness, justice, and empathy, which are essential for preventing bullying and sexual violence. The integration of these values ensures a more holistic approach, addressing both the emotional and social aspects of the problem. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a culturally relevant framework that can be adapted to Indonesian schools. Additionally, the study provides policy recommendations to promote teacher training, community engagement, and the inclusion of these values in the school curriculum. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this approach in creating safer and more just school environments.

Abstract

This article explores the Islamic educational values embedded in Serat Wedhatama, a classical Javanese literary work authored by Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya (K.G.P.A.A) Mangkunegara, recognized for its profound religious and moral teachings. The study aims to uncover the Islamic values conveyed through the text and assess their relevance to education character in the contemporary era. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a philological approach and content analysis, data were collected through an in-depth literature review of the Serat Wedhatama manuscript and related scholarly works. The findings reveal that the text embodies key Islamic educational values, including tauhid (the oneness of God), akhlak (morality), tasawuf (spiritual purification), and the pursuit of knowledge. These values are articulated through themes of self-awareness as a servant of God, the control of human desires, and the attainment of spiritual happiness. The study highlights that Serat Wedhatama transcends its literary form, functioning as a medium of Islamic moral education deeply rooted in Javanese cultural identity. The integration of its values into modern character education curricula holds significant potential for shaping individuals who are spiritually grounded, intellectually equipped, and morally upright. In conclusion, Serat Wedhatama represents a rich source of local wisdom that continues to offer relevant and transformative insights for Islamic education in the modern educational landscape.

Abstract

The Differentiated learning is a student-centered learning that can serve as an effective strategy to foster intrapersonal intelligence, ultimately contributing to the development of high-quality human resources through education. Teachers, as facilitators, play a pivotal role in understanding and addressing students' diverse learning needs, including the cultivation of intrapersonal intelligence—an essential component in shaping individual character and personal abilities. This study aims to explore the role of teachers in implementing differentiated learning to enhance students’ intrapersonal intelligence. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis within a vocational high school setting. The findings reveal that teachers who are adept at recognizing each student's unique potential and who create adaptive, responsive learning environments significantly contribute to the development of students' self-awareness, emotional regulation, and decision-making abilities. Furthermore, effective differentiated learning strategies have been shown to inspire students to discover and maximize their potential, thereby supporting the development of human resources who are not only intellectually capable but also possess strong intrapersonal competencies. The researchers also served as facilitators in enhancing teacher competencies in the P4 Central Jakarta program for vocational high school educators.

Abstract

This study investigates how well the Problem-Based Inquiry Method (PBIM) improves academic performance, learning motivation, and critical thinking abilities. Innovative techniques are required since traditional education methods frequently fall short in fostering intellectual curiosity and higher-order cognitive skills. Inquiry-based learning and problem-solving are combined in PBIM to encourage active student participation. A control group (n=67) that received traditional instruction was contrasted with an experimental group (n=66) that used PBIM in a quasi-experimental design. Motivation surveys, subject-specific posttests, and standardized critical thinking tests were used to gather data, which were then subjected to t-tests and MANOVA analysis. The experimental group's critical thinking (mean difference = 22.82, p=0.000), academic results (mean difference = 8.69, p=0.000), and motivation (mean difference = 16.12, p=0.000) all showed significant gains, according to the results. The multivariate influence of PBIM was validated by MANOVA (p<0.05). The results support the inclusion of PBIM in educational practices to replace passive learning paradigms by highlighting its effectiveness in promoting cognitive development, academic achievement, and intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study investigates the perspectives of 89 early childhood teachers in Sumatra, Indonesia, regarding environmental literacy. Quantitative data were collected via an online questionnaire distributed through Google Forms, followed by qualitative data gathered through in-depth interviews conducted via Zoom. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data, while a thematic approach was applied to the qualitative findings. Three major themes emerged. First, teachers demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering environmental knowledge through experiential learning. They highlighted the importance of engaging children’s five senses and promoting active, reflective thinking to develop environmentally responsible behaviour that encompasses personal, social, and institutional dimensions. Second, key motivational factors for teaching environmental literacy included early instillation of environmental awareness, the cultivation of sustainable habits, nurturing care and love for nature, preparing environmentally conscious future generations, and supporting sustainability-oriented education initiatives. Third, the effectiveness of environmental literacy education was found to depend on both internal and external factors. Internally, teachers utilised strategies such as outdoor and play-based learning, project-based learning (PJBL), habit formation through place-based education, and digital media integration. Externally, successful implementation relied on collaboration with parents and communities, alongside institutional and governmental support. The study also revealed that teachers draw from ethnocentric, anthropocentric, and ecocentric perspectives when teaching about nature, indicating a strong sense of environmental place attachment. These insights underscore the need for contextually grounded teacher training, flexible curriculum development, and the production of locally relevant educational resources to enhance environmental literacy in early childhood education.

Abstract

The lack of religious education among students can influence their behavior and negatively impact the quality of their Qur’an recitation. Therefore, this study aims to explore the implementation of the Tilawati method in Qur’an learning for students. The research was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Asy'ari Keras Diwek, Jombang, using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The learning process focuses on two primary outcomes: enhancing students' character and improving their Qur’an reading skills. Over time, the madrasa aspires to equip students with essential life skills through Qur’an learning using the Tilawati method, recognizing it as a relevant and effective approach in 21st-century education. The findings reveal that Qur’an instruction using the Tilawati method follows several key stages. It begins with opening activities, such as reciting a prayer before the lesson. This is followed by the core learning activities, which include classical techniques such as the use of teaching aids, and the application of the rost rhythmic style. The session concludes with closing activities involving evaluation and the recitation of kafaratul majlis (closing prayer). The implication of this study underscores the importance of applying appropriate methods for teaching the Qur’an in madrasas to achieve both spiritual and educational development.

Abstract

The mismatch between the grammar used in writing English and the structure of Indonesian was often the leading cause of errors in writing. This article further analyzed the error analysis of writing products made by Indonesian Islamic university students of EFL More specifically, this study attempted to describe the types of grammatical errors in written products, the frequent types of grammatical errors, and the students’ awareness of errors. Two methods, quantitative and qualitative, were applied to accomplish this. Written tests and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Students’ written Production was analyzed for errors based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy Theory proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. The findings of this study revealed that students from Indonesian Islamic universities displayed a range of errors in their written products. The most prevalent errors identified were Misformation errors within the writing products of these EFL students. The errors committed by the students in their written outputs were further substantiated by the results of interviews, indicating that, whether aware or unaware, the students struggled to recognize and self-correct their grammatical errors in their written product. This study has provided significant insights into teaching English in general and specifically in writing instruction. By understanding the types of sentence errors commonly made by students, educators can focus on critical teaching points and effectively monitor their student’s adherence to the lessons delivered.
