Abstract

Coastal and small islands are faced with various significant challenges, one of which is the vulnerability to contamination by waste disposal from land and the magnitude of the impact it has on coastal waters. This study presents a framework for formulating environmental management of small island coastal waters from anthropogenic sources of terrestrial land with a system dynamic approach based on the characteristics of physical environmental factors and oceanography of the waters. The purpose of this research is to formulate a strategy for environmental management of the coastal waters of Tanjungpinang City. The results showed that the total magnitude of the waste load originating from anthropogenic sources on the mainland of Tanjungpinang City was 1,073.98 tons/year. The burden of organic waste in Tanjungpinang City is identified from five sources, namely domestic waste from residential areas, hotel and restaurant waste, the food industry, and the agricultural and livestock sectors. The Tanjungpinang coastal waters environmental management strategy with a dynamic system approach is recommended to use an optimistic scenario, but it needs to be supported by several policies in the form of (1) government support to build a community wastewater treatment facility or communal WWTP, (2) increasing community participation and concern for the aquatic environment , and (3) preparing regional strategic plans, specifically in the field of aquatic environmental management in the context of controlling effluent in coastal waters of small islands.

Abstract

The waters of the Sei Carang estuary are water areas that are influenced by tides and have mangrove vegetation along the waters. However, with the conversion of land functions such as bauxite mining and logging activities, the existing mangrove ecosystem is damaged. The purpose of the study was to determine the ecological characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem and to determine the level of ecological suitability of the mangrove ecosystem as a mangrove rehabilitation area in the Sei Carang estuary waters, Tanjungpinang City. This study used a purposive sampling method at 4 stations selected based on land openness and locations that allow for rehabilitation. Parameters in this study include mangrove type, substrate, salinity, tidal type, pH, current velocity, and biota objects. Based on observations, there were 10 types of mangroves found. The results of observations that have been calculated using the mangrove rehabilitation land suitability matrix show that each station can be said to be suitable for the rehabilitation area with the distribution of the suitability value of mangrove rehabilitation land showing a dominant suitability of S1 (Highly Appropriate).

Abstract

Molluscs, especially bivalves and gastropods, make an important contribution to the formation of food chains in seagrass ecosystems. In addition, bivalves and gastropods are often used as biological indicators of aquatic environmental quality in seagrass ecosystems. The close relationship between seagrass beds, bivalves and gastropods can be seen in the expanse of seagrass ecosystems found on Buntal Island which is located in Kotania Bay, West Seram Regency. The potential of bivalves and gastropods, such as the diversity and community structure found in Buntal Island waters, is very important to study because the information is limited. This study aims to determine the diversity of bivalves and gastropods in the seagrass ecosystem of Buntal Island and to determine the community structure of bivalves and gastropods which include; density and relative density, abundance and relative abundance, and frequency of presence and relative frequency of presence. The research method used is quantitative. The results of the analysis of the potential of molluscs showed that the diversity of the composition of mollusc taxa found in seagrass ecosystems on Buntal Island was divided into 2 classes, 25 families, 37 genera, 52 species with a total of 3291 individuals. The mollusc with the highest score in terms of density, abundance, and frequency of presence belonged to Nassarius globossus.

Abstract

Mangrove have a role in the absorption and storage of carbon from the atmosphere, which is stored in the form of biomass and sediment, so that mangroves have enormous potential in mitigation global climate change because they can reduce greenhouse gas emission is carbon. Mangrove store carbon in carbon pools including above ground biomass, below ground biomass, litter or dead wood, and soil. The purpose of this study was to calculate the value of carbon stock and carbon sequestration in mangroves in Pengudang Villages, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency. This research was conducted in September – October 2022, the research method used purposive sampling non-destructive method with allometric model and sediment sampling was carried out at 30 cm intervals until the discovery of humus soil. The result of biomass calculations were then converted into carbon stock values and mangrove carbon sequestration. Data analysis was carried out by calculating biomass, carbon stock value and carbon sequestration in mangroves in Pengudang Villages, Teluk Sebong District, Bintan Regency. The result showed the total biomass value was 498,77 tons/ha, the carbon stock value was 1203,27 tonsC/ha, while the carbon sequestration value was 4412,05 tonsC/ha.
