Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia has high exposure to sunlight which can cause skin problems such as hyperpigmentation. Treatment of hyperpigmentation with hydroquinone can cause side effects. Therefore, it is necessary to develop antihyperpigmentation products from natural ingredients to minimize these side effects. Berenuk leaves (Crescentia cujete Linn) have antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 80.21 µg/ml in ethanol extract. This antioxidant compound can be used to treat hyperpigmentation problems. In its use, Berenuk Leaf Ethanol Extract (BLEE) is formulated in a cream dosage form. Cremophor RH40 is a type of nonionic surfactant that can affect the physical stability of cream. This study aims to determine the effect of Cremophor RH40 on the physical stability of cream preparations and their antihyperpigmentation activity. Cream preparations were made with varying concentrations of Cremophor RH40 5% (F1), 10% (F2), 15% (F3). Physical stability evaluation was tested using the cycling test method. Data were analyzed statistically with paired samples t-test. Analysis of antihyperpigmentation test data in the form of the amount of melanin in all test groups was analyzed for differences using Kruskal Wallis and continued with the Mann-Whitney test. BLEE cream’s physical stability test result show that the most stable formula is formula 1 because it is stable up to the 5th cycle. in contrast, formula 2 only goes up to the 3rd cycle, and formula 3 in the first cycle has experienced 2-phase separation. BLEE cream (F1) has antihyperpigmentation activity because it has an average melanin intensity less than the negative and positive controls.

Abstract

Unsaturated fatty acids in avocado oil can help reduce erythema brought on by prolonged UV-B exposure. The effectivity of sunscreen absorption into the skin will be enhanced by the use of isopropyl myristate (IPM) in nanoemulsion. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical characteristics and sunscreen effectiveness of avocado oil nanoemulsion (AVN) modified with IPM. 1% (FI), 3% (FII), and 5% (FIII) IPM variation were used to make AVN with 5% oil. The AVN were tested for physical characteristics such as organoleptic, pH, viscosity, rheology, particle size and polydispersity index (PI). The products were also tested for sunscreen effectivity by in vitro and Minimum Erythemal Dose (MED) method. The data obtained were analyzed statistically. The results showed that the AVN was pale yellow and clear with transmittance percentage were 96%. The rheogram showed that the products were newtonian. The pH values range were from 6.62 to 6.66; viscosity 1.65-1.84 dPa.s; particle size < 17 nm, zeta potential was in range of -30,54±1,72 to -37,85±3,11 and PI < 0.5 for all formula. In vitro SPF values were 16.43 ± 4.50 (FI), 16.27 ± 4.20 (FII) and 17.88 ± 3.20 (FIII) (p >0.05), and categorized as ultra protection. MED value were 12.28 ± 1.34 (FI); 12.51 ± 1.68 (FII); and 13.22 ± 1.84 (FIII) (p< 0.05) and categorized as maximum protection. Isopropyl myristate increased the sunscreen product's MED value without changing its physical characteristics.

Abstract

Sumatra and Borneo are areas consisting of rainforests with a high vulnerability to fire. Both areas are in the tropics which experience rainy and dry seasons annually. The long dry season such as in 2019 triggered forest and land fires in Borneo and Sumatra, causing haze disasters in the exposed areas. This indicates that climate variables play a role in burning forests and land in Borneo and Sumatra, but how climate affects the fires in both areas is still questionable. This study investigates the climate variables: temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind speed in relation to the fire’s characteristics in Borneo and Sumatra. We use the Random Forest model to determine the characteristics of forest fires in Sumatra and Borneo based on the climate variables and carbon emission levels. According to the model, the fire event in Sumatra is slightly better predicted than in Borneo, indicating a climate-fire dependence is more prominent in Sumatra. Nevertheless, a maximum temperature variable is seemingly an important indicator for forest and land fire in both domains as it gives the largest contribution to the carbon emission.

Abstract

This research paper focuses on predicting the dispersion of carbon emissions, a crucial indicator for identifying potential forest fire hotspots in the wooded regions of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Forest fires, often triggered by extended periods of dry weather, result in significant environmental degradation, impacting both the ecosystem and the economy. Furthermore, health concerns arise from smoke inhalation, leading to respiratory problems. To achieve this predictive capability, we harnessed valuable datasets, including GFED4.1s for carbon emissions and ERA5 for historical climate indicators, spanning from 1998 to 2022. Employing supervised learning ensemble methods, specifically Random Forest Regression (RFR) and Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR), we sought to forecast carbon emissions. It is noteworthy that our predictions encompassed carbon emission values from 1998 to 2023, providing insights into recent trends. Our analysis showed that GBR did better than RFR in terms of evaluation metrics, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 10.87 and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.91. This was done by carefully tuning the hyperparameters. Additionally, our study highlighted that precipitation, temperature, and humidity were the primary climate factors influencing carbon emission values.

Abstract

Red spinach (Amaranthus cruentus), a rich source of antioxidant anthocyanins, is susceptible to light degradation. Foam mat drying (FMD) is a promising technique to preserve these pigments. This study compared the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of gels incorporating FMD and ethanolic extracts of A. cruentus (EEAC). Both were incorporated into gels at varying concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5%). FMD gels exhibited a darker red color and significantly higher total anthocyanin content (8.33 ± 0.25/100 g) and stronger antioxidant activity (IC50 of 35.67 ± 1.87 ppm) compared to EEAC gels (10.45 ± 0.15/100 g and IC50 of 47.88 ± 2.45 ppm, respectively). Both gel types had similar pH values (5.32-5.77). Increasing the concentration of either extract affected the viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion of the gels. Importantly, FMD gels displayed significantly higher antioxidant activity (58.75 ± 2.12 to 64.72 ± 2.01%) than EEAC gels (31.75 ± 2.13 to 50.12 ± 3.01%) across all formulations. These findings suggest that FMD-based gels offer a superior delivery system for A. cruentus antioxidants, potentially leading to innovative food products with enhanced nutritional value and health benefits.

Abstract

This paper studies the simulation of Cyclone Nicholas that occurred close to the coastal area of Western Australia and fell on the mainland of Southwestern Australia. The simulation was conducted via a dynamical downscaling model, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), to obtain a higher resolution with reference to the regional climate data. The model simulation is generated using a global reanalysis of climate data for the initial and lateral boundary conditions. We investigated the response of the tropical storm to the model regarding the track and intensity using a modified Kyklop method that appears more appropriate for a landfall cyclone. Our study suggests that the regional climate data computed by the model deviates from the storm track of the global climate data forcing field. In this study, the track of the simulated storm is parallel to the satellite data, but it is shifted slightly to the east, closer to the mainland. Nevertheless, the model simulation can implement the intensity of the storm as strongly as the observation, while the forcing data delivers substantial underestimation.
