Abstract

The nutmeg seed oil has antioxidant and sunscreen activity, but it is unstable in storage. The stability of nutmeg seed oil can be improved by developing the oil into an emulgel with carbopol 940. This study determined the stability of nutmeg seed oil emulgel (NSE) with carbopol 940 as a gel base. NSE contains of 10% nutmeg oil and variation of carbopol 940 were 0.60% (FI), 0.80% (FII), and 1.0% (FIII). NSE was tested for SPF value every week and physical stability, including organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesion, dispersibility, viscosity, and pH before and after 30 days of storage. NSE was stored at the climatic chamber at 30±2°C with RH 65±5%. Quantitative data from physical stability were analyzed by t-test dependent while SPF value and antioxidant were analyzed by univariate test. All the physical parameters showed no significant changes (p > 0.05). Emulgel was white thick, with a nutmeg seed oil odor. pH was in a safe range for skin (6.12-6.90). NSE had pseudo-plastic rheology, and it changed into pseudoplastic-thixotropic after 30 days of storage. The SPF value of NSE was above eight, and it did not show significant change after the storage from each week (p > 0.05). Nutmeg seed oil emulgel with carbopol 940 showed stable physical appearance and SPF value.

Abstract

Sea buckthorn oil (SBO) contains fatty acids that have an anti-aging effect. The delivery system ofSBO can be improved by a nanoemulsion system. The purpose of this study was to determine thephysical stability of SBO nanoemulsion (NSB) with Tween 80 variation. NSB was made with 1% SBOand Tween 80 variation of 35% (FI); 40% (FII) and 45% (FIII). NSB was stored in a climatic chamberat 30 ± 2°C and RH of 65%±5% for 90 days. Samples were taken before storage on the 15th, 30th,60th, and 90th days. Evaluations were carried out including appearance, particle size, polydispersityindex (PI), transmittance percentage (TP), pH, and viscosity. Quantitative data were analyzed withmultivariate analysis. The result showed that NSB formulas were yellowish-orange and clear. Thedroplet size in FII and FIII was stable (p > 0.05) with a range of 12-15 nm with PI < 0,5. All formulashad TP > 95% with a pH of 7.50–7.6. The viscosity of all formulas was 1.2-1.9 dPa.s and characterizedas Newtonian. Increasing the concentration of tween 80 can reduce droplet size and PI. Tween 80 at aconcentration of 35-45% produces sea buckthorn nanoemulsion which is stable for 90 days of storage.

Abstract

Abstract

The island of Borneo has faced seasonal forest fires for decades. This phenomenon is worsening during dry seasons, especially when droughts are concurrent with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. Climate is therefore one of the drivers of the fire phenomenon. This paper studies the relationship between climate variables, namely temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and wind speed, and the occurrence of forest fire using two clustering methods, K-means and Fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering methods. Borneo is clustered into four areas based on burned area data obtained from Global Fire Emission Data (GFED). It is also clustered according to the combinations of climate variables. Both methods reach the highest correlation between the climate variable and the burned area clusters in September. The K-means method gives a correlation of -0.54 while the FCM gives -0.55. In August until October, relative humidity provides the dominant correlation affecting burned area, even though an additional precipitation or wind variable slightly increases the correlation in the FCM method. In November, temperature largely contributed to the burned area by a positive correlation of 0.31 in K-means and 0.33 in FCM. The evaluation performance of the methods is conducted by an internal validation called the Silhouette index. Both methods have positive index values ranging from 0.39 to 0.69 and the maximum value is influenced by the wind cluster. This indicates that the clustering methods applied in this paper can identify one or a combination of climate variables into dense and well-separated clusters.
