Abstract

Slime molds, Myxomycetes, or Mycetozoa are Protozoan that produces fruiting body similar to micro-fungi. The fruiting bodies mostly are tiny goblets, globes, plumes, or other shapes that are difficult to characterize. In IPB University, many myxomycetes were found on the rotten wood. One of them is the Stemonitis specimen Bogor2020. The shape has an intricate form as a matchstick shape. The Stemonitis specimen Bogor2020 has a blackish stalk with 2-2.5 mm in height. The spore is finely globose with 6.7x6.7 µm in diameter, and with baculae ornamentation. The identification used morphological study using Numerical Taxonomy System (NTSys) software. Six species from Stemonitis (Stemonitis ferruginea, S. flavogenita, S. pallida, S. herbatica, S. splendens, and S. webberi) were used as Stemonitis references for SAHN cladogram. Ceratiomyxa arbuscula which is the same as the Myxomycetes group was chosen as an outgroup. The 30 biner data were used for the SAHN cladogram analysis. The SAHN cladogram shows that Stemonitis specimen Bogor2020 is classified as Stemonitis pallida. The main characters that strongly group them are spore surface, spore size, stalk color, and stalk size. Modern taxonomy in the Stemonitis genus is heavily reliant on morphological characters identification.

Abstract

Mycophagy is the process of the organism consuming fungi. Fungal  tissue considered  as  valuable  resource  with  high  nutritional content for organisms which have the metabolic abilities to digest it. To date, there is no previously published record of animal mycophagy in Indonesia. Field observations in IPB University Campus Forest has been done to monitor mycophagy activity by any animals in sampling site. Only 1 of the 4 observasion period showed the evidence of animal mycophagy in sampling site. Mycophagous gastropod found to consume Coprinellus disseminatus fruit body as diet source. Macrofungi fruit body was eaten within two to three minutes. The snail only consume the pileus part of fruit body of Coprinellus disseminatus. It showed to use it’s anterior tentacles to pick the stages of fruit body. The gastropod tend to prefer mature fruitbody, yet the the reasons are still not clear. This is the first report of animal mycophagy evidence in Indonesia.

Abstract

Ophiocordyceps is special type of entomopathogenic fungi which well known to infect insects and turning them into zombie. A total of 250 species have been described from its genus, and some are known to control their hosts, which are most notably ants. They are ubiquitous within tropical rain forests across the board, with few publication reports from temperate ecosystems. These fungal pathogens possess the capacity to manipulate host behaviour in order to increase their own fitness. These entomopathogenic fungi cause their hosts frezee to die in an exposed area on the abaxial surface of leaves or branches, which then enhancing the fungus spore production and dispersal. Despite the high diversity of fungi and insect with vast tropical forest as well as drugs potency from Ophiocordyceps, publication of Ophiocordyces was rarely reported from Indonesia. This review will explain the evolution of Ophiocordyceps-insect interaction, simbiont distribution, and zombie-insect formation mechanism, in order to induce zombie-insect research in Indonesia.

Abstract

Wild mushrooms are one of the food materials which often sought after by Indonesians when foraging on forests or around their residence. However, due to the similar morphology of edible and poisonous mushrooms, cases of mushroom poisoning are an inevitable risk. A young man consumed wild mushroom collected from his yard in Gresik, East Java. The macrofungi grew on humus soil with several plants around it. The man mistakenly recognized the mushroom as either Termitomyces or Agaricus which could be consumed. After an experienced friend also confirmed the edibility of the mushroom, he immediately cooked and consumed the mushrooms. A few hours later, the victim experienced vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and loss of balance. The victim immediately received coconut water by his family. After 4-5 hours of seven times vomiting, his condition began to improve and start the norma activities. The macrofungi which caused poisoning were then documented and described. The identification result using several macroscopic characters confirmed the mushroom as Clitocybe sp. This mushroom has previously been reported contain the muscarine toxin. This article is one of few publications on mushroom poisoning case which equipped with the complete information on mushroom features and descriptions in Indonesia. This report indicates that the caution and complete observations of the information are needed before consuming an unknown wild mushroom.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Wild mushrooms are one of the germplasm which have been consumed for decades. Besides the good nutritional content for health, some of wild mushrooms which identical to edible mushrooms are known to have toxins that can cause poisoning. To date, despite the high numbers of poisoning cases, information regarding cases of wild mushroom poisoning in Indonesia are not properly organized. This paper is a literature-based quantitative study by reviewing and validating all reports of mushroom poisoning in Indonesia during the 2010-2020 period. The results showed that over the last 10 years, there have been 76 cases of poisoning due to consumption of wild mushrooms in Indonesia. A total of 550 people became victims and 9 of them died. The wild mushroom genera suspected to be the cause of poisoning include: Amanita sp. (egg phase), Calvatia sp., Chlorophyllum cf. molybdites, Clitocybe sp., Coprinellus sp., Coprinopsis sp., Coprinus sp., Galerina sp., Inocybe sp., Lepiota sp., Macrocybe sp., Macrolepiota sp., Panaeolus sp., Parasola sp., Psilocybe sp., and Scleroderma sp. (old phase). The good collaboration between the government, researchers, citizens, and journalists in documenting the character of the mushroom that causes poisoning needs to be done to create a database of poisonous mushrooms in Indonesia. This is expected to be able to prevent the incidence of wild mushroom poisoning in Indonesia.

Abstract

Many mycologist believed that the successful history of plant invasion to the land was the result of co-evolutionary interaction between plant and fungi. The colonization of land by plants mainly depend on the fundamental biological evolution, among which was the symbiosis with fungi to enhance water and nutrient uptake. Untill today, most plants hold in symbioses with endophytic and mycorrhizal fungi in environment, and the consequences for plants vary broadly from mutualism to parasitism (plant fungal pathogen). Recently, scientist proved that some of those type of interactions poses dynamic situation which involving the agreement betwen host and its mycobion partner. Interestingly, the switching mechanism of the life style of the fungus from one state (mutualistic) to another( parasitic) and vice versa is potentially emerge. This review will highlight both the initial symbiosis process between plant and fungi, and how they maintain it.Keywords: Fungi, plant, symbiosis, maintenance

Abstract

Ascomycota is the largest Phylum in the Kingdom of Fungi. Most of the members of this group are microscopic, but fews are also produce macroscopic ascomata. Due to their large size and visible without the aid of a microscope, this group is often confused as Basidiomycota. This paper is a literature-based quantitative research. To date, 11 macroscopic Ascomycota from Indonesia have been reported, namely: Elaphomyces tropicalis sp. nov., Chlorociboria cf. aeruginosa, Podostroma cf. cornu-damae, Onygena sp., Morchella aff. deliciosa, Morchella sp., Scutellinia sp., Trichaleurina javanica, Cookeina speciosa, Cookeina tricholoma, Phillipsia sp., Daldinia spp., and Xylaria spp. The macrofungi are classified into 5 orders and 9 Families. Exploration and inventory efforts are need to be done more actively to increase the information on the diversity of masroscopic Ascomycota in Indonesia.
