Abstract

Immersing learners in English can be a strategy to improve their autonomy in in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. The objective of the present study is to analyze the improvement in factors related to learnersÔÇÖ autonomy after the English camp, one of types of language immersion programs. This study used a convenience sampling method. The participants consisted of thirty high school students. Therefore, the present study employed a quantitative research design by distributing a set of questionnaires before and after an-eight-day English camp program. The results suggest that the most salient factor that improves after the treatment is ÔÇÿimportant strategiesÔÇÖ┬á (m=3.6 to m=3.75) while factors related ÔÇÿthe learnersÔÇÖ sense of self-efficacyÔÇÖ (m=3.75 to m=3.91) and ÔÇÿthe role of teacherÔÇÖ (m=3.47 to m=3.5) do not suggest a drastic increase. In contrast, the items related to ÔÇÿthe role of the feedbackÔÇÖ (m=3.77 to m=3.58) show a decline. In this sense, the participants seem able to employ various important strategies to advance their language learning progress and improve their confidence while finding the roles of feedback they obtained during the program lessened. The results of this study imply the needs to provide comprehensible inputs to the students so that they can enhance their autonomy. The next study should involve the investigation of the effects of comprehensible inputs in an English camp toward learnersÔÇÖ autonomy.

Abstract

This study examines the media relations strategies employed by the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) to improve its institutional image. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation of media activities, and analysis of official documents to understand communication practices comprehensively. The findings reveal a structured and sequential media relations process comprising: (1) provision of clear and accurate information materials, (2) facilitation of verification mechanisms, (3) relational engagement with journalists, and (4) integration of the PESO media strategy (paid, earned, shared, and owned media). While empirical evidence on public compliance or brand perception is limited, informants perceive that these strategies enhance transparency, credibility, and accessibility of information, thereby supporting the improvement of DGT’s institutional image. The study proposes a conceptual model illustrating how information supply, verification, relational trust, and multi-channel communication interact to strengthen perceived institutional legitimacy and media relationships. These findings highlight the potential of strategic media relations in public institutions to address negative perceptions and reinforce organizational credibility.

Abstract

This study analyzes the politeness strategies employed by the main character, Ji-Yoon Kim, in the Netflix series The Chair using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, combining systematic frequency counting with contextual qualitative interpretation to examine how the character constructs social and professional relationships through language. Data were drawn from dialogue transcriptions across six episodes and analyzed through a structured content analysis procedure involving the identification, classification, and interpretation of politeness strategies. The findings reveal 78 instances of politeness strategies: 23 bald-on-record (29.49%), 30 positive politeness (38.46%), 21 negative politeness (26.92%), and 4 off-record (5.13%). Positive politeness emerges as the most dominant strategy, indicating Kim’s orientation toward solidarity-building and relational maintenance within academic and interpersonal contexts. The findings suggest that politeness functions not merely as etiquette but as a strategic communicative resource for negotiating leadership, authority, and identity in institutional settings. By examining politeness in a contemporary media narrative, this study contributes to pragmatic research on leadership discourse and identity performance in professional communication.

Abstract

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has been widely implemented to support motivation and language development in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction. However, empirical studies examining its use in English for Islamic Banking within Islamic higher education contexts remain limited. This study investigates the effectiveness of CALL in enhancing students’ motivation and language skills in an English for Islamic Banking course at an Islamic higher education institution. Employing a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test/post-test design, the study involved 20 undergraduate Islamic Banking students who participated in a CALL-based instructional intervention conducted over six sessions. Data were collected through language proficiency assessments based on an IELTS speaking rubric and a motivation questionnaire based on Keller’s ARCS model. The findings indicate a statistically significant improvement in language proficiency (t(19) = 2.42, p = 0.025, Cohen’s d = 0.53). In addition, Attention (d = 0.63), Confidence (t(19) = 2.29, p = 0.033, d = 0.52), and Satisfaction (d = 1.17) showed significant gains, with Satisfaction demonstrating the largest effect size. Meanwhile, the Relevance component showed no significant change (p = 0.33), possibly due to students’ prior perception of the course content as inherently applicable to their academic and professional goals. The study suggests that CALL can serve as an effective pedagogical approach for supporting learner motivation and language development in ESP courses within Islamic higher education, particularly when instructional activities are aligned with learners’ professional contexts in Islamic finance.
