Abstract

Background: YouTube’s impact on shaping voters’s preferences during Indonesian presidential candidates is undeniably significant. As the second-most-used platform, its presence has transformed the communication model into a participatory one. However, as in any democratic climate, are these preferences driven by rational considerations or purely emotional factors? Objective: We explored how user comments on YouTube contribute to the construction of presidential candidate representation. We focused on the main framework, digital discourses, and shift patterns of digital user engagement between July and August 2023. Methods: We used qualitative content analysis and encoded comments from 20 political videos related to Ganjar, Prabowo, and Anies into eleven thematic categories. These categories are then analyzed through frequency mapping, word visualization (wordcloud), and cluster analysis. Results: We found that attributes related to intelligence, leadership, and change were consistently emphasized by digital users. The candidates who are perceived to be cognitively capable and reform-oriented were preferred by digital users. Meanwhile, problems related to corruption and race (SARA) remain, although they have decreased. We found that emotionally charged framing discourses, which in previous periods had proven effective in mobilizing political support, are now showing a decline in appeal, particularly among active digital users who tend to judge leadership in a more rational manner. Conclusion: We argue that YouTube serves as a participatory political landscape where user comments actively reshape the representation of candidates. This clearly challenges traditional charismatic authority and shows a shift in public expectations towards a rational-legal leadership. Implications: Given the tendency for political legitimacy to be determined by media logic, the candidates’s representations must take into account the public’s interests. This situation underscores a change in expectations of political legitimacy. It should remind us that people discuss non-media issues through media: social, economic, and political.

Abstract

Shrimp aquaculture has rapidly expanded along Indonesia’s northern Java coast, raising concerns about its ecological implications, particularly in traditional shrimp farming. This rapid assessment evaluates the environmental and biodiversity impacts of traditional shrimp farming in Brebes, Central Java, focusing on current ecosystem conditions and future implications through scenario-based analysis. This study conducted a rapid ecological assessment to evaluate the environmental and biodiversity impacts of long-established traditional shrimp ponds. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, combining ecological field surveys, spatial analysis, interviews, and scenario-based comparisons of “with farm” and “no farm” conditions. The assessment recorded 54 plant species and 50 fauna species, including 10 nationally protected fauna and the Vulnerable smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata), which faces increasing conflict with farmers. Spatial analysis confirmed that shrimp ponds are located outside protected areas and critical habitats and were not constructed on converted mangrove or natural wetlands ecosystem. Scenario modelling comparing "with farm" and "no farm" conditions highlights trade-offs between aquaculture expansion and biodiversity maintenance. Although ponds can create new niches for certain bird species, they may limit habitat connectivity for mammals. Community-based mangrove planting and ecological buffers offer promising mitigation pathways. As a rapid ecological assessment, this study provides baseline insights that can inform more detailed, long-term ecological monitoring and management of aquaculture landscapes in Northern Coast of Java.

Abstract

Microbial contamination in food can pose a serious threat, as it not only reduces food quality but also directly impacts health, ranging from mild to severe conditions, and can affect people of all ages. Adolescents are vulnerable to food poisoning due to limited knowledge and skills in safe food handling. This community service activity involved partners from SMAN 6 Depok and aimed to address the main problems faced by teenagers, such as limited knowledge about the types of microorganisms that can cause contamination in food. Educating adolescents is crucial, considering that the highest cases of food poisoning occur in this age group, yet education efforts are still rare because most health programs focus on groups directly involved in food processing. The methods used include interactive educational approaches, such as presentations, discussions, and Q&A sessions, as well as laboratory practices to observe microorganisms with the aid of a microscope. The activity also involved administering questionnaires in the form of pre-tests and post-tests to the adolescents. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in knowledge about the types of microorganisms that cause food contamination, from 40% to 96%. This educational program has strong sustainability potential with long-term impacts in the form of increased adolescents’ knowledge and a reduced risk of foodborne diseases.

Abstract

Background: Fungal infections such as candidiasis caused by Candida albicans and pityriasis versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur are highly prevalent in Indonesia. Conventional antifungal treatments often face challenges like resistance and adverse side effects. As an alternative, brotowali stem (Tinospora crispa) extract, rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins, shows promise as an antifungal agent. This research investigates the in vitro antifungal efficacy of ethanol extract from brotowali stem against C. albicans and M. furfur. Methods: A laboratory experimental design utilizing the well-diffusion method was applied, measuring inhibition zone diameters on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar after 2x24 hours at extract concentrations of 45%, 60%, 75%, and 90%. Results: The ethanol extract of brotowali stem exhibited statistically significant but relatively low antifungal activity based on inhibition zone diameters against C. albicans (0,002) and M. furfur (0,001), with higher concentrations showing greater antifungal. The largest inhibition zones measured 5.93 mm for C. albicans and 3.97 mm for M. furfur. Conclusions: The extract concentrations of 90% concentration exhibited moderate antifungal activity against C. albicans. For M. furfur, all concentrations demonstrated weak antifungal activity.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, good immunity was needed to avoid the corona virus infection. One of the efforts to prevent corona virus infection was to increase the body's immune status. High body immunity can be obtained from eating healthy foods, getting adequate rest and avoiding stress / mental stress. One local wisdom of the people in Indonesia to increasing immunity level was the habit of consuming herbal drinks which were believed to increase immunity level because there were several very useful ingredients. One of the herbal drinks made from ginger and lemon was JASULE (Jahe Susu Lemon), which was a ginger milk drink with lemon added. In this training, the participants were given material about the importance of the herbal drink JASULE (Jahe Susu Lemon). The importance of growing ginger and lemon as a medicinal plant in the yard. Also given training in making JASULE drink until all participants can make it themselves. The training activities for making herbal drinks JASULE to increase body immunity level during the Covid-19 Pandemic were held in Pangkalan Jati Cinere, Depok. This activity was well received by all participants with enthusiasm and the questions asked. Participants gained additional knowledge and skills in making herbal drinks JASULE, which can be seen from the increasing in post test scores after counseling and training in making herbal drink JASULE to increasing body immunity level during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Pangkalan Jati Cinere, Depok was 42.4% ie from 47.9% to 90.3%.
