Abstract

Emotional distress, such as symptoms of anxiety, depression, and withdrawal, is on the rise among teenagers today. These symptoms are generally grouped into internalizing problems. Based on research, a risk factor that contributes to internalizing problems is peer rejection. This study aims to determine the effect of peer rejection on adolescent internalizing problems. Research design is quantitative research with a multistage random sampling technique as a data collection technique. The subjects of this study were 252 adolescents aged 16-18 years who are currently studying in SMA in Bondowoso Regency, consisting of 103 boys (M = 40.068; SD = 13.283) and 149 girls (M = 40.893; SD =13.283). The instruments used were Social Peer Rejection Measure (21 items, α = .90) and Strengths and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ), just for internalizing problems (10 items, α = .72). The results of the analysis test using simple linear regression showed that there was a positive influence of peer rejection on internalizing problems in high school adolescents in Bondowoso Regency, adjusted R 2 = .278; F(4, 427) = 251, p = .000). This influence shows that the more often adolescents experience rejection from their peers, the higher the chances of experiencing internalizing problems.

Abstract

Social anxiety phenomena can occur easily because each individual has a tendency to experience social anxieties with their individual's different levels of anguish. An adverse childhood experience (ACE) is a negative experience that a person experiences during childhood, such as physical violence, sexual violence, neglect, or emotional instability in the family. Some literature shows that person with more ACE experience tend to have a higher level of social anxiety compared to those who do not experience ACE. The aim of this survey is to find out the impact between adverse childhood experience and social anxiety in adolescents. This research used quantitative approach with a correlational design. The subjects were determined using random sampling techniques with samples of 282 students. As for the ACE variable, the World Health Organization Adverse Childhood Questionnaire (WHO ACE-IQ) scale and the social anxiety variable using the SAS-A scale (Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents). The analysis of the research data uses simple linear regression analysis. The results of this study show that there is no correlation between adverse childhood experience and social anxiety. Adverse childhood experience does not have significant influence with social anxiety in adolescents.

Abstract

Adolescence is when individuals face various developmental tasks that require them to do extensive exploration. Drastic changes and exploration processes during this period can cause internalizing and externalizing problems commonly found in adolescents, particularly when they lack support from the surrounding environment, especially from their parents and family. Family communication patterns are one of the important factors that can help adolescents navigate various developmental tasks while exploring optimally. This study measures the effects of the differences in consensual, pluralistic, protective, and laissez-faire family communication patterns on adolescents' internalizing and externalizing problems. Using a simple random sampling method, this comparative quantitative study involved 408 Muhammadiyah Junior High School students in East Java. The instruments used are the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and The Revised Family Communication Pattern Instrument (FCP-R). The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that family communication patterns have significant differences in internalizing problems, namely consensual laissez-faire (0.000) and pluralistic-laissez-faire (0.000). Likewise, in externalizing problems, family communication patterns revealed notable differences, namely in consensual-laissez-faire patterns (0.000). Of the various family communication patterns, only consensual laissez-faire and pluralistic laissez-faire can predict internalizing and externalizing problems. They must be tested further to ascertain the extent of their effects.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Kesehatan Mental, Korban Kekerasan, Trauma, Psikososial  ABSTRACT Physical, psychological, and sexual violence are still of particular concern in Indonesia. Cases of violence can occur at all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. These cases of violence can traumatize and even depress victims, which can have an impact on the continuation of the victim's life. Based on this description, it is necessary to provide mental health assistance for child victims of violence. The methods used are survivor screening using the Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) filled out by the victim's parents, providing assistance materials, and evaluation.  The service team conducted a dialog with victims of violence so that victims could open up. The results of this service show that the majority of children have difficulties in the components of emotional symptoms, behavior, and hyperactivity. However, most children still show the ability to behave prosocially, which may indicate a protective factor or adaptability in dealing with trauma. This service emphasizes the importance of appropriate and immediate intervention for children who are survivors of violence to overcome the psychological and behavioral disorders they may experience. At the evaluation stage after the provision of mentoring materials, it was seen that children who were victims of violence had enthusiasm and motivation that could support them to be able to return to normal life in their environment. Keywords: Mental Health, Victims Of Violence, Trauma, Psychosocial

Abstract

Peer environment is a protective factor and risk factor for various possible adolescent behavioural problems. This study aimed to identify the role of peer pressure on the emergence of adolescent disruptive behaviour. The research method used is quantitative non-experimentation. A total of 279 participants were subjected to research using multistage random sampling. The study subjects were spread across seven Public and Private High Schools in Jember Regency with details of 203 female students and 76 male students aged 15-17 years. The research instrument used is the NPPI (Negative Peer Pressure Inventory) scale to uncover the role of peer pressure and the SDQ (Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire) to uncover disruptive behavior. The data was then analyzed using simple linear regression techniques and multiple linear. The results showed a positive role in peer pressure on adolescent disruptive behavior (β= 0.221, p<0.05). The two most significant aspects of peer pressure roles that play a role in disruptive behavior are involvement with family (β= 0.198, p< 0.05) and misconduct or deviance (β =0.192, p<0.05). It is thus understood that the higher the role of peer pressure can lead to a greater chance of adolescents bringing up disruptive behaviour.

Abstract

Many changes occur during adolescence, including physical, cognitive, and psychological. They must be addressed appropriately to prevent internalizing problems at this developmental stage. Problem-solving is one of the personal skills that eases the adaptation to drastic developmental changes. Additionally, gender has been found to affect internalizing problems. This study aimed to measure the gender differences in internalizing problems and simultaneously examine the role of problem-solving skills and gender in internalizing problems. Based on simple random sampling, 669 students from eight Muhammadiyah high schools in East Java participated in this study. Data were collected using the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and demographic questions. The independent sample t-test results indicated significant gender differences in internalizing problems (t = -5.73, p < .001), in which female adolescents on average scored higher than their male counterparts. The multiple linear regression showed that problem-solving and gender simultaneously contribute to internalizing problems and account for 14% of the variance in internalizing problems. Incorporating the development of gender-based problem-solving skills among adolescents is likely to help prevent internalizing problems.
