Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived family social support and internalizing problems among adolescents through a correlational, quantitative study. A total of 689 adolescents in Muhammadiyah senior high school, aged between 15 and 18 years, who resided with their family and/or parents in the East Java Province (Indonesia) were recruited through a simple random sampling. The study used the Perceived Social Support-Family (PSS-Fa) scale and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Linear regression indicated a significant relationship between perceived family social support towards adolescent internalizing problems. This finding confirms the notable role of parents in preventing internalizing problems in adolescence.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period toward adulthood, during which individuals are vulnerable to emotional issues, peer problems, and behavioral challenges associated with internalizing and externalizing problems. One of the risk and protective factors in this phase is how adolescents perceive their relationship with both parents, whether in a positive or negative light. This study aims to examine the role of perceived parent–child relationships in internalizing and externalizing problems. A quantitative research design was employed, with a sample of 144 adolescents aged 11–17 years, selected through accidental sampling. The results of a simple regression analysis showed that adolescents' perception of their relationship with their mother significantly influenced both internalizing and externalizing problems. However, the perception of the relationship with the father did not show a significant influence on either type of problem. The findings suggest that the maternal figure plays a crucial role in strengthening emotional bonds through appreciation, support, and protection, enabling adolescents to feel secure and motivated to show filial devotion. As children mature, they tend to reciprocate the affection they have received. Moreover, a mother’s protection can ease the burden on adolescents in assuming parental roles. A mother’s happiness is also essential, as it directly impacts the well-being of the child.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transition phase from childhood to adulthood characterized by many drastic changes that make them vulnerable to internalizing and externalizing problems. However, parents can guide in managing the crisis by establishing warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between parent-adolescent interactions on the likelihood of experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. This quantitative correlational study involved 180 participants from six Junior High Schools in East Java, selected through simple random sampling. Two instruments used were the Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire-Revised Child Version (PACHIQ-R CH) and the Strenght and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Simple linear regression analysis indicated a significant effect of parent-adolescent interaction on internalizing and externalizing problems. It is suggested that parent-adolescent interactions contribute to the likelihood of adolescents experiencing internalizing and externalizing problems. Building warm, meaningful, and open interactions with adolescents assume to assist them in understanding the adaptive way of expressing emotions and overcoming the drastic changes during the transitional period.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood to adulthood. The global adolescent population currently exceeds 1.2 billion, making up 16% of the world’s population. Adverse childhood experiences in adolescents contribute significantly to mental health issues and also have an impact on adult lives. These experiences can be influenced by various factors including demographic background. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the differences in adverse childhood experiences with demographic background in adolescents in Indonesia. A comparative quantitative method with subjects aged 12-21 was adopted in this study. Furthermore, the instrument used was the World Health Organization Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (WHO ACE-IQ) which was further analyzed using the Jamovi 2.3.21 program. The results showed that 65.3% of the subjects experienced multiple adversities dominated by adolescent girls. Additionally, the dimension of adverse childhood experiences was the highest in emotional neglect. Other results showed that there was a significant role of demographic background including age with the highest prevalence in late adolescence (18-21 years) and parental marital status with the largest group of divorce in adverse childhood experiences. Future studies were further expected to examine and conduct publications with an equal number of subjects in each province throughout Indonesia to calculate prevalence more accurately and explore the relationship betweendemographic background and adverse childhood experiences. In this context, the study provided implications for adolescents to possess an overview of adverse childhood experiences.

Abstract

People experience more rapid physical, social, and emotional development in adolescence than in any other developmental stage. The dramatic changes may cause them volatile mental conditions and difficulties in overcoming various behavioral problems summarised as internalizing (IP) and externalizing problems (EP). One of the protective factors is emotional intelligence (EI) because someone with good emotional intelligence can control emotions when angry and adapt to unpleasant situations. This study aimed to determine the role of EI on IP and EP in Indonesian adolescents. This study used a quantitative research design with a simple random sampling technique. The research subjects were adolescents aged 15 to 18 years (N = 300) who attended nine high schools in East Java, consisting of 96 males and 204 females. The research instruments used were the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS) and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The results showed a significant negative role between emotional intelligence and internalizing problems (R2 =.391; F(1,298) = 191.649; p <.001) and externalizing problems (R2 =.281; F(1.298) = 116.230; p <.001). The higher one's ability to understand, regulate, and use emotions, the lower the manifestation of internal and external problematic behavior. It means that EI is confirmed to predict the IP and EP. The way to advance the capacity of adolescents' emotional intelligence is to try to express emotions and regulate and utilize their feelings. So adolescents do not develop mental health problems.

Abstract

Jabiri's philosophical thought has had a very broad influence both at the global and national levels. The concept of reason is formed and active and the episteme trilogy allows a critical reading of Islamic law. It helps distinguish between the transcendent and absolute normative values of Islam and the contextual historical and methodological side of Islam. Using Jabiri's thinking, this study will formulate a critique of the Islamization of Psychology movement that has been developing for a long time. The problem is that the Islamization of psychology works by consolidating the bayani episteme and making the bayani psychology dominant. This creates a theoretical dead end in Islamic psychology because it is bound by the text and context of the holy book, thereby ignoring the dynamics of modern science. It is also shown that other Islamic epistemes can give different forms to the Islamization of Science with the development that has been carried out by several Muslim scholars on a limited basis as an example. The implication is that Islamic psychology must present an alternative epistemological structure that overcomes old limitations before being followed by an Islamic psychology that is able to provide benefits throughout the ages.
