Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students in translating cooking recipes. It was conducted on sixth-semester students from class B in the translation course. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with thematic analysis to identify and interpret key patterns within the data. Data collection was carried out through a triangulation approach, combining mixed-method questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed four main themes and one additional theme related to the students’ difficulties: (1) vocabulary-related challenges, (2) grammar and equivalence issues, (3) translation quality and self-confidence, (4) limited exposure and cultural context, and (5) translation methods and procedures as an additional theme. These challenges reflect the complexity of translating procedural texts, especially recipes, which often include culturally bound terms, specific measurements, and imperative instructions. The study concludes that translating recipes presents significant linguistic and contextual challenges for EFL students. It suggests the need for more targeted strategies and exposure to authentic materials in translation to help students improve their translation and overcome practical difficulties in translating specialized texts like recipes.

Abstract

The application of the principles of Nature and the Nature of the Times is based on Ki Hadjar Dewantara's philosophy. This research aims to analyze the implementation of these two principles in the current education system, particularly in creating a balance between developing 21st-century skills and maintaining students' fundamental values. The research method used is a literature study examining Ki Hadjar Dewantara's works, relevant scientific journals, and national education policy documents such as the Freedom Curriculum. Research results show that although the principles of Nature and the Nature of the Times serve as philosophical foundations in education policy, their implementation still faces concrete challenges such as an evaluation system that is too cognitively oriented and teachers' limited competence in implementing student-centered learning. There is a need for curriculum development that provides autonomy to educational units, prioritizes project-based learning, and meaningfully integrates technology. Education based on the principles of natural disposition and zeitgeist is expected to produce students who are intelligent, have strong character, and are ready to face future challenges.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, including in Indonesia. In addition to physical impacts, stroke can also cause psychological disorders, such as anxiety, which can affect the patient's recovery process. The patient's level of knowledge about stroke plays an important role in managing this disease. Demographic factors, such as age, gender, education level, and socioeconomic status, can affect the level of knowledge and anxiety of patients about stroke. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between demographic characteristics and the level of knowledge and anxiety in stroke patients at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan. Methods: This study used a descriptive analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 135 stroke patients selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire that measured demographic characteristics, level of knowledge about stroke, and patient anxiety levels. Data analysis was carried out using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between variables. The results showed that 18 people (13.3%) aged <39 years had knowledge in the good category (3.7%), sufficient category (3.7%), and poor category (5.9%). Of the (45.5%) aged 40-59 years had knowledge in the good category (11.1%), sufficient category 37 people (27.4%) had knowledge in the poor category 6.7%). Of the (41.5%) aged 60-79 years had knowledge in the good category (5.9%), sufficient category (12.6%), and poor category (23.0%). there was a significant relationship between demographic characteristics and the level of knowledge and anxiety of stroke patients (p <0.05). Conclusion: Demographic characteristics have an influence on the level of knowledge and anxiety of stroke patients. It is recommended to explore other factors that may influence anxiety in stroke patients and assess the effectiveness of educational programs in improving patient understanding of this disease.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the structure and function of noun phrases (NPs) in English essays written by undergraduate EFL students at Universitas Palangka Raya. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, it analyzed 78 essays to identify and classify types and frequencies of noun phrase modifiers based on Biber et al.’s (2021) syntactic framework. The findings revealed that students predominantly used premodified noun phrases (85%), with determiners and adjectives as the most frequent modifiers, while postmodified noun phrases (15%) were less common and mostly realized through prepositional phrases. More complex postmodifiers, such as adjectives, participle clauses, infinitive clauses, adverbs, and appositives appeared infrequently, indicating limited syntactic variety. The dominance of simpler noun phrase structures suggests that students demonstrate intermediate syntactic competence, emphasizing clarity and economy in expression. These tendencies are attributed to pedagogical focus on basic grammar and first-language influence, particularly from Bahasa Indonesia. The study recommends enhancing grammar instruction by integrating activities that promote the use of complex noun phrase constructions in academic writing.
