Abstract

The global demand for nickel has continued to rise, in line with the growth of the stainless steel industry and renewable energy technologies. Indonesia, as one of the countries with the largest reserves of laterite nickel ore in the world, faces challenges in processing limonite ore, which typically contains high levels of iron and lower concentrations of nickel. This study aims to improve the efficiency of nickel extraction through a hydrometallurgical approach, using sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) leaching, selective iron precipitation with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and nickel determination using the gravimetric method. The leaching process was conducted at 90°C, varying the leaching time and acid concentration, followed by iron precipitation through pH adjustment and the addition of hydrogen peroxide to oxidize Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺, which subsequently forms Fe(OH)₃. The resulting iron-free filtrate was then reacted with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) to form a pink precipitate of the nickel complex [Ni(DMG)₂], which was then analyzed gravimetrically. The results showed that increasing leaching time and solvent concentration significantly enhanced the nickel extraction percentage. This approach proved to be effective in improving the selectivity and efficiency of nickel separation from impurities, thereby supporting a cleaner and more sustainable nickel production process.

Abstract

Used lubricating oil contains contaminants that can pollute the environment if not managed properly. One of the contaminants contained in it is heavy metals. Adsorption using adsorbent materials such as bentonite has become one of the commonly used methods for removing contaminants in used lubricating oil. Bentonite is a clay that is good for use as an adsorbent for heavy metals because it has large enough particles that are good for absorbing them. However, the effectiveness of bentonite adsorption can be influenced by the mass of bentonite used in the process. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the influence of bentonite mass on reducing Pb metal in lubricating oil using HCl-activated bentonite. The research results show that increasing the mass addition of bentonite can increase the effectiveness of adsorption and the removal efficiency of Pb metal in used lubricating oil. This is characterized by a decrease in Pb metal content in used lubricating oil before and after the adsorption process, namely in sample A with the addition of 2 grams. The Pb metal content in used lubricating oil is 0.2471 ppm, 4 grams is 0.2000 ppm, 6 grams is 0.142 ppm, at 8 it was 0.0895 ppm, and at 10 grams it was 0.0316 ppm. In sample B, with the addition of 2 grams, the metal content of Pb in the used lubricating oil was 0.3000 ppm, 4 grams was 0.2474 ppm, 6 grams was 0.2053 ppm, 8 grams was 0.1474 ppm, and 10 grams was 0.0684 ppm.

Abstract

Reliable determination of carbon (C) and sulfur (S) in tapping ferronickel is critical for metallurgical quality control and compliance with industrial specifications. Given the complex metallic matrix of ferronickel, verification of analytical performance is essential before routine application. This study verifies the GB/T 20123 standard method for the simultaneous determination of carbon and sulfur in tapping ferronickel using a High Carbon Sulfur (HCS-801) combustion–infrared analyzer. Method performance was assessed using accuracy, precision (repeatability), linearity, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ), in accordance with internationally accepted validation principles. Evaluation of recovery testing yielded 97.82 % for carbon and 99.04 % for sulfur, both within acceptable recovery ranges. Precision expressed as %RSD was 1.27% for carbon and 0.70% for sulfur, complying with the Horwitz criterion (% RSD < ½ CV Horwitz) and the general acceptance limit of 2 %. Excellent linearity was obtained across the calibration range, with correlation coefficients (r) of 0.998 for carbon and 0.9984 for sulfur. LOD and LOQ values, calculated based on the standard deviation of response and slope of calibration curves, were 0.0557% and 0.1855% for carbon, and 0.0123 % and 0.0409 % for sulfur, respectively. The results demonstrate that the GB/T 20123 method, when implemented with the HCS-801 analyzer, provides reliable analytical performance for carbon and sulfur determination in tapped ferronickel and is suitable for routine industrial applications.
