Abstract

Open waste burning remains a common practice in Kenali Asam Bawah, Jambi City, with significant impacts on environmental quality and public health. This study aims to identify the practice, analyze its impacts, and formulate contextual adaptation and mitigation strategies. This qualitative descriptive research employed a case study approach through field observations, interviews with residents and community leaders, and document analysis. The findings reveal that waste burning is driven by inadequate waste collection services and limited awareness of its consequences. The waste includes organic and inorganic materials, producing harmful emissions such as PM2.5, dioxins, and heavy metals. These emissions contribute to respiratory problems, air and soil pollution, and potential disruption of local ecosystems. Recommended strategies include environmental education, strengthening of local institutions, development of waste management infrastructure, innovation in household waste processing, and reinforcement of anti-burning regulations. The study is expected to contribute to local emission reduction efforts and support sustainable waste management practices.

Abstract

Climate change is a global environmental issue that increasingly affects urban areas, including Jambi City. One relevant mitigation solution is the utilization of green open spaces (GOS) as natural carbon sinks. This study aims to examine the role of GOS in climate change mitigation in Jambi City, using the buffer zone of Pondok Meja Village as a case study. A descriptive qualitative method was employed through literature review and short interviews with local residents. The findings show that GOS coverage in Jambi City remains limited at approximately 14.7% of the total city area, thus insufficient to effectively absorb carbon emissions. Pondok Meja Village possesses significant ecological potential, with green areas capable of absorbing up to 142 tons of CO₂ annually if optimally managed. However, GOS management faces challenges such as land-use change, weak policy protection, and low public awareness. Strengthening strategies are needed through spatial planning integration, conservation incentives, and active community involvement. This study recommends a community-based climate change mitigation model that can be replicated in other urban buffer areas.

Abstract

Climate change, driven by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, demands the diversification of cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, including at the household level. Jambi City, which faces the challenges of fossil fuel dependence and high organic waste production, has great potential for the development of biogas as a renewable energy source. The study aimed to evaluate potential feedstocks, production capacity, digester efficiency, and the economic and environmental benefits of biogas use in households. The research method employed a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach, utilizing surveys, interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The study results indicate that domestic and commercial organic waste in Jambi City, with a volume of 333.6 tons per day, can be processed to obtain sufficient biogas to meet domestic cooking energy needs. A simple facility based on livestock manure or organic waste has proven to be technically and economically effective, with a positive benefit-cost ratio (B/C) and significant energy savings potential of 1.23, along with a payback period of 3.5 years. However, challenges such as high initial costs, lack of technical expertise, and fluctuations in raw materials remain significant obstacles. Replication strategies through community training, institutional support, and crowdfunding schemes are key to increasing the scalability and sustainability of biogas utilization in Jambi City.

Abstract

Tofu is a popular soy-based food. Tofu manufacturing produces wastewater that can pollute the environment, and waste discharged into rivers must meet wastewater quality standards. Wastewater treatment can increase factory operating costs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of reducing Tofu Factory X's wastewater parameters, namely BOD, COD, TSS, and pH. Research Methods 1) observation and data collection on water discharge for daily manufacturing operations, 2) calculation of equalization basin plan, anaerobic and aerobic biofilters, oxygen requirements and blowers, 3) raw water and wastewater quality testing from the design of the wastewater treatment plant of Tofu Factory X, and 4) calculation of the reduction efficiency of BOD, COD, TSS and pH and comparison with the Minister of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014. The research results obtained showed the reduction efficiency of BOD pollution by 30.75%, COD by 35%, TSS by 68.08% and pH by 4.55. The wastewater treatment in this study did not fully demonstrate the expected efficiency, as adjustments had to be made to the required air quantity, temperature, and residence time. Keywords: anaerobic and aerobic, biofilter, liquid waste, tofu factory, wastewater quality.

Abstract

Former solid waste disposal at Talang Gulo TPA Jambi City implements a waste management system using a controlled landfill. Leachate and rainwater absorb into the soil and accumulate to become polluted groundwater. Furthermore, the polluted water flows into the dug well water and can reduce the quality of the dug well water. The aim of this study is to determine the heavy metal pollution index of residents' dug well water and the influence of the distance between the ex-TPA and dug well water. This research method is purposive sampling based on the distance of heavy metal sample points, namely 70 m, 230 m and 300 m. Sample analysis used an Atomic Absorption Spectrophometer (AAS) in the laboratory. The results were classed and indexed (C/P), the groundwater was very lightly contaminated with Cd (<0.1), heavily contaminated with Fe (0.51-0.75), very lightly contaminated with Cr (<0.1), and moderately contaminated with Cu (0.26-0.50). Based on the R value of the four metals, it shows that there was a very high influence between the distance between the well water sample and the former solid waste disposal leachate product.

Abstract

Industrial and operational activities in various sectors, such as manufacturing, oil, gas, mining, and healthcare, have the potential to generate hazardous and toxic waste (B3) that can contaminate the environment, endanger human health, and threaten occupational safety. The management of B3 waste, which includes collection, storage, transportation, and final processing, carries a high risk of accidents and exposure to hazardous materials. These risks are generally due to workers' lack of knowledge of safe work procedures, improper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the failure to implement optimal occupational safety standards. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of Safe Work Practices (SWPs) using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRAC) approach at each stage of B3 waste management, from generation, packaging, and storage to transportation. The methods used included field observation, data collection from company documents, and risk analysis based on probability and severity matrices. The study results indicate that the implementation of SWPs has been generally effective, characterized by a predominantly low to moderate risk level. Therefore, the implementation of SWPs plays an important role in minimizing potential hazards in B3 waste management, but it is necessary to strengthen operational discipline and optimize supporting facilities to improve occupational safety performance.

Abstract

The palm oil industry has a significant impact on the regional and national economy, generating employment, especially for farmers. Crude palm oil (CPO) can be processed into edible oil, cosmetics, and biofuels, making it a strategic commodity in global trade. However, this industry also produces abundant solid and liquid waste, such as shells, fibers, and empty fruit bunches. Factory waste must be managed and processed to prevent environmental pollution. Poor waste management can lead to various environmental problems, necessitating effective and sustainable management strategies. This type of solid waste has the potential to be used as an alternative energy source and raw material for value-added products. The objective was to determine the utilization of palm oil solid waste and its percentage, as an effort to optimize industrial waste management. The methods used included direct observation of the processing and utilization of solid waste at the factory, collection of production data, and a review of relevant literature. The results showed that empty fruit bunches are used as compost and mulch in plantations, shells are used as boiler fuel to generate steam energy, and fiber is used as supplementary fuel. According to the literature review, this solid waste still has potential for further development, such as the production of briquettes, pellets, and biomass-based activated carbon. Optimizing the utilization of palm oil solid waste can increase the energy efficiency of factories and reduce the volume of waste.
